Edit And Continue Does Not Work In VS 2010 / MVC 2
May 28, 2010
Although Enable Edit and Continue is checked on the Web tab of my ASP.Net MVC 2 project, I cannot in fact change the source code while running. For example, if I try to edit a controller while paused in the debugger, I cannot change the file (acts as if read only).
I found a related post Edit and continue in ASP.NET web projects, however
The answers seem to suggest I should be able to at least edit the code, then reload the page to see the result.I don't know what the distinction is between a Web Application and Web Site projects

I check edit and continue in Web application properties, still have to stop the debugger!!, re-attach to the project.
If Web application cannot be edited while debugger is attached is there an easy way to convert it to web site, given that the application is on live server, and I am newly introduced to it.

i was able to get it to work, but i think there is a problem havingtwo different datareaders whiles within another. after moving it outof the outer while in a method it works. The Exception from the 1st update was because i didn't closed the reader, so it opened too many tables an JET crashed on the 2048 open tables. So but i'm not very pleased with the result, but at least the data comes out

I am developing a intranet site and want to track the users, I am using session for this purpose, I am using windows authentication mode so there is no login form here. When a user clicks the url for the first time a new session is created and at that time I am adding a entry in a table(say :Users) with username and logintime and sessionid etc. Below is the logic Iam using in form_load event of Default.aspx
If session("user") is nothing then
---create new session (at this point I am adding a entry in table(users))
Else --- use the same session and continue the work.
End if
When I check the users info in the table some entries are created with same userid and same sessionids with different login time, how this is possible. I just want to know who is logged in and what time.

I have a DataView that is bound to a DataSource, which gets its data from a SQL database.I'm converting a desktop app to a web app and I've been able to duplicate the data query side, but I'm having a hard time inserting a new record via the data source. In the desktop app, I don't use a data source. I have a class I created that inserts a new record, but the upkeep is extremely time consuming, so I'm switching to the datasource.When I assign the datasource, I selected the SQL statement/stored procedure option and created my INSERT command via the Query Builder.
The problem I'm running into is that I don't want a SELECT statement. I just want a plain GridView so I can select Edit, fill in the data and then call InsertParameters.If I don't add a SELECT statement, it won't let me finish the wizard and an invalid one throws an exception. The only other thing I could think of, was to call SELECT and set a WHERE based on a column whose value is null. The app runs, but the GridView doesn't appear. How I can only do an INSERT?

I am in need of a very simple grid which the user should be able to edit very quickly. The grid will display a list of food items (name and price) that make up a menu.
My usual approach here is just a GridView bound to a collection of the food items with an Edit button to the left of every row. When the Edit button is clicked I navigate to an Edit page where the user can edit that item and click OK to save it to the database and then go back to the grid page, where the grid is reloaded and shows the edited item.
This approach however is much to slow, the user should be able to edit the grid much more quickly, ideally without posting back (either fully, partially or via ajax).
What I'm thinking is really simple, but I don't have the necessary javascript skill to create this...:
A UserControl that simply creates a new row of TextBoxes for every food item (along with maybe a Delete button). The 'grid' is thus always in 'edit mode' (it always shows the textboxes in every row) and the user can type in any textbox to change the name or price. When this change is made, nothing happens server side, yet. When the user presses Save, I finally run a save method that just checks all rows and saves the new values to the database.
Since the grid is so simple (just Name and Price and the underlying data has a unique Id as well obviously) I think this should be possible, but I wouldn't know how to create this...
I did try, I had a UserControl 'MenuGrid' that was nothing but a PlaceHolder (and two labels for the 'Name' and 'Price' menu headers). It has a DataSource property that I set to a collection of food items in the menu, and then for each of those food items I add a MenuGridRow (another UserControl) to the Placeholder. This MenuGridRow contains two TextBoxes and the Delete button. It also contains a HiddenField control that gets the Id of the food item.
Loading works fine, I can get all the data in this 'grid', but I don't see any way to save it back. Once I changed the items and want to Save on the server, I don't see any way to access the MenuGridRows from the MenuGrid (let alone accessing the TextBoxes on that in turn). I think the problem is that it's all just rendered to html and during runtime there is no such thing as a MenuGrid or MenuGridRow anymore. So all I have is a couple of TextBoxes with seemingly random names and there's no way for me to determine which Textbox belongs to which HiddenField (which contains the Id).
Also, I don't see any way to handle the deleting of a row; I was thinking to just run some javascript that deletes the MenuGridRow from the MenuGrid, but again same problem, there's no such thing as a MenuGridRow at that point and I'd have to figure out which TextBoxes and HiddenField belong to that row and then delete them via javascript.
I tried looking for an editable ajax enabled grid as well, so I don't have to do it all by myself, but I didn't really find anything useful. Most of the grids I found don't even work properly, some work but are still very slow (there's still a postback, they just put the grid in an UpdatePanel but that doesn't make it any faster).

I got a IList<Category> where a Category have an id, name and parentid. Right now I loop over all categories where the parent id is 0 (so they are root) and for each of those child categories I call a recursive function that add the child categories to the child nodes. Works fine. However, I (think) I'm going to do away with the asp:treeview since now, next to each Category I want an Edit and Delete Link.

I'm trying to update items in my SQL database from a ListView. It works, but all entries in the database update. Not just the one I'm working on. I backed up the database prior to testing, so there's not any issues there.This is how my SqlDataSource UPDATE command is setup:
SQL Code:
UPDATE entries SET duration = @duration, checkinDate = @checkinDate, receivedBy = @receivedBy, cosmeticDmgIn = @cosmeticDmgIn, STATUS = N'closed'
I don't have any code setup to update the database, which is probably the issue.When I load the ListView, select edit, type in my edits, and click "Update", all the rows in my database, for that column, are updated with that data.I tried inserting the parameters manually, within the ItemUpdating event, but it never works.

I have a gridView that is populated with a dataset from an Oracle Database.
When I click on the EDIT button, it will redisplay my gridView with textboxes so I may make some changes.
Let's say one row is currently:
OPEN_TIME = 1 CLOSE_TIME = 2
When I click EDIT, 1 and 2 are in a textbox. If I change both values to 5 and click UPDATE, it will fire a RowUpdating..
Here is the code from my APP:
Private Sub gvBusinessHours_RowUpdating(sender As Object, e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewUpdateEventArgs) Handles gvBusinessHours.RowUpdating
Dim strOpenTime As String = DirectCast(gvBusinessHours.Rows(e.RowIndex).FindControl("txtOpenTime"), TextBox).Text
Dim strCloseTime As String = DirectCast(gvBusinessHours.Rows(e.RowIndex).FindControl("txtCloseTime"), TextBox).Text
End Sub
The problem is the values I am getting are the OLD ones and not the new ones... I am getting 1 and 2 and not 5 AND 5...
what I am doing wrong ?

In my gridview, when in non-edit mode, my edit (pencil) and delete (X) buttons show up side-by-side as expected:
Attachment 130089
However, when I click the edit button (pencil) to go into edit mode, the update (diskette) and cancel (undo arrow) appear as shown below, and the edit and delete buttons of the other rows appear the same "wrong" way as well.
Attachment 130091
Here is the code for the grid:
Code:
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" GridLines="None">
<AlternatingRowStyle BackColor="#F7F4ED" />
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="Fname" HeaderText="First Name" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Lname" HeaderText="Last Name" />

Whenever I add an entry to the Hosts file on Windows, it takes a long time for the change to take place? I have tested using Firefox and IE and it seems to take around 5 minutes on both of them before the new IP/Domain entry on Hosts is recognised.
Is there anything I can do to overcome this? Perhaps "refreshing" the cache in some way? ipconfig /flushdns doesn't work.

I am using VWD 2010 and building a site on the 3.5 framework. It's a simple site for a school club, and we need user profiles for membership information. I have been looking at This MSDN page about how to go about it. This is my current Web.config:
Code:
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Account/Login.aspx" timeout="2880"/>
</authentication>
<membership>
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" connectionStringName="ApplicationServices" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" requiresUniqueEmail="false" maxInvalidPasswordAttempts="5" minRequiredPasswordLength="6" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" passwordAttemptWindow="10" applicationName="/"/>
</providers>
</membership>
<profile enabled="true" defaultProvider="AspNetSqlProfileProvider">
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="AspNetSqlProfileProvider" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider" connectionStringName="ApplicationServices" applicationName="/"/>
</providers>
<properties>
<add name="Name" type="String" serializeAs="String"/>
<add name="Address" type="String" serializeAs="String"/>
</properties>
</profile>
<roleManager enabled="true">
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider" connectionStringName="ApplicationServices" applicationName="/"/>
<add name="AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.WindowsTokenRoleProvider" applicationName="/"/>
</providers>
</roleManager>
It is more or less out of the box currently. The issue I am having is that if I try to access say, Profile.Name, I get the error that "Name" is not a member of "Profile". I have had this working before in another site, but this one is getting the better of me.what I may need to do to get this functioning properly?

If have a folder (say "binaries") and place all the 3rd party dll's you are going to use in there. When you reference the dll in your project, what is the use of setting "Copy Local"?If you dont set Copy Local, does your code reference the dll in that folder and the folder have to be deployed with your application?
I just had another "something new" and that was a dll just have to be present apparently in the web project's bin folder.The "easy way" suggested was adding a post build like this:
Quote:xcopy "$(SolutionDir)binaries/*.dll" "$(ProjectDir)bin" /y
xcopy "$(SolutionDir)hibernate.cfg.xml" "$(ProjectDir)bin" /y
xcopy "$(SolutionDir)Log4Net.config" "$(ProjectDir)bin" /y
all that dll's get copied over, and I dont even know what is really required.Btw, I noticed with the above script that say "NHibernate.dll" get copied over, but "NHibernate.Caches.SysCache.dll" not.
