DataSource Controls :: Update Database Using Sqldatasource?
Jan 14, 2010
i am using a gridview which shows the data and a select column. when the user selects a record a detailsview is shown with the respective details and an edit button inside it. when the user clicks on the edit button the entire detailsview becomes editable and the user can now edit the selected record .here the problem starts cause when the user clicks on the update button there is an error stating that illegal variable/number or parameter not found.i am using sqldatasource to bind the gridview and detailsview with an unique RequestId fieldwhich detailsview sql datasource uses to bind the record uniquely.

I have this working on another project I have but cannot figure out why I can't get it to work on another. I have a dropdownlist box with employee names. When an employee is selected, I display the data (address, phone, email, etc.) in a series of textboxes. User can make changes and then click on an "Update" button where I attempt to update the database with the changes using the sqldatasource. The code works without any errors, but the database does not update.
Here's the sqldatasource code (the code behind follows):
[Code]....
Code Behind for the "Update" button control which was intended to update the database with sqldatasource3.update() command at the end:

I have a FormView which is bound to an SQLDataSource. When a user clicks on a save button the form, I need to write any changes made to the FormView back to the table.
I have a Stored Procedure on my MSSQL 2005 database that should be executed when the user clicks on the save button.
It appears the Update is firing, but when I trap the DbCommand object in the SQLDataSource's 'Updating' event, all of the parameters that should be passed to the Stored Procedure are coming through as NULLs. Consequently, the Stored Procedure isn't updating anything.
In the click event of the save button I'm explicitly firing the SQLDataSource's Update method:
[Code]....
The parameters in the SQLDataSource <UpdateParameters></UpdateParameters> section appear to be correct.
Can anyone give me an idea on what to investigate to figure out why it appears the Update is only picking up NULLs?

i couldnt find a specific answer to this question, i am relatively new to .net :)
i have a gridview that is displaying data from a sqldatasource in my page_load event. i need to loop through the records and update each value of a particular column BEFORE being set into the GridView.
i have tried converting to a data set and looping through updating the values, however it seems that one i initially run my query the values get set right into the GridView and i can't update them after that.
Do I need to add one of the GridView functions like Databound and do the loop in there?

Using a FormView with a SqlDataSource, I'm attempting to Update data
by calling a stored proc in code behind. I was having trouble getting parameters
using Update Parameters in the SqlDataSource, but found a working solution by
coding the parameters.
The problem now is I'm getting an "Updating is not supported by data source 'XYZ' unless UpdateCommand is specified'.

I have this sqldatasource:
<asp:sqldatasource id="SqlDataSourceX" runat="server" connectionstring="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyConn%>" providername="System.Data.SqlClient"
selectcommand="SELECT ItemNum, MIN(DateAdded) as [DateAdded]
FROM Items WITH (NOLOCK)

When I call select in codebehind, after 30sec it throws timeout expired SqlException:
[Code]....
again , this select took up to 3 sec to be executed. In application I tried to use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter instead of SqlDataSource, with the same query, and again it took up to 3 sec.
If I choose tighter interval (e.g '2011-01-20 00:00:00' - '2011-01-21 00:00:00') , there is no timeout exception, so I know that sqldatasource select is executed correctly. So the conclusion is that sql server is not using index while executing query sent from sqldatasource, but is using index whenever else. I have also checked the index statistics on sql server and it is like that. In profiler i can see slight difference between this two cases. As for SqlDataSource, in events table, in first column "EventClass" after 30 sec, there is this: "RPC:Completed" and application throws timeout. If i use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter then at the same place there is this: "SQL:BatchStarting" and "SQL:BatchCompleted" and application does not throws timeout(the index has been used).
what is so special on SqlDataSource connection, that Sql Server performs differently compared to other types of connections?

everytime I modify an SQLdatasource using VS wizards, I have to dettach the mdf in VS's server exporer, then hit refresh in the browser, then get the applicaiton is offline error message please remove some pia file, but i usually just count to 12 and then hit refresh again and the page renders properlyhad scoured the forum on more than one ocasstiion, think it has something to do with the Admin rights within SQL, Ive tried the SQL server surface configuration tool, and add administrator stuff, but not sure if i should add (user to provision) something like the asp.net thing, or network services or ??also cant figure out where to view which administrators are actually on SQL server,

Creating a system with web front end and SQL backend (microsoft obviously). I have tried using the asp.netsqlprovider but i can;t as i am only allowed one database on the server, so i then tried to update my current database with the triggers to input the schema into the already existing database.Next step i create my own table with two simple fields of username and password and try and authenticate that way, i can't get that to work either.
I ahve limited permissions on the network as i am a University Student. I really don't know what to do. Never had to create a log on system before and i thought it would be far simpler than this. I ahve used Microsoft's sqlprovider schema before and it worked fine. I have also authenticated via IIS and AD too before. I can't do any of those two in this instance it seems.I need an alternative for logging in users, if needs be in can be crude. I also still need to have some kind of two different views too for logged in users and not logged in users, but that can change if needs must.Don't let me down people, haha. Think this posts in the correct place, i could not find another one i thought could be more relevant.

I'm fairly new to asp.net and I'm trying get my arms around the data entry and update. I have created a nice data entry formusing a stored procedure. It works well but for a test database, it's pretty much overkill, but worthwell in learning how. I'm going through the ADO.NET quick start tutorial and I've ran across a couple of questions that I've not be able to answer. In my website,I'm wanting to edit the database by creating a separate form that is filled with the existing database information for that particular id. My main question is how to I take the information from the dataset and get it into my form. The code below is not fillingmy form. Not sure what I should be using here:

I have a table with Id, Name,...IsActive, etc. If user wants to delete a record from the user, he/she should update the field IsActive to false. I am able to acheive this functionality using the below steps,
1. Query the database for the row which is to be updated.
2. Update the property IsActive to false.
3. Submit the changes to the database.
This way i am successful. But i have a query here is that, when we execute steps 1 and 3, there will be two trips to the database for getting the required object and again updating the same object to the database.
Is this not a performance hit having multiple calls to DB for a simple operation.?
Do we have any other go, where in within a single call to database, can i update a field of row?

I'm attempting to create a update form that will pull information from my database. I'm a little confused on how to get the information into the textboxes on my form. First I have my form:
[Code]....
This is where I'm getting stuck. I'm not certain what code I need or if what I have is correct. Is there an example what my next step(s) are? I would think that I need to set a variable to hold the data, maybe something like txtRace = Trim(GetString(0)???
