DataSource Controls :: Query Over Two Data Sources?

Jan 12, 2010

I need to create a query which does a join between two tables which are in different databases. I can easily connect to each database, and write queries in each, however, I can't seem to find a way of generating a query which does a join between two tables from different databases.

DataSource Controls :: Storing Image To SQL Server And Retrieving From Two Diff Sources?

Feb 18, 2010

I am storing image (jpeg) files into SQL server 2005 using MS Access Forms. When I try to read and render it on a webpage using and C# code behind, it could not read it.

But if I write the image to SQL server using ASP.NET C# and then read it back using ASP.NET C#, it render the image just fine in the browser.

Does anyone know if Access write the blob is difference than ASP.NET write the blob into SQL server? I am using the same varbinary as my column in the database.

Architecture :: Using Data Sources Vs. Using Data Access Layer To Populate Presentation Controls?

Mar 17, 2010

We are using a tierd design with a Data Access Layer and classes for everything we need. This serves as an advantage because we do not have to write querys over and we can separate the Presentation layer from the Data Access Layer and Business Rules.I have always in the past populated GridViews, DataLists, repeaters,etc with SqlDataSources. This is what I have become accustomed to and I feel like it is simple. For querys such as Select * from Members, I feel like using a DataSource is simpler than having to go in the code and calling methods to populate and DataBind these presentation controls.

I am working with a gentleman who has introduced me to the world of Data Access Layers and we are breaking everything down into simeple, but effective queries to populate controls and do what we need to accomplish with this application. He is not very approving of using any type of DataSource. We are disagreeing on the time and place to use these class methods to call the database.So my question is, which is more widely used in the programming world? Do most people use DataSources to populate presentation controls regardless of the Data Access Layer they are working with? Which type of queries are best suited for a DAL - simple, populating queries or complicated joins and upserts?

Forms Data Controls :: Dynamic SQL Error(The IListSource Does Not Contain Any Data Sources)

Jan 31, 2011

I have a stored procedure written using dynamic SQL in the SQL Server and I am calling it on the code behind and adding parameters to it and filling a dataset and binding the data set to a Gridview. But I am getting this error when I bind it.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this?

It used to work fine when I did not use dynamic sql.

Forms Data Controls :: Display Gridview Data From Multiple Sources?

Jul 16, 2010

I need to display some data in a gridview. Its shipping data.

Part of the data can come from a generic database query. Static shipping data that can be looked up from the database. Part of the data is external and has to be queryed from USPS. Any suggestions on what is the best way to accomplish this.

Should I just programmatically fill the gridview from the code behind doing the database lookup manual and filling the gridview with manual data then going out and filling the rest of the gridview with the data obtained from the USPS service?

DataSource Controls :: SqlDataSource And Parameters Query / Trying To Accomplish Is Building Dynamic Query

Aug 22, 2010

1. I have a GridView on my page and it uses sqldatasource with parameterized query. What I want to do is, on page load (where nothing has been selected so no parameter supplied), I want it to query everything (something like SELECT * FROM [this_table]) but since my SelectCommand is something like

SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [this_column] = @someParameters AND [that_column] = @someParameters.

Can I play around with default value to achieve something like that but how ? Now, when the page loads, it doesn't show anything (No Gridview).

2. On my page, I made something like (username, gender, address, and more) and one single search button. That means, no single control enable auto postback. What I am trying to accomplish is building dynamic query

(if username specifed -> SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username).

If both username and gender are specified (SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username AND [gender] = @gender) and you know the rest. How can I do this using GridView and SqlDataSource ? To my knowledge, I can only specify one SELECT statement in a sqldatasource.

Forms Data Controls :: Data Structures Can Be Used As Data Sources For Gridviews?

Mar 31, 2011

so I know that DataTables are often used as the DataSources for gridviews. Lately, I have found that I can also use generic lists as data sources for gridviews. But I figured that out by simply trying it to see if it worked.

I have looked all over the web and simply cannot find any kind of inclusive list or description of exactly which data structures can be used as the data source for a gridview. Does anyone know if there is such a list, or some kind of reference that I can look to for this info?

Although it sounds like an obvious question, like there is obviously one out there and I just haven't looked, my experience has been that it's just not so.

DataSource Controls :: Reading Data From An SQL Query C#?

Feb 26, 2010

I don't know how to read data into variables from a SELECT query. I can add, update, and delete queries with no issues. I have browsed a few books, but everyone uses a different approach. Suppose I want to to run a query and 1 record is returned. How do I get the values into my variables.

Suppose my table name is "Job Orders", and the row returned has these 3 fields:

JobNumber, FirstName, Lastname

this is where I go blank ?

DataSource Controls :: Accessing FK From A Query Via Entity Query

Jan 21, 2010

I've got a query such as

Dim MediaQuery =
From m
In dB.DOWNLOADS _Where m.ID = id _Select

which returns a record from the database. One of the fields in the record is a FK to another table. I need to read this value to be able to set a dropdown based on the ID but I can't work out how to access it. For a standard record I can just do the following txtTitle.Text = MediaQuery.FirstOrDefault().TITLE

However with the foreign key it doesn't work like that. I've tried drpGroup.SelectedIndex = MediaQuery.FirstOrDefault().DOWNLOAD_GROUPS.ID where DOWNLOAD_GROUPS is the FK field but it returns Object reference not set to an instance of an object. If you're simply wanting to read some values from a single db record in the entitiy framework and one is a foreign key how should I go about getting the value?

DataSource Controls :: Sum Data From Two Columns In Different Tables - SQL Query

Feb 9, 2010

One table is Table_Bills.

The other table stores records of Payments made and is called Table_Payments.

In summary i want to show 3 figures - each in separate one field datagridview with a data_source in separate data_adapter:

1) Ammount_Due 2) Amount_Paid 3) Balance.

The first two are no problem but the last is giving me a headache.

I tried this:

SELECT SUM(DHB_New_Jobtable.DayWage) - SUM(DHB_Payments.Ammount) AS Expr1

myConnection = new OdbcConnection(strConString);
myConnection.Open(); // open connection
string strSelect= "select * from tbl_howells_product_data where title like" + "'" + strsearch + "%" +"'" + "order by product_id asc";
OdbcCommand myCommand = new OdbcCommand(strSelect, myConnection);

The problem is I need to check to see if any data has been returned from the SQL query, if there are no rows/ data returned by the query then I need to display a message to say that there aren't. I know that there isn't a 'number of rows method' for the dtrReader, so does anybody know how I could do this?

DataSource Controls :: How To Write A Query Which Reads Data From Optional DDL's?

May 5, 2010

I have couple of DDL's which let user choose couple of different values from it. Once the user has made his selection he clicks on the "Submit" buttion which redirects the user to the other page, which then displays table from backend SQL DB. The pages are named Page1.aspx and Page2.aspx resp. I am using Querystring to carry forward the values of the DDL's to Page2.aspx.

How can i modify the query in such a way that even if one of the DDL's is left blank the Query would ignore that and shall produce the table considering value of DDL2 in the where clause. In case both the DDL's are empty then the query will not have a where clause and shall showcase the complete table as such. I've written a query for this but it's not working the way it shoul.Here is my code for the SQLDataSource: [Code]....

2. What datatype shall i use to store the date in the database?

3. What SQL query shall i use to retrieve the data between 2 dates?

DataSource Controls :: Binding A Complex Query To A Data Control?

Apr 21, 2010

I'm trying to implement a recipe search page that allows users to specify search criteria by selecting checkboxes that match desired recipe attributes. All the data is stored in a database uing tables with 1 - many relationships. Each recipe can have multiple attributes from any of 5 attribute tables. I want to find all the recipes that match the user-selected criteria and display them in a grid. For example, the user may want a breakfast (attribute 1) recipe that is made with fruit and milk (attributes 2 and 3), is low-fat and high fiber (attributes 4 and 5), and takes less than 15 minutes to prepare (attribute 6). The query for this example might look something like:

SELECT distinct, recipes.difficulty, recipes.preptime, recipes.cooktime

FROM recipes, recipeMeals, recipeDishes, recipeFoodGrps, recipeNutrients, recipeFixTimes

WHERE = recipeMeals.recipeId and = recipeDishes.recipeId and = recipeFoodGrps.recipeId and = recipeNutrients.recipeId and = recipeFixTimes.recipeId and recipeMeals.mealId in (1) and
recipeDishes.dishId in (5) and recipeFoodGrps.fdGrpId in (1, 6) and recipeNutrients.nutrAttsId in (2, 3) and recipeFixTimes.fixTimeId in (1)

I' can generate the SQL but can't figure out how to bind it to a grid control. No could I see how to get any of the data controls to build the query for me. Is there a way to say "execute this query and display the results in a GridView"?

Forms Data Controls :: Entity Datasource And Query Extender Using LISTVIEW

Mar 9, 2011

I have a user control, named productslist.ascx. On pruductslist.ascx, I am using Entity Datasource and a QUERY EXTENDER and LISTview. I have a page Defualt.aspx. On Defualt.aspx, I have a TEXTBOX with a SUBMIT button for searching the site. Everthing works fine so far, AS LONG as the results of the Search is posted back to Default.aspx. What I want is for the results of the search to be posted on a different page.
So I created a new page, Results.aspx and set the postback url to it.

What I want is that when a user clicks the Submit button, after entering a search string, the text the entered is used to execute the query on Productslist.ascx and the results displayed on RESULTS.ASPX. Again, everything works fine as long as the results are posted on same page hosting the usercontrol, BUT I want the postback url to be a different page. I am coding in VB and VS 2010.
