DataSource Controls :: Drill Down Into The Description Property To Get The Actual Descriptive Text

May 28, 2010

SELECT *
FROM
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE COLUMN_NAME =
'Description'
vw_aspnet_Applications Description
aspnet_Roles Description
vw_aspnet_Roles Description
aspnet_Applications Description

The above query returns only those columns that are named "Description" from the default asp.net membership tables. That is not what I want. Each column has a property called "Description" which allows the developer to provide a detailed description for each SQL field (a.k.a. "column"). Example: aspnet_Membership has a column "Password" which does not have anything in the "Description" property although it should have imo
because without a description, it is not obvious that the password's value happens to be encrypted.

Scenario: Assume that I have a table called Trucks that has data like

Number Odometer ... et cetera

It's schema looks something like this (abbreviated)

COLUMN_NAME Description
Number yyyynnnn where 'yyyy' is year truck was purchased, 'nnnn' is sequential number.
Odometer most recent odometer reading in kilometres

How would I code a SQL SELECT statement in SSMS 2008 to display the schema data such as a column's name, its description text, et cetera? because "description" is such a generic term, I've so far been unsuccesful at locating further information in Google.

I need to create one custom text box control which should be bind with data base.

I am referring following link...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.databoundcontrol.aspx

I used DataBoundControl to create my control but i am not able to do it properly.

public class SimpleTextBoxControl : DataBoundControl

private TextBox nameTextBox;
public string DataTextField
{

{
object o = ViewState["DataTextField"];
return ((o == null) ? string.Empty : (string)o);
}

ViewState["DataTextField"] = value;
}
}
[
Bindable(true),
Category("Data"),
DefaultValue(""),
Description("The text to display on the link."),
Localizable(true),
PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerDefaultProperty)
]
public virtual string DataTexValue
{
get
{
string s = (string)ViewState["Text"];
return (s == null) ? String.Empty : s;
}
set
{
ViewState["Text"] = value;
}
}
protected override void PerformDataBinding(IEnumerable retrievedData)
{
if (retrievedData == null)
return;
base.PerformDataBinding(retrievedData);
Controls.Clear();
nameTextBox = new TextBox { ID = "nameTextBox" };
foreach (object dataItem in retrievedData)
{
if (DataTextField.Length > 0)
{
nameTextBox.Text = DataBinder.GetPropertyValue(dataItem, DataTextField, null);
}
DataTexValue = nameTextBox.Text;
}
this.Controls.Add(nameTextBox);
}

DataSource Controls :: Is It Possible To Use A Property Of An Object Instance Property For Object Data Source

May 3, 2010

Traditionally with an Object Data Source, the wired up class will have its public properties available for binding (i.e. Gridview columns, etc.) which works well. But what if one of my wired up business objects has a property that is an object itself; can I drill down to a property on that object property and still use it?

So in additiona to the traditional:MyBusniessObject.OrderID...I want to use:MyBusniessObject.Customer.NameID
Your 1st response might be to just wire up the 'Customer' class, but I need properties both on 'MyBusinessObject'and 'Customer'. I do not think this can be done, as the ODS will not display properties on an object instance property. I have tried manually typing in the drilled down value as well, but that wasn't a success either.

DataSource Controls :: Access Property Of Object As Session Variable As Declarative Datasource Parameter Value

Oct 27, 2010

I am storing a custom "Organisation" object as a session variable. One of the properties of the Organisation object is "OrganisationID" (integer). I have a DataSource that requires a parameter value to run, and I want to use a SessionParameter to populate this. In a previous version, I stored the OrganisationID directly as a session variable. In that case, I could easily access it like this:

[Code]....

However, how do I now access the OrganisationID property of an "Organisation" type session variable (called "Organisation")? I have tried this, which does not seem to work: <asp:SessionParameter Name="OrganisationID" SessionField="Organisation.OrganisationID" Type="Int32" />

Forms Data Controls :: Hyperlink In Gridview In One Particular Level Of A Drill Down Application?

Jun 28, 2010

We are working on a drill up/drill down application. The drill functionality is provided by the dropdown list box. The data breaks down during drill down and roll ups during drill up (sum and averages)

We have used the gridview (which is not databound) for data presentation to generate a column during each drill level to indicate the current drill level.

At one particular drill level, a hyperlink has to be provided for an existing field on the data, to display its details.

Can hyperlink be provided in a gridview that is not databound?

Can a hyperlink control be created in a gridview during runtime (when the specific drill level is selected in the drop down list box)?

As a solution to this problem, we created a databound gridview, with the hyperlink for the required column and made it visible for that particular drill level.

I've tried to use conditional logic on the .aspx page when setting the Text property, but everything I've tried results in an error. I've also tried using code-behind to set the Tetxt property in the Page_Load event. This doesn't generate an error, but it doesn't set the property either.

Forms Data Controls :: Set Text Property Of TextBox In DetailsView To Query String Value?

Sep 19, 2010

I'm tyring to write a simple DetailsView only used for inserting new records that will pre-fill a textbox with a query string value. Here's the DetailsView:

[code]....

All I want to do is set VenueID_FK.Text to = the "VenueID" querry string. I also want the user to be able to see the VenueID number as they are filling out GridView1.

I know this is probably a simple thing, but I am very new to asp.net. I thought I could handle this in the page load event, but when I try something like this

TextBox VenueID_FK = (TextBox)DetailsView1.FindControl("VenueID_FK");

And then follow by setting the Text property programitically. I've accomplished something similar to this on a different page using a FormView, but only for ReadOnly mode and it was handled in the databound event on that page.

I get the error "The name 'DetailsView1' doesn't exist in the current context." when trying to do the above mentioned. When trying the same line in the databound event here, I get the same error.

Forms Data Controls :: Link Button In Gridview / To Capture The Item By Click On Text Property?

May 25, 2010

I have a link button in my gridview. It is populating correctly; however, being I am populating the values in the gridview using "Eval()" method I don't know how to get the value of the selected Link Button (which is only selected by a user actually clicking
the Link Button).

The user can click on the text directly (instead of showing the "Select" auto created). I want to be able to capture the item they have clicked on's Text property.

Example:Column 1

Value1
Value2
Value3

When the click on "Value2" I want the text property to be stored in a string variable (In this case the text would be "Value2"). In the past I have captured this through GridView.SelectedValue; however, I am not using autopopulate selected button so I need to do this manually and I am unsure as to how I will do this.

Here is my code for HTML and I have not created any code for C# (I want to capture the item using C# in my Grd_Tables_SelectedIndexChanged Event)
[code]....
