DataSource Controls :: Memory Utilization In Windows Service?
Jul 2, 2010
I have created a windows service which runs round the clock
In every cycle it communicates with SQL data base and updates around 5000 employees records. Memory utilization is more.
My System configuration is about 3GHz CPU and 2GB Ram.
If I leave the machine for one full night memory utilization goes above 1GB. Service will be running but no work is done in the database.

I have a memory leak somewhere that I cant find. Every few days my server will crash, and just before that I log a ton of SQL errors stating that it is "out of memory".
I cant find it anywhere, all of my connections are being disposed like so:
[Code]....
Then I call the connection from my pages like so:[Code]....
That is all pretty straight forward. The connection is disposed because it is implementing the USING clause. I am opening the connection in my connection manager class, and not where it is being utilized?Or, could the problem be in the below method I am using to populate a SqlDataReader:[Code]....
Now, at first it appears as though this could be the problem because the Connection isn't part of a USING clause, however doesn't the 'Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection' pretty much do the same thing. This makes sure that the connection is closed when the reader is closed, right? Here is how I call that above reader from my login page code behind:[Code]....
So the DataReader will get closed even without the .Close() because it is in the USING, and the connection should get closed because I specified it in the ExecuteReader paramters right?

make a query which will give me 200,000 results and bind it to the datatable but the error will pop out saying out of memory or request timed out.Can datatable/dataset handle these records or is my current server's hardware needs a little upgrade?Actually we are gettings millions of data and i dont have any idea how to solve this one? Have you worked on this kind of data? Do you have any idea on how to send my command from server A to server B while server A also processing request and will not wait for server B's result and server B will just update the records in my database, i think this can solve my problem if doing it in parallel.

I have an application which was recently ported from Classic ASP to .NET 3.5. I'm pulling some data from a stored procedure and once retrieved, I'm doing using the Select method on the DataTable in a loop so I don't have to keep going back to the database. It appears that there's something wrong here as I can refresh the page repeatedly and see the memory usage increase by a few megabytes, up to the point where we get an error. If we recycle the app pool in IIS, it starts working again, for a little while.
Is there a memory leak in this method? I did some research on the subject and Microsoft said there was an issue like that in .NET 1.0 and 1.1, but I'm using a higher version.Or, is this something else, such as not managing resources correctly? Here's a snipped of my code:
[Code]....
Initially, this app was using XML instead of a datatable and using XPATH to query the data, but it was too slow. I thought using a dataset with DataTable selects was a better option, but now we found this issue. I was thinking since the loop executes several hundred times that getting all the data and filtering through it on the client was a better choice instead of calling several web methods to get the subsets of data.

it is apparent that "string builder" is better for building large string compared to sMyString = sMyString + "something";
what is a better way to search large in memory datasets? (like the example above - i know i could use loops, is there another way that i dont now about?)

To consume WCF from the web application. I added WCF reference to Window Service project as a service reference, everything seems fine. It updated app.config file, added service reference etc.
it was not working.

Does dataset store all its datatables' records into server memory if I just call one datatable from it?Lets make an example, a dataset with three datatables - tbCompany, tbCompanyStaffs, tbSalesOrderwhere tbCompany is the parent of tbCompanyStaffs. tbSalesOrder is an independant table.Does dataset load all tbCompanyStaffs records into the server memory as well when a class retrive data from tbCompany?

Environment.WorkingSet incorrectly reports the memory usage for a web site that runs on Windows 2003 Server.(OS Vers: Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2, .NET Vers: 2.0.50727.3607)
It reports memory as Working Set(Physical Mem.): 1952 MB (2047468061).
Same web site runs locally on Windows Vista with a Working Set(Physical Mem.): 49 MB (51924992).
I have limited access to the server and support is so limited.
so i have computed the total memory by traversing with VirtualQuery.
Total of pages with state: MEM_FREE is 1300 MB.
(I guess server have 4 GBs of RAM and PAE is not enabled, max user mode virtual address is 0x7fff0000.)
So, i know working set is not only about virtual memory. But, is it normal to have such a high working set while its very low on another machine?

I have a web application - .net 4. The client is having a requirement that he want to send email to his users on a regular basis about his new courses etc.
The webapplication created will hosted on a "Shared hosting environment" with no excess to windows services - file system other than the web root folder through FTP.
Due to shared hosting i cannot create a windows service for him which will check the database - if there are any scheduled mail to send every 5 min.
So my question is - Is there anyway i can run a wcf web service or any other web based service or page or handler which can keep running and automatically checks the database for any new scheduled mails - if yes start sending it automatically in an different thread.

I am unable to connect to my local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express using SQL Server Management Studio.I believe the problem is related to a change I made to the connection protocols. Before the error occurred, I had Shared Memory enabled and Named Pipes and TCP/IP disabled. I then enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP, and this is when I started experiencing the problem.
I have now set Named Pipes and TCP/IP back to disabled. When I try to connect to the server with SSMS (with either my SQL server sysadmin login or with windows authentication), I get the following error message:
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)"
My first question here is: why is it returning a Named Pipes error? Why isn't it using Shared Memory? It seems like it is not listening on Shared Memory for some reason? When I set Named Pipes to enabled and try to connect, I get the same error message. My windows account is does not have administrator priviliges on my computer.

I am building an asp.net application, using II6 on windows server 2003 (vps hosting).
I am confronted with an error I didn't receive on my development machine (windows 7, iis 7.5, 64 bit).
When my wcf service tries launching my query running against a local sql server this is the error I receive:
Memory gates checking failed because the free memory (43732992 bytes) is less than 5% of total memory. As a result, the service will not be available for incoming requests. To resolve this, either reduce the load on the machine or adjust the value of minFreeMemoryPercentageToActivateService on the serviceHostingEnvironment config element.

I have both VS 2005 and 2008 installed on my machine. 2005 is fine. For 2008, literally any asp.net project I try to create gets this eror. I try stepping into the code, and the error occurs apparently before anything that I can trap is loaded. There is no information written to the event log. I have tried this with a "Hello World" webpage with nothing else going on. Seems unique to my Windows Server 2003 machine.

I am maintaining C# .NET code written by somebody else, I get following exception few times,Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corruptThe code structure where I get the above exception is somethign like this,- it is using ref variables in following sequence,Variable-1 and variable-2 are local variables in App1, - App1: func1() which passes these variables reference to func2(), - App1: func2() passes same variables reference via .net remoting to another application (App2).-App2: does the same passes same received reference to another call 2 times.- The execption is occured while returning from App2.
(App1:func1(ref Var1, ref Var2) --> App1:func2(ref Var1, ref Var2) <---App1 .net remoting to App2--> App2:func3(ref Var1, ref Var2)--> App2:func4(ref Var1, ref Var2)-->variables getting updated and function returned to original caller)
My doubts are ,1. Is passing reference variables in such chain is correct? will it cause such exeption? Does .net support ref variable call directly?

We have a wfc layer that wraps the business classes and database access and use a client that lives on the database layer. Amongst our group we are attempting to form standards. Some want to have the client call the web method and pass the page they are requesting and the page size. Pass that to the database and then page in SQL Server use RowNum.Some want to cache the full list of objects in http cache on the service tier and page in memory. They concern here is memory use on the server.
Which would be best for a medium number of users with potentially large number of records to manage (say 30K) Is it better to cache them all in memory and work from there or page at the database as the application scales?

A customer reported that our asmx web service is continually increasing in memory (mem usage as well as private bytes). We are able to reproduce the problem in our lab with Windows 2003 Server SP2 (fully patched) on some of the machines. The customer is using Windows 2008.
We created a Hello World web service targeting the 2.0 framework built under VS2005 SP1 and a test client that continues to call it. The memory increases steadily - approximately 40K per client request. If the test app is paused, the memory remains the same. When it is closed, the memory drops. Explicit calling of GC.Collect does not drop the memory.
We have run the memory profiler on the service and the leak is all native memory. We have uninstalled/re-installed the Framework on one of the machines but no difference. To our knowledge all of the security and IIS settings are not modified. We have compared app pool, default web site and virtual directory properties to machines that have no problem and they are identical.
