What is the best dedicated hosting site for an asp.net 2.0 site? The key consideration for me are:
(i) Cost
(ii) Processor
(iii) Harddisk
(iv) Traffic i.e. Bandwidth
(v) Technical support
I have used Lunarpages and Godaddy before but I am considering 1&1 but am not sure what their technical support is like.
I am planning to build a news publication website that should be automatically scalable when traffic is increasing. I have good experience in developing web applications using ASP.NET and PHP. To move forward on selection of specific technology here are some questions for which I need some clarifications.
My primary intention is to reduce the hosting charges. If we choose LAMP this will cost lower than ASP.NET on Windows. As my intention is to host web application on cloud service, will this make any difference? Means, for dedicated servers we need to pay extra cost for Windows O/S if you compare it with Linux. If we go for cloud servers, will they charge anything for O/S for each instance or will they just charge on computation hours irrespective of Operating System?
Do we have complete control (like dedicated server) on cloud instance to install any other softwares?
Do we need to host web server and and database server on multiple instances when traffic is increasing or will a big size instance can handle huge traffic?

The site is made in ASP.NET C# and also have silverlight application in it. I am not able to configure or wither host the site on the server. I am having IIS 7 and Windows 7 as the OS. I have enabled IIS 7 on it. (I am using the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and have almost no knowledge on hosting on IIS 7)

I want to publish an asp.net 4.0 project to a hosting site. I uploaded the three SiteMaster files and the three default files. It has an error on the first line of the SiteMaster.aspx. The error message was "Could not load type 'PorjectName.SiteMaster'." What files should I upload?

What I want to do is use this netwrok to host the website I have built. What im wanting to know is will this be secure? Can use the comapnys server to host the site, and in a sense not put the website online so that just the computers on the server can access the website? Will this be secure?

I would like to upload my site by simply using ftp and transferring the contents of the project directory so that the site will be easy for me to make future updates. Where can I find directions for uploading a ASP.NET site via ftp? I am assuming that I will need to edit the connection string in the web.config file. However, my hosting company told me to just make a full backup of of the database into .BAK file format and upload it via FTP to your the "private" folder. Anyone have any experience with something like this and can tell me how this would affect the connection string? Can I back up the database to a .BAK file from within Visual Studio 2008 or do I have to use Management Studio? I am using Visual Studio 2008 with ASP.NET 3.5, C#, and SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.

I'm creating a website and I'm testing resgistering and Log-in.
I followed a simple tutorial to create a Log-in in Visual Studio C# template which generated a SQL Server database.Locally the Log-in and registration page works perfectly. The problem is that when I upload my site to the hosting site the navigation works but the Log-in and Registration forms send an error when clicked "Register" or "Log-in". I contacted the site and they upload my database the way it should be because I was doing it wrong. I can see all my files including the data base.
They commented me that I had to do a connection string to the data base so the login and registration forms can work. I don't understand how to do that, I know the connection string has to be declared in the Web Config File, the thing is that I don't know how to write that code and link it to my data base in the hosting site, in fact I have sample code but I don't know just what do I need to put in it.
Is it true that ASP.NET and IIS hosting is more more expensive that PHP and Apache? Say I want to host a dedicated server, then will the difference be that big?
- Another thing, do I really need a license for SQL Server database and IIS or something like that when I pay for a company for the dedicated server or they will pay that?
I'm working on a site that will offer a free service. It's a very simple site: A visitor will choose some text files from their PC, and once he has finished choosing them, he will click on the "Submit" button. This "Submit" button will simply upload the text files to X folder on the server and run a 3rd-party executable that will process these files. That's it. The exe will be doing all the work and creating a new file that the user will be downloading. This is the problem: I've found out the hard way that shared hosting plans don't allow executables on their servers. So it's been suggested that I purchase a VPS or dedicated server plan for this, but the cheapest one I found is $39/mo.
Although my site will have a "premium" service, it's mostly free, and I wasn't expecting to spend too much on hosting. As a matter of fact, I was planning on using my current shared plan for this. My question is: is there any other way of being able to do this? It would need to be automated; being free, tons of people (hopefully) will go to the site, start uploading text files, and wait for the result. I could do it manually (download the text files from the server, run the EXE locally, and finally upload the result and email the user), but that's almost impossible.

I have installed SQL Server 2008 Express Advance Services Edition on server.
I have copied the standard asp.net VS 2O10 from simplest template (the one with login link and 2 tabs home and about) under the root directory of the server. The website works until I try to login then I get:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server
I cannot find a single article that just explains step by step how to deploy this simple example used by Microsoft or can I ? Then can you point me to this tutorial thanks.

On Web Site 1, I have to provide controls to enter user id and password and which have to be validated on Web Site 2 on server B, after validating them I have to redirect the user to Web site 2.

Note: On Web Site 2, user login functionality is already existing and it is provided by ASP.Net login control, am not sure how to handle the user login process from two different places.

View 1 RepliesUsing Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.
Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release. Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?
I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit
User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.
This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?
