DataSource Controls :: Question/Concern About Effects Of URL Routing?
May 31, 2010
I've implemented URL routing in my new ASP.NET 4 Web Forms application and it's actually working quite nicely. It's an ecommerce app so product names are in the URL now -- as opposed to ProductIDs.The other day, as I was testing the application, I came across a situation where two product names had identical names. It then dawned on me that in order to prevent this from happening, one of the things I'll have to implement is adding product categories in front of the product name -- which is not a bad idea to begin with. However, now I'll end up with a really long varchar field in the database that needs to be indexed. Additionally, I'll have to make sure that this field will stay unique i.e. I can't allow /electronics/digital-media-players/accessories/some-generic-recharger in that field more than once otherwise, my URL routing logic won't be able to determine which product the user is requesting.I'm sure others have run into such issues. I'd appreciate some advice on this.
Is adding product category in front of the product name in an effort to make it as unique as possible a good idea? After all it's a lot less likely that some-generic-recharger will be there more than once under a specific product category than in any category. Will indexing a field with such long varchar values be a problem in terms of database and lookup performance? Is there another approach that would work better in my situation?
All the users of my system get a common Id (SystemUserId). There are predefined roles/groups in the system. One user can be belong one or more of these groups. We are populating the menu/dashboard at runtime according to logging credentials. All common details (properties) of group are stored in main table (SystemUser) and specialized details are stored in relavant tables.(Teacher/Student). My solution already has classes called, SystemUser, Teacher & Student.
Problem:My system should support new group addition. (eg-: Auditor)This should support new properties to be added to SystemUser/Teacher/Student or any other new group added by the Customer at runtime.
I work in an ASP.net/ SQL Server development environment. If my only concern is speed should I go with parametrized queries or should I use an ORM such as nHibernate or LINQ?
I see that the changes done to CAS permissions (say changing the permission set of applications running in my computer) do not work immediately. I noticed before that the changes did take effect later on. Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to see the effects of the changes immediately?
I am using an accordion pane with 10 panes in a modal pop up extender.I also have 10 link buttons in the same modal pop up on clicking each button respective pane should be opened. There is no issue in opening the panes on button click. I did it in the click event dynamically. But the panes are opened directly without any easing effects or animation applied to them. Whereas when we click on header the animation is working.
For some reason, I changed something today while installing an instance of SQL Server. And now if I try to use the i.p. address of the machine instead of the name of the machine in DATASource of my sqlconnection string, I get an error. It worked fine before. Also, what exactly is "networkService" as an option for security when creating an instance of SQl Server?
i m trying to develop a tabbed content slider. during this i am facing two problems.
first i don't know how to create the queue effects mean, i want to animate first div, after completion of first animation than second animation would be started.
for this i using the callback function here, but i want to know is there any other procedure to do this thing.
second there is jerk in the animation at second and fourth tab.
I am using gridview with update panel Animation extender for updating effects. Everything is working fine but when page expires(means session ends) and I try to uupdate(edit, delete record) it fadeout the grid but donot fadein and shows following javascript error as image. I want if session ends it should redirect to login instead of fading out and showing javascript error message
ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 with Web Forms Routing thru Global.asax (System.Web.Routing and RegisterRoutes)IIS 7
Everything is working fine in my local machine, but it gives the following error in my hosting environment:
Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Routing, Version=3.5.0.0, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I did everything inside my web.config file mentioned in the following link:
I have a Web application where i have added a reference to a RESTful WCF. I got the WCF url Routing to work in my webapplication by adding Inherits="RestService.Global" to the Web applications Global.asax.
But then i tried to create url Routing for the Web application and it does not work with the Inherits="RestService.Global" in the Global.asax. If i take it away it works fine. Is there a correct way to do this.
I'm trying to create my own CMS and I've gotten a little bit stuck at the stage of URL routing.
I want clean URLs without extensions and I'd like to be able to create and modify them in a web based interface without any messing around with IIS or actual files.
I've seen how to create a static route, but for that I need to go into my Global.asax file and manually add it.I would like to have all of these routes stored in a database so that I can easily modify them later.
Does anyone know how this can be achieved?
Just for extra information, I will be attempting to create a feature so that if a path exists, but is later changed, a 301 redirect is created to the new URL, is this also possible? (My first problem is the main issue, but thought I might ask this as well just in case it makes a difference)
How to handle asp.net mvc routing along with asp.net webform routing. I have merged my mvc app into my existing web application. In my web application i have implement routing as below:
routes.Add("View Product Details", new Route("Product/{City}/{Manufacturer}/{Name}/{ProductID}/{*ProductType}"));
Similarly i have implemented routing in mvc as below
I have a search control in my master page with the following validation on the search btn's OnClientClick:
[Code]....
Then in the content page I have various controls with validation and a validation summary. I have few custom validators on the content page like below:
[Code]....
which uses the clientvalidationsfunctions which set the validity of the page. Now when I leave the search box in the header blank and I click the submit btn in the content page it posts me back to same (source) page and while debugging I find that the Page.IsValid is false. But if I write something in the search textbox in the master page and the fill the required fields in the content page and click the submit btn in content page it works fine. Why is that so? My validation groups are different on master page and content page.
i have problem white Object datasource. i have a multi-tier Application that include common layer ,DAL Layer, business logic and persantation layerwhen i add a object datasource to my page, it bring me only common layer classes . but i want use bisuiness layer classes what do i do ?
As you can see, the connectionstring parameter is defined to a specific connection string name and I need to be able to set such a parameter to a different value, for example, to a session variable content.
i am trying to create connection using OLEDB connection in my app. but i am not able to create the connection as in datasource i want to use Server.mappath, but cudn't find the right method to use it. i am trying to make connection with Access database file. following is code i have tried:
string path = Server.MapPath("~/uploadaccess/Production.mdb"); string ConnectionString = @"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & Server.MapPath("~/uploadaccess/Production.mdb")&";"; and also OleDbConnection myConnection = new OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & path&";"); and tried this OleDbConnection myConnection = new OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & Server.MapPath("~/uploadaccess/Production.mdb"));
and this is the error i am getting:
Operator '&' cannot be applied to operands of type 'string' and 'string'
I am storing a custom "Organisation" object as a session variable. One of the properties of the Organisation object is "OrganisationID" (integer). I have a DataSource that requires a parameter value to run, and I want to use a SessionParameter to populate this. In a previous version, I stored the OrganisationID directly as a session variable. In that case, I could easily access it like this:
[Code]....
However, how do I now access the OrganisationID property of an "Organisation" type session variable (called "Organisation")? I have tried this, which does not seem to work: <asp:SessionParameter Name="OrganisationID" SessionField="Organisation.OrganisationID" Type="Int32" />
i have two sqldatasource controls. one i use to display data in textbox's ,filter'd by a select parameter in page behind code. Once checked, i want to copy this data to the other datasource ,by selecting checkbox. Then display this data in detailsview control.
At present the two datasource controls declared , render data to the page simultaneously during pageload. I want to first check data in textbox's from first source, before second datasource is rendered to screen. note, both are filtered by a page variable. i wish to leave the textbox datasource control in situ, as other controls and code depend on it.The other detailsview datasource is my problem?
