Is It Possible To Detect If Cookies Are Disabled In One Round Trip

Aug 4, 2010

If I disable javascript and cookies, [URL] detects that cookies are disabled without a redirect. If you click the cart link, there's only a get on the cart page.

I'm guessing [URL] is most likely not using ASP.NET, but how would you accomplish detecting disabled cookies using ASP.NET without the use of javascript and redirecting? Is it possible to detect if cookies are disabled in one round trip?

Cookie Still Working When Browser Has Cookies Disabled?

Sep 2, 2011

It's weird, my firefox has cookies disabled, yet I am still able to retrieve the cookie.

Code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Response.Cookies["a"].Value = "1";
}
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Label1.Text = Request.Cookies["a"].Value.ToString(); //it returns value
}

Why is this?

How Does Session Handling Work / Sessions Eat Up All Memory If Cookies Are Disabled

Oct 28, 2010

In my project I have configured .NET's sessions to go into database.

I also have a global.asax which implements Session_Start().

In Session_Start() I write three things to the session:

The time the session started.

The user's host address.

A serializable device object wrapping the user's agent.

The problem is now that users which don't allow cookies won't allow session cookies either.

(Easily reproducable by putting the site URL to the restricted sites of IE).

If I keep on refreshing (put finger on F5) a new session is created for every request (-> no session cookie). Shortly, the web server process grows to some hundred megabytes.

It does not matter if you use IIS7 or Cassini Local Webserver.

The issue is now: the memory does not get released until the sessions time out. What is the logic here if sessions should really go to database? How long will .NET keep them in memory? Eventually, you'll even get Out Of Memory exceptions!

Anybody know? How to detect and prevent such (almost malicious) "attacks"?

For some reason, I changed something today while installing an instance of SQL Server. And now if I try to use the i.p. address of the machine instead of the name of the machine in DATASource of my sqlconnection string, I get an error. It worked fine before.Also, what exactly is "networkService" as an option for security when creating an instance of SQl Server?

Emulate Specific HTTP Headers?

Oct 5, 2010

I Have a specific set of HTTP response headers I'm trying to recreate in ASP.NET.
Here is how it looks in Fiddler (Raw):

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Length: 570746
Content-Type: audio/wav
Last-Modified: Wed, 19 May 2010 00:44:38 GMT
Accept-Ranges: bytes
ETag: "379d676ecf6ca1:3178"
Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-Powered-By: ASP.NET
Date: Tue, 05 Oct 2010 18:35:18 GMT

Here is how it looks on the Headers tab (same data. Different view)

I am trying to recreate the same set of headers (different values of course) with code, on an ASP.NET page. The biggest problem is with the cache settings and the ETag. It usually shows some "private" or similar cache setting and no ETag value, even though I'm trying to set it explicitly with

Response.Cache.SetETag

Use C# Regular Expressions To Emulate Forum Tags?

Feb 5, 2011

I am building a forum and I want to be able to use simple square bracket tags to allow users to format text. I am currently accomplishing this by parsing the string and looking for the tags. It's very tedious, especially when I run into a tag like this [URL]. Having to parse the attribute, and the value, and make sure it has proper opening and closing tags is kind of a pain and seems silly. I know how powerful regular expressions are but I'm not good at them and they frustrate me to no end. I think an example would get me started. Just a regex for finding tags like [b]bolded text[/b] and tags with attributes like the link

AJAX :: Trying To Emulate CalendarExtender To Match An Existing Calendar Using CSS

Apr 21, 2010

I'm trying to emulate an Ajax CalendarExtender to match an existing ASP:Calendar using CSS. Here are the properties (not in CSS but on the actual .aspx) of the regular ASP:Calendar:

<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1"
runat="server"
Visible="true"
BackColor="#99FFCC"
style="text-align: center"
Font-Bold="True"
ForeColor="Black">
<SelectedDayStyle
BackColor="Yellow"
Font-Bold="True"
ForeColor="Red" />
<WeekendDayStyle
BackColor="#14CBCB" />
<TitleStyle Font-Bold="True" />
</asp:Calendar>

So far setting several CSS settings, nothing appears but a white calendar with black numbers.

Security :: Third Party Cookies And Proxies Valid For P3p

Aug 28, 2010

I have an intranet site that is used to pull several other intranet applications/tools and database info to one place.One of the most popular features uses iFrames and jQuery tabs to give a broad overview of activities, signal etc in a network node. Chrome and Firefox eat it up with no problems, IE will work if you override the cookie policies that restrict 3rd party cookies
without a valid p3p (what a worthless standard). IE also works if you already authenticated yourself on the individual sites and the session cookies are still valid.

VS 2008 Essentially A User Login / Cookies?

Aug 31, 2010

I am making a small silly game but I am not sure of the best way to do it or where to start.Basically I will send a link to the people who are going to playing and on that page they will enter their name. I am then going to get an email with their name in so I can see they have accepted my challenge The game will then redirect to the next page. Thats not a problem.The problem is the game is going to played over a month and each time they visit the game on any page the website needs to know which player is the one who is playing.The other thing Is there is going to be a clue button for each question if they click the clue button for that question They will loose points. Now I want a way of of telling if a user was to display the clue close the website then come back and answer it.Is cookies the best way? Or maybe a cookie for the persons name and a server side file for each player so I have a record of who showed clues for what questions?

Security :: Internet Explorer 8 Denies Session Cookies

Jul 22, 2010

i am having this weird problem only when i deploy my site [localy Everything works fine] when you try loging in from IE 8, the page simple refreshes! and no authentication takes place After lot of research, i found out that Internet Explorer 8 denies session cookies and to confirm this, i unchecked Enable protected mode (can be found in, internet options, security), and then tried logging in, it worked perfectly fine just like it did in other browsers [Firefox and google chrome]. I have found one solution which is to lower the security level, but i cant tell every visitor on my site to do that since its not practical.

Cookies - Windows Identity Foundation - How To Get New Security Token

Feb 1, 2010

I'm writing an ASP.net application that uses Windows Identity Foundation. My ASP.net application uses claims-based authentication with passive redirection to a security token service. This means that when a user accesses the application, they are automatically redirected to the Security Token Service where they receive a security token which identifies them to the application.

In ASP.net, security tokens are stored as cookies.

I want to have something the user can click on in my application that will delete the cookie and redirect them to the Security Token Service to get a new token. In short, make it easy to log out and log in as another user. I try to delete the token-containing cookie in code, but it persists somehow.

How do I remove the token so that the user can log in again and get a new token?
