Displaying Navigation Properties On A GridView Using EntityDataSource?

Apr 4, 2011

I have an EntityDataSource I've mapped to the entity Resident which includes two navigation properties (Building1, Room1). I've set my GridView to use this EntityDataSource and set the EntityDataSource Include property to Building1, Room1 so it includes these navigation properties and have added these columns to the GridView. When I run the application instead of displaying the associated navigation property it shows this: webHousingAdmin.BuildingHow can I get it to display the actual value? Code looks like this for GridView:

<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="lbl1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Building1") %>' />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>

I've gotten it to display the actual value by using the following code:

<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Building">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="lblBuilding" Text='<%# Bind("Building1.building_name") %>' runat="server" />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>

But is there a simpler way to do this? This only displays the text, doesn't let me edit it...if I can do it as a boundfield that would be ideal.

EF1 Navigation Properties Not Working?

Nov 17, 2010

My entity model was generated from the existing database. There is a many-to-many junction table picked up and hidden by EF.

The relationship is definitely working because this query returns 2 users as expected.

public IQueryable<User> FindUsersByGroupID(int group_id)
{
return db.Users.Where(u => u.Groups.Any(g => g.Group_ID == group_id));
}

But when locating a user that is part of the above result set the Groups navigation property count is 0. I shouldn't have to explicitly join.. right?

public User FindUserByID(int id)
{
return db.Users.First(u => u.User_ID == id);
}

Implementing Navigation Properties In Entity Framework?

Oct 1, 2010

I've been learning MVC 2 and I have pretty much everything understood except for the model part of things, I understand what the model is but actually implementing it has me confused.

Here's my situation, I have my DB which has 3 tables;

Ideas - table of ideas
Tags - table of tags
IdeaTag - link table connecting the above 2 tables via FKs

So when using the Entity Framework (.edmx) designer in VS2010 I get 2 classes created in the Designer, which obviously map to my DB tables and Navigation Properties in Idea for Tags & Idea for Tag.

So this is all fine until I actually try to add tags to an idea, what's the best practise for dealing with Navigation Properties? I wanted to add a Textbox which will then map to the Tags property in the Idea class but I'm unsure how I'd go about this.

Most of the MVC tutorials which discuss EF or Linq to SQL are quite basic.

MVC :: Displaying Contents To Right Side Of Left Navigation Bar

Mar 21, 2011

My master page is left navigation bar. It displays correctly on my aspx pages, but the other content of the aspx page is displayed right underneath the master page content. I don't want anything to be displayed under the left navigation bar. I want the other stuff to be displayed on the right side of the navigation bar. Is their any way I can do that. below is my code

<%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/NavigationMenu.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<dynamic>" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="CIS_NG.Models.Menu" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="titleContent" runat="server">
</asp:Content>
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server" >
<h2>Welcome to CS page</h2>
</div>
</asp:Content>

i want the "welcome to Cs page" displayed right next to my left navigation bar that is coming from my master page. I can do this to avoid it

<div style="text-align: center;"><h2>Welcome to CS-NG</h2>

but I thought if I write somthing in the content page, it will automatically come to right side of the page.

Columns Of Two Related Database Tables In One GridView With EntityDataSource

Feb 17, 2010

I have two SQL Server tables with Primary Keys (PK) and a Foreign Key (FK) linking the two tables:

1) Table "Order"

OrderID, int, PK
AddressID, int, FK
...

2) Table "Address"

AddressID, int, PK
City, nvarchar(50)
...

Then I've created an (ADO.NET) Entity Data Model out of those two tables. Now on my (ASP.NET) webpage I put a GridView with an EntityDataSource. In my GridView I want to display two columns:

OrderID City (belonging to that order and linked by the AddressID-key) How can I do that? My problem is: When I configure the Entity Data Source I can select an "EntitySetName" which can be either "Order" or "Address" but not both, nor can I select any kind of relationship. If I select "Order" as EntitySetName
then in the GridView I can add the columns

OrderID
Address
Address.AddressID

Adding the column "Address" displays empty cells. Adding "OrderID" and "Address.AddressID" displays the expected IDs. But how can I add the "City" of the related address to my GridView? Edit: Clarification:

The Entity Framework has created a class "Order" and a class "Address" corresponding to the database tables. The class "Order" has a reference to an "Address" object as a navigation property, corresponding to the 1-n relationship between Address and Order table. Basically I want to have a column in my GridView which displays Order.Address.City. I have tried to add a bound field with "Address.City" as data field to the GridView but it results in a runtime error ("no such property...").

Forms Data Controls :: How To Show Data From A Related Table In A Gridview / Entitydatasource

Feb 23, 2011

I am using an ADO Entity Model for my ms-sql database.

My database has a Resellers table which has ResellerID (primary key, int) and Name columns along with other data.

I also have an Orders table which contains OrderID (primary key, int), OrderDate, ResellerID (foreign key to Resellers.ReselerID).

If I just do a query like:

[Code]....

I am able to reference order.Reseller.Name just fine with no problems.

However I have an EntityDataSource on my page as follows:

[Code]....

Notice the Include="Reseller" attribute in the datasource... I also have a GridView tied to that datasource as follows: I cut some of it off for breavity:

[Code]....

Now what I have listed above will run with no errors, but what I want to do is replace the column that displays "ResellerID" with the equivilant to order.Reseller.Name. In other words I want my grid to display the reseller's name rather than the numeric ID.

I have tried to change the DataField to "Reseller.Name" but that will generate the following error:

A field or property with the name 'Reseller.Name' was not found on the selected data source.

Is there anyway to do this without me writing a custom select statement in my code behind?

Forms Data Controls :: How To Access The Properties Of The Inner Gridview Of A Nested Gridview

I have a nested gridview which has been working fine. Now I need to turn the inner gridview off based on some condition: a IF block is added to the existing RowDataBound event of the outer gridview. Now I'm getting "the Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. What should be the proper way to go about this? The code:

In addition, is there a way to "switch" columns of the inner gridview? For example, column 1 is "City", column 2 is "Price". If user selects to sort by "Price", I woud like column 1 be "Price" and column 2 be "City". Is this has to be done programmatically or if there's other way?

C# GridView.ShowHeader And Other Properties?

Feb 24, 2010

I am using an ASP.NET GridView control, created dynamically with C# on a SharePoint web part. I am having some troubles setting the properties. Specifically, the ShowHeader property seems to be completely ignored, and it is set like so:

gv.ShowHeader = false;

This seems to work fine with the System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGrid, which I had previously used. I'm also having this issue with many of the other properties, such as BorderColor, BorderWidth, etc. However, CellPadding and CellSpacing work just fine when set similarly:

gv.CellPadding = 2;
gv.CellSpacing = 2;

I don't understand where the problem is. Here is the DataGrid code I had been using, which worked fine:

SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter();
da.SelectCommand = cmd;
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
da.Fill(ds, "Specs");
DataSet flipped_ds = FlipDataSet(ds);
