Debugging Application Built With Mixed Asp Versions

Feb 15, 2010

I am working on an application built using ASP.NET 1.1 but that invokes services built in ASP.NET 2.0.

Attempts to debug my code by setting a breakpoint and attaching the w3wp.exe process fail because IIS is running under ASP.NET 2.0.

If I select ASP.NET 1.1 as the version in IIS then debugging works, but the calls to the 2.0 services (which are everywhere) causes the page to crash.

Does anyone have a solution/workaround to this problem?

Built Assembly Not Matching Source When Debugging Under IIS 7.5

Mar 31, 2011

I have a problem debugging a web forms application that is configured to use IIS for debugging, under Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2010. An example has just occurred, where I make a change to the code behind for a web form, save, and apparently rebuild before starting the app using F5. The app starts, and I get an error message trying to do something in the app. I tell the debugger to break when an exception is thrown and try my task again, only to be told The source file is different from when the module was built. where the module is C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files oot9d7b45ca11a98b19assemblydl35e6cf0b2636409d4_dfeecb01PerfixEMS_Admin.DLL

The physical folder for my test web site is set to the web application project's source folder, so I have always assumed that IIS will look in the bin folder for required assemblies, and these will be rebuilt as expected. Why is this not happening?

Debugging On A Built-in Web Server Suddenly Stops?

May 17, 2010

I have Windows Server 2008 (64-bit), VS 2008 with its built-in webserver and an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 webapp. All I'm trying to do is to debug said app. I have a bunch of breakpoints, but they behave in a very strange way. When I fist start a debugging session with F5 and hit a breakpoint, the debugger stops just fine. However, after serveral F10s/F11s debugging suddenly "stops" (no exceptions at that time), but neither VS detaches from browsers' process, nor webapp execution stops: Visual Studio stays attached, and web request continues executing as usual.I tried various browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE), but to no avail.

Page Inheritance In Mixed .net Forms And MVC Application?

May 27, 2010

I'm working on a web application. One of my co-workers has written some asp.net forms pages. The page classes all inherit from BasePageClass, which of course inherits from the Page class. I wish to add some MVC controllers that I've been told need to use the same logic implemented in the BasePageClass. Ordinarily, I would want to inherit the functions in the BasePageClass in the controller classes, but this breaks the inheritance heirarchy.

Configuration :: Moving From Mixed Language Website To Web Application?

Jun 4, 2010

We have a web site with pages written in both vb and c#. We wish to move from a web site to a web application. As a web application cannot mix languages, my thought was to build two separate applications within the same solution and have the main(c#) reference the secondary(vb) and (somehow) copy the vb pages into corresponding places in the c# directory structure at build time.

VS 2008 Web Deployment MSI Built On XP Works Fine, But MSI Built On Windows 7 Does Not Work?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm running into a weird issue that I can't find an answer for anywhere I've looked (and I've looked a ton).I built a web deployment project with Visual Studio 2008 Team System on my old Win XP machine. This has always worked flawlessly and installed everywhere. I can also copy this MSI to my new Windows 7 Ultimate machine and it again installs just fine.

HOWEVER, when I rebuild that exact same web deployment project on my new Win7 machine, also using VS2008, the MSI will build OK, but when I then run it to install my software I get a dialog box telling me "the installer was interrupted." Interestingly, when I built this MSI in my new environment one additional warning popped up during the build process, which was "Unable to copy the schema file '(null)'"After many searches and reading different web pages, I know this has to do with these two registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudio9.0DeploymentSchema]
"DefaultMSISchemaFile"="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools\Deployment\Vspkgs\..\VsdSchema\Schema.msi"
"DefaultMSMSchemaFile"="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools\Deployment\Vspkgs\..\VsdSchema\Schema.msm"

Yet, everything checks out. All permissions are correctly configured, etc., etc. Then, when I enable the built-in administrator account and log in as that, and then rebuild this same web deployment MSI the "Unable to copy the schema file '(null)'" warning no longer appears. Then when I log back out, log back in as myself and then run this newly built MSI it installs fine, just like the original one that was built on XP.I also tried uninstalling VS2008 and re-installing it as the super user, but that also didn't change anything. And yes, I did also configure devenv.exe to run as administrator.

Has anybody seen this? Or is it a requirement that you can only compile deployment projects as the super user? That cannot be right.I've been thrashing for more than five days and for the life of me cannot figure this out. Of course, I can run as the super user when developing, but I thought the new security model in Win7 was designed exactly so you don't have to.

How To Built A Feature In An Application, and How To Integrate That Dynamicly

Nov 9, 2010

Is it possible to built a feature in a asp.net application which will let the user schedule things that would be run on the background?

For instance, say that there is a option in the application to send a email to every customer in the system on their birthaday. The user from the system could activate the option in the application, and for as long as the option is activated the system queries
every day if some customers birthday is on that day and then send a email to that customer.

I think it has to integrate with the taskscheduler, but i don;t know how to integrate that dynamicly in a application

Visual Studio :: Set Application Name For Built In IIS For VS 2005?

Aug 5, 2010

How do I set the ASP.net application name for the built in IIS for VS 2005? I am setting up a new dev box with an existing application. It has all the users and roles already created so I just need to specify the correct Application name and everything should work. It seems to run off the directory name of the project by default. But that isn't working completly for me. The Application name in the database is '/budgetsite' But when I put the files in c:developmentudgetsite' the web server uses 'budgetsite' as the Application Name. I am trying to avoid installing IIS on this box.

Debugging Dll In Vb.net Web Application?

Sep 3, 2010

I have a vb.net web application in visual web developer 2008 with a dll file and i need to debug a method in that dll. I also have project source files for the dll file itself. How could i make the web application use the source instead of the dll file so that i'd be able to debug it? I've tried debugging the dll project itself, but it's not a very good solution, because it seems the dll depends on the web application settings and data and it would simply be too much work to get it working.

C# - Remote-Debugging In Running Web Application

Feb 5, 2010

I've setup break points in the code file and Built the application transfering the dll to the remote machine bin file and the aspx page to a folder within the web application. Note this folder is not in the same folder hierarchy as it built in. I'm not sure if thats the problem. Basically we are appending new functionality to a web application.I've copied the correct Remote Debug Monitor to the server and have it running.

C# - Application Runs When Debugging But Not When Published

May 10, 2010

When publishing my web application and then running it will return the error

"Could not load file or assembly 'BaseApplicationName' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format."

However if I run the application through debugging (f5) it runs correctly.

I guess what it comes down to is

what differences are there when running an application through debugging vs publishing it that would cause a problem like this?

When publising I have it set to delete all existing.

History of how it started... I added the 32 bit Oracle.DataAccess dll to my 64 bit system. It would not work and crash giving the same error as above but with the Oracle.DataAccess name instead of the baseApplicationName. I have since removed all references to it and removed the dll to try and get it to run without it once again.

Debugging Multi-threaded WEB Application?

Feb 8, 2010

I'm having a hell of a time trying to debug things. Basically I want to step through each line of code to see whats happening. But when I try to step to the next line of code, 9 times out of 10 it just finishes all execution instantly without letting me step.

For example if I set a breakpoint in the thread code, that breakpoint gets hit, and I might be able to step to the next line or 2 of code, but after that the next step just jumps to the end of everything as If I had pressed F5 (continue). I assume this is happening because the context gets switched from my current thread to the main thread (or some other thread), and Visual Studio gets confused and just finishes execution, ignoring my breakpoints.

I know about the Threads window, and I have tried many different combinations of freezing and flagging different threads, but nothing accomplishes what I want. I basically want to just keep hitting F10, and step through EVERY LINE OF CODE, regardless of what thread it's in. Im surprised this isnt the default behavior.
