I am writing a simple form that will take in data and insert it into a db if it's a new record and update the existing record if it already exists. The insert works fine, but the update isn't working at all, yet the code looks solid to me and everything I've compared it to in my google searches.

I have detailsview with a SQLDataSource to 1 table (City) and am referencing another table (Unit) for one if it's fields.
[code]....
I changed the Unit Code (City Table) field into a template field and am using a dropdownlist item to reference the Unit Name from the (Unit Table) with the CityTable.Unit Code = UnitTable.Unit Code. However when I go into the update and change the dropdownlist item to another Unit Name it is keeping the original Unit Code value or it might even be selecting the first value from the dropdownlist item.

Updating the database using ado.net
I am sure I am not the first to ask this question but I cannot find an answer in these or any other forums. I guess I am not wording the question right. In short I have a gridview populated but a database via an SQLDatasource. I have an Edit column in the datagrid and an updatequery in the datasource. When the Edit is click the line goes into edit mode, the user then clicks Update and I get an error. Could not find control 'DropDownList1' in ControlParameter 'Frequency'. The only complication is that there is a drop down control when the "EDIT" column is selected. The dropdownlist gets it list from another SQLDatasource. This all works fine. Here is the code snip:
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AllowSorting="True" AutoGenerateEditButton="True"
i want to update the data of a database through a gridview update button
how can i attach a dataconvertion like this

Im trying to update my DB(DataBase) by using SQL UPDATE query ,but its not updating in the dataBase i receive confirmation(in testLabel) that one row is affected(dataReader = query.ExecuteReader(); return numbers of rows affected)...
I have given a HTML editortext control on a page,which generates HTML (i have to store it in my DB,that page is only for Admin) ,on pressing Update button , im receving in my testLabel that one row is affected(which shows DB is updated succesfully) but when i check my DB its in old state,it is not updating...
Here is my Event handler of Update Button which have to make updates in DB:

Creating a system with web front end and SQL backend (microsoft obviously). I have tried using the asp.netsqlprovider but i can;t as i am only allowed one database on the server, so i then tried to update my current database with the triggers to input the schema into the already existing database.Next step i create my own table with two simple fields of username and password and try and authenticate that way, i can't get that to work either.
I ahve limited permissions on the network as i am a University Student. I really don't know what to do. Never had to create a log on system before and i thought it would be far simpler than this. I ahve used Microsoft's sqlprovider schema before and it worked fine. I have also authenticated via IIS and AD too before. I can't do any of those two in this instance it seems.I need an alternative for logging in users, if needs be in can be crude. I also still need to have some kind of two different views too for logged in users and not logged in users, but that can change if needs must.Don't let me down people, haha. Think this posts in the correct place, i could not find another one i thought could be more relevant.
i am trying to update the database for a simple bank project. I am updating the current balance of an account. What i did was read the current balance first then add the deposited amount and then trying to update it to the database. here is the code
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

SqlConnection newSqlConnection = new SqlConnection();

I am beginner to sql database and asp.net.I want to fetch datetime from sql database and display it in textbox.I have wrote one stored procedure.The Procedure is
declare @o_Output varchar(30)
SET @o_Output =
getdate()
select @o_Output
Using the above procedure i'm getting current date and time.but my problem is i am hitting ql database while page loading itself. if i am hitting db on 12.40pm means, the textbox showing always the sametime only. I am trying to insert or update some data's into db that time only, i am hitting the db.The textbox datetime(12.50pm) has been changed that time alone. i want to update datetime to textbox at every minutes or seconds.
i have function writeToDatabase(); that function use to store registration information to database. and then after store todatabase success..another page will appear and need user to confirm all data that has been filled...then with the confirmation..all data will send to HOST. what about if send data to database success..and send data to host FAIL(any reason due to send to host fail) ... i just think about to cancel anything that function writeToDatabase() did..
View 1 RepliesI'm fairly new to asp.net and I'm trying get my arms around the data entry and update. I have created a nice data entry formusing a stored procedure. It works well but for a test database, it's pretty much overkill, but worthwell in learning how. I'm going through the ADO.NET quick start tutorial and I've ran across a couple of questions that I've not be able to answer. In my website,I'm wanting to edit the database by creating a separate form that is filled with the existing database information for that particular id. My main question is how to I take the information from the dataset and get it into my form. The code below is not fillingmy form. Not sure what I should be using here:
[Code]....
I have a table with Id, Name,...IsActive, etc. If user wants to delete a record from the user, he/she should update the field IsActive to false. I am able to acheive this functionality using the below steps,
1. Query the database for the row which is to be updated.
2. Update the property IsActive to false.
3. Submit the changes to the database.
This way i am successful. But i have a query here is that, when we execute steps 1 and 3, there will be two trips to the database for getting the required object and again updating the same object to the database.
Is this not a performance hit having multiple calls to DB for a simple operation.?
Do we have any other go, where in within a single call to database, can i update a field of row?
i am using a gridview which shows the data and a select column. when the user selects a record a detailsview is shown with the respective details and an edit button inside it. when the user clicks on the edit button the entire detailsview becomes editable and the user can now edit the selected record .here the problem starts cause when the user clicks on the update button there is an error stating that illegal variable/number or parameter not found.i am using sqldatasource to bind the gridview and detailsview with an unique RequestId fieldwhich detailsview sql datasource uses to bind the record uniquely.
View 3 RepliesI'm attempting to create a update form that will pull information from my database. I'm a little confused on how to get the information into the textboxes on my form. First I have my form:
[Code]....
This is where I'm getting stuck. I'm not certain what code I need or if what I have is correct. Is there an example what my next step(s) are? I would think that I need to set a variable to hold the data, maybe something like txtRace = Trim(GetString(0)???
I've used below code for inserting textbox values on button click....then back the page again, if i update the textbox value , I want the corrosponding values of the database table also updated..
SqlConnection dbConn = new SqlConnection();
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
dbConn.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Acarin_SchoolManagementConnectionString"].ToString();
if (dbConn.State != ConnectionState.Open)
dbConn.Open();
cmd.Connection = dbConn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.CommandText = "sproc_Ins_Student_Details";
cmd.Parameters.Clear();
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@StreetName", txtstreet.Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Email_Id", txtemailaddress.Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@WebSiteUrl", txtwebpage.Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@HouseType", txthousetype.Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@HouseNo", txthouseno.Text);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@City", txtcity.Text);
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
I want to reformat one column in database. So that I've used strong typed dataset by drag and drop in VS 2008. When I've already updated all data in dataset, I call method update() of table adapter to perform update my modified data of dataset into database. But it doesn't work.
Below is my code
[Code]....
The RemoveWhiteSpace(string input) is my function to remove special characters from dataset.
my database does not update when i pass edited values from textboxes, which is kind of weird. I even try using vb class file to receive the values. but it just never do so.
View 5 RepliesThis is a very common error as evidenced but the very large number of problems and suggested solutions on the web. I finally got around it last week but can't remember what was the step that did it. At that time, I was building a web application rather than a web site. Is that the difference? As you can see, it is no longer in the APP_DATA folder and is named membership.mdf rather than aspnetdb.mdf. I ran aspnet_regsql.exe to create it and actually had it working and was updating it successfully. But for other reasons, I had to scrap the application and decided to re-create it from scratch as a web site rather than a web application. I had been using Visual Studio 2008 to build the web application but am now using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition to build the web site. Unfortunately, the Visual Studio application will no longer open so I can't verify that the web application still works. Can anybody help? (Please!!!) BTW, ASPNET and NETWORK SERVICE both have full control over the membership.mdf.
View 1 RepliesI have been in the process of updating my code with security methods, and I've been learning this from [URL] (or "Security Guidelines: ASP.NET 2.0"). In the middle of the page under "When Constructing SQL Queries, Use Type Safe SQL Parameters" it says "Use type safe parameters when constructing SQL queries to avoid possible SQL injection attacks that can occur with unfiltered input". Now, what they suggested was to use code like:
"DataSet userDataset = new DataSet();
SqlDataAdapter myCommand = new SqlDataAdapter(LoginStoredProcedure", connection);
myCommand.SelectCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
myCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add("@au_id", SqlDbType.VarChar, 11);........"
But, I was already using code like:
"var dataSource = (SqlDataSource)form1.FindControl("sqlDataSource5") ;
dataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("someVal", val);"
So now, to use type safe parameters, I decided to include it like:
"var dataSource = (SqlDataSource)form1.FindControl("sqlDataSource5") ;
dataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("@someVal", DbType.Int16, val);
dataSource.UpdateParameters["@someVal"].Size = 1;"
So, that would be how I would modify my current code base to use type safe parameters in sql updating/inserting.
Getting to my actual question, as it was said "Use type safe parameters when constructing SQL queries to avoid possible SQL injection attacks that can occur with unfiltered input". First off, this suggests that this should apply to unfiltered input. Also, in their example they only did this for an ID.
So, what I'd like to know, when it comes to "unfiltered input", does this mean as long as the input is unfiltered I must use type safe parameters, or even filtered input shall have this (just to be sure), like, input that has been ran through a regularexpression check? Shall I do this for all values I insert/update into the database, or just IDs and important things?
The way I see it right now is that it would be a good precaution to just do type safe checks on everything (literally) that updates/inserts into the database just to be extra safe. But, I really am unsure if this is really the best idea, because if I did, would this possibly cause overprocessing of information? Can this cause too much strain on server resources? If my fears serve true, what would be a good suggestion of how I could implement this properly without having to worry about what I said?
I build a webpage to edit the data entry, all the textbox wroks fine. However when I update the value originally took in using dropdown list , I get error and couldn't get correct update.
View 2 RepliesI am doing update query to edit my records and save to my database...I am getting the query expression exception...syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'WebLogin=krish'.
string strUserName = Request.QueryString["UserName"].ToString();
DateTime dateTimeNow = DateTime.Now;
string ConnString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Data"].ConnectionString;[code]....
I am getting the exception syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'WebLogin=krish'.
I have this working on another project I have but cannot figure out why I can't get it to work on another. I have a dropdownlist box with employee names. When an employee is selected, I display the data (address, phone, email, etc.) in a series of textboxes. User can make changes and then click on an "Update" button where I attempt to update the database with the changes using the sqldatasource. The code works without any errors, but the database does not update.
Here's the sqldatasource code (the code behind follows):

Code Behind for the "Update" button control which was intended to update the database with sqldatasource3.update() command at the end:

I have a FormView bound to LinqDataSource, that is intended to allow editing of a single product's details, that is selected from a GridView. The LDS has a Where parameter set to point to the GridView control (i.e. a ControlParameter).
View 1 RepliesScenario:
I am creating a custom gridview control which has a custom CheckBoxTemplateField column (deriving from TemplateField class). This template field column has custom Checkboxheadertemplate (implementing ITemplate) and CheckboxItemTemplate (also implementing ITemplate). In InstantiateIn method of both templates (header as well as Item template), I am adding a checkbox control which has Autopostback = true.
My requirement is:
I want to mark all the values in the binding column of datasource if checkbox in headertemplate is checked. I dont want to mark only rows visible on grid. I WANT TO MARK ALL ROWS IN DATASOURCE. I want to do this in _CheckedChanged event of checkbox in header template.
Problem I am facing: When I check/uncheck the checkbox in header, it postbacks. so in OnCheckedChanged event, gridview's datasource is null. Secondly, in any event of gridview, I could access only those rows of datasource for which corresponding rows are visible in gridview through Gridviewrow.DataItem property. But I want to set it for all rows in datasource.
