Nov 8, 2010I've built a facebook like application where users can upload at most 10 images. I also have a search function for managers. I think I need to create som views and index the tables, but before I do that I'd like some pointers or tips on how to do this.I don't think we will get more than a couple of thousand users and...I have a few stored procedures that joins the users table with the items table to get items from a specific user. Would this be a good situation to create a view? Do I index this view too even if both tables are indexed already?

May 18, 2010We are working in a new N-Layered application with EF4 as ORM. As a requirement, we need to give support for both SQL Server and Oracle existing databases.
Our wish was to build a single EDMX model and then generate our business entities from a TT file.
The main problem was that database providers may generate different .NET types from our database field types. In this case, we'll have different EDMX models and then different auto-generated entities, which is more or less the same as have two different applications.
I don't know if we could have different SSDL files with specific database information (one for Oracle and another one for SQL Server) in separete files and share CDSL and MSL information for both databases.
Would be this solution possible?
Someone knows some other way to work with Oracle and SQL Server using EF4?

That way I know exactly what's happening and I can explain and control things.
I'm using stored procs with LINQ to SQL for CRUD operations.
For select, insert and delete - using stored procs with LINQ to SQL is pretty straightforward.
However, if I want to use my own custom stored procs with L2S for updates what's the best way to accomplish this?
Can you provide some code that shows the best approach that you would personally choose for this?
Configuration :: Trying To Make A Program Work With Our IIS Server?
Feb 2, 2011I have been trying to make a program work with our IIS server, but it's run into a tricky problem that's been driving me nuts. When I debug the program, everything works perfectly; users are able to log in and they see the appropriate content according to the user's role. When logging in from a remote location, however, the program seems to have trouble finding the users' roles. Users can log in, but they cannot see any role-specific information, so they are stuck on the login page forever.
I tried adding a line of code to find the roles of a particular user. In debug mode, it returned the roles correctly, but when accessed through the server, it returned an empty array that caused my site to crash.

Then when I go to open up the SQL Mgmt Studio, I look into the processes and the particular connection that has ran with the SQL that my function runs appears to remain open. So to me, it looks like ADO.NET is performing some kind of pooling. Is it safe to make that conclusion? How would I be able to tell if the connection is available to be used again by the ADO.NET pool?

Jan 25, 2011I've tried to get a list of the IDs of the controls, but when I try to access he ID field of control at index 0 I get a null reference exeption, even though the collection has a .Count == 5. Any clue why or if it can be done and how? I've tried this both in Page_Load and off a button_click event.
Assuming you need the ID to set the proper tab index via the control collection object, the following code should produce the list of the names of the 5 controls. The output is '01234' to the multiline textbox... (the values of x)

The idea is to use the logged in user credentials for invoking the web service (This is critical since the web service use the authentication credentials to assign the owner of the created or updated record) and for executing the stored procedure.When I am using VS.Net integrated web server the result is just fine (May be because this server starts under current logged in user account) The SQL Server SP returns expected results (Even when I execute them from Query Analyzer) and web service credentials is set correctly to the current logged in user. However when I host the application in local IIS it's not working as expectedly. The Sql Server stored procedure returns EMPTY dataset and web service credentials is set to empty.I am using

Bothe the web service host virtual directory and my application virtual directory is using Windows Authentication in Directory Security of IIS.

Forms Data Controls :: GridView Not Updating Indexes To Include New Items?
May 26, 2010I have a gridview bound to a List<> which shows all compliments received by our company. The list is refreshed every time the page loads and (IsPostBack == false).When I run the application, the list binds to the gridview and all is good. I am using the gridview.SelectedIndex value to return the correct item from the list, add it to a session variable and move to a new page to edit it.This works perfectly until I insert a new record on a separate page and then return to the default page. The list refreshes correctly and displays the new record in the gridview, but the gridview indexes seem to still be attached to their previous records i.e. clicking the edit button in the top row (index 0) returns the data from the 2nd row (index 1).I've tried binding the list directly, and I've tried using an objectdatasource. I've also tried setting EnableViewState and EnableCaching to false on the gridview (and the objectdatasource when using it). None of this has updated the indexes.
