Disposing An Object After A (possibly Redirected) Request?

Jul 20, 2010

I have a CustomRequestContext object that has to be disposed after each request. I create it in Page_Load and dispose of it in Page_Unload. The only issue is that in certain circumstances I need to call Server.Transfer to redirect to another aspx page instead. In this case, the object should not be unloaded until the new page is ready to be unloaded. What is the nicest way of achieving this?

Login Page Cannot Load An Image Because The Request Is Redirected?

Nov 30, 2010

I had a website project which worked fine. I have converted it into a web application project in VS 2010. Now when I start the project from VS my login page is never loaded because when it tries to load images, scripts, css all the requests are redirected back to login page.

However if I setup a website under my local IIS to use the folder where the project is the website works no problem.

I have created a test web app to play with. And it does pretty much the same. Login page cannot load an image because the request is redirected. Here is what I've got.

web.config

<configuration>
<system.web>
<compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0" />
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ASPXAUTH" loginUrl="~/login1.aspx" defaultUrl="~/default.aspx" slidingExpiration="true"/>
</authentication>

<deny users="?"/>
</authorization>
<trace enabled="true" pageOutput="true" requestLimit="150" mostRecent="false" />
</system.web>
<location path="trace.axd">

<authorization>
<allow users="*"/>
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<system.webServer>
<modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"/>
</system.webServer>
</configuration>
login1.aspx

Create First Family Site With MVC And Possibly NVelocity?

Jan 22, 2010

I am an experienced .NET developer with approximately 5 years of experience. Unfortunately, I have worked primarily on the back-end and as an desktop/smartclient developer. I have worked as a consultant for a total of 1 1/2 years on web development using both the MVP pattern and some Silverlight. I am wanting to develop a personal site, (My wife is due with our first in 7 months!) and figured while I was at it I would target particular technologies that I want to learn. Being that my current employer
uses Monorail with NVolocity and is plannning a migration to ASP.NET MVC with (most-likely) NVelocity, I figured that would be a good tech stack to use. In addition, I would like to add JQuery to the set-up.

I have done several ASP.NET MVC tutorials. Including one on this site (Great job!). However, adding NVelocity and JQuery to the mix muddies the water a bit for me.

So, my question is, does anybody have advice of where to start? Do you know of any good books, online tutorials, etc.? Do you think this is a good stack to use? Better view engine?

DataSource Controls :: Join Across Two Databases On (possibly) Different Servers

Feb 12, 2010

I would like to create a gridview where all of the items in one table are listed and a checkbox is checked if that item also shows up in another table. The difficulty comes in the fact that table are not only in different databases, but possibly on different servers.

Is there any way to do this via ASP.NET connection strings, so that it doesn't matter where the databases live? I'd rather use connection strings, because I don't want to hard-code credentials into the queries (OPENROWSET or whatnot).

Disposing Objects In .net?

Nov 27, 2010

What is the best practice on disposing objects in a .net method? I tend to avoid try/catch blocks as much as possible, so lets say I have a method in vb.net code behind that instantiates an object (The object may be a local variable or a class variable).Should I call objectName.dispose() when I am done with it?I am keeping in mind that I should aquire the object late and release it early during that method execution.

AJAX :: Disposing Drag/drop Objects On Postback?

Mar 31, 2010

I have an UpdatePanel that contains several "items" that are in individual divs that are registered as dragdrop objects. I pass the item ID into the object. Everything appears to be working fine until I delete an item/div. The items appear in the correct divs but the ID's are mismatched as if the delete never happened. I know the dispose method is being called for each object. But I don't know how the deleted item ID is still being passed in a drag/drop object that should be re-initialized on every pageLoad. It's difficult to explain but here is some of the relevant code:

Example of generated initializations on postback:

Get Application Root From Request Object That Works Locally And Remotely?

Mar 15, 2011

Let's say that I have my ASP.NET web application in a directory called "MyApp" both locally and on a remote server. I'm trying to build an onclick response to a link. The response calls a Javascript function, passing it the URL of an .aspx page in my web app. The Javascript pops out a new window displaying the page. My C# code looks like this:

link = new HyperLink();
link.Text = product_num_str;
link.NavigateUrl = "#";[code]....

I started using the Request's Authority property because I was having problems running locally on the Visual Studio web server when I used the Host property. The problem was that Host only returned "localhost" instead of the host and port number. When tested locally, the code works because the "authority" maps to my app root folder. The URL generated is, e.g.,

http://localhost:52071/ProductInfo.aspx?_num=123

If I run on a remote server, however, I end up with something like: http://company-server/ProductInfo.aspx?_num=123

This fails to find the page, because in this case the "MyApp" root folder must be included.There is probably an easier way - putting an entry in the web.config or something. My motivation originally was to allow the app to be published to a folder of any name and work as is. I could hack my approach and search the string for "localhost" or something, but that's ugly. So how do I build a string that will work everywhere?

C# - Leaving A BinaryReader Object Un-disposed In Order To Keep Request.InputStream Alive?

Feb 1, 2011

I have a couple methods to handle the saving of an image using Request.InputStream. I have two extensions that share the HttpContext. In one of my methods, I'm using a BinaryReader to read in the contents and do the processing. However, naturally, when disposing the BinaryReader, it closes off the InputStream property on Request. My SECOND method uses the same input stream to create a thumbnail.

Bascially, I need a way to keep the Request.InputStream property alive after disposing the reader in the first method. Is this possible? Here are my two methods. SaveImageStream() is called first, then GenerateThumbnail().

Accessing To Request Object Will Lead To ReadEntityBody To Return 0 (in A HttpHandler Class)?

Dec 25, 2010

I created a httpHandler that successfully implements IHttpHandler for handling file uploads. It works perfectly fine. You send the file with the form, the class receives it and will save it to hard disk. It reads chunks of file with ReadEntityBody function of HttpWorkerRequest class.

Here is the situation i'm faced with.If at any stage before trying to read the file with ReadEntityBody, I try to access Request object (even Request.InputStream.Length!) ReadEntityBody would return 0 means it won't read from file stream.

After further testing I found out the reason behind it. Accessing to Context.Current.Request object will trigger some sort of functionality that will cause asp.net to handle file uploads at that moment by it's own! I believe this is a bug.

for example exactly after this line of code, asp.net will upload the file completely, and so there will be no stream for ReadEntityBody to read from later.

int FileSize = context.Request.InputStream.Length;

C# - Get Redirected Url From Code

Apr 24, 2010

I'm using an API which, given a url, redirects to a file on the server. The file names have "_s,_m and _l" appended to the end (small, medium, large). However, since the url's querystring is parsed dynamically, I don't retrieve the actual file name. The image displays correctly, but is it possible to retrieve the filename of the image file from the code? (i.e. where the url has redirected to)?

e.g. http://api.somesite.com/getimage?small (this is what I enter) "http://somesite.com/images/userimage_s.png" (this is where it redirects to. I would like to get this address from code)
