Forms Data Controls :: FormView SQL Errors Do Not Throw Exceptions?
Aug 20, 2010
I have been experiencing instances where a FormView update or insert event fails and should throw an exception, but doesn't. This seems top be related to my switch to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and .Net 4.0. Since the switch I have seen this problem several times. Is there something new in .Net or VS that I need to do or set to get the exceptions thrown? Other exceptions seem to work fine...it's just with FormView and SQLDataSource that I don't see them.The specific errors I don't see reported include misspelling a field name in the Select, Insert or Update commands in the SqlDataSource.

There used to be an article at ELMAHs docs site that contained this information, but it seems to have been removed. I think it's as simple as setting a configuration setting in the section, but I haven't a clue what it isCan anyone take a few seconds and drop the configuration setting here?

I really want to switch over to ajax, but i can't seem to get my error handlling perfect. If i can't handle errors correctly, I just can't use it. What I really want to happen is to do a full refresh of the Top Frame. How I normally do this is by a similar call to Response.Write(<script>top.location.href = ""</script>). I was currently doing this in Global.asax. This becomes a problem when I error out in an AJAX postback. I've also noticed that There is an AsycPostbackErrorHandler you can attach to the ScriptManager. This is all find an dandy, but it will still hit my Global.asax Application_Error Event.
I am honestly just not sure how to handle this.
As I said, the result I want is....To Reload the Top Frame with some Error Message...whether I have to do some weird redirection or whatever. My problem lies specifically with the Global.asax file.

I have custom errors set in the web config file as follows:
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericError.aspx" />
Fine and dandy... I like that mode="RemoteOnly" facilitates development...
For unhandled exceptions, I have in global.asax:
Sub Application_Error(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Response.Redirect("GenericError.aspx")
End Sub
However, unhandled exceptions are going to the generic error page instead of the informative yellow screen of death preferred by developers. I can comment out the redirect in global.asax, but then I need to remember to change it for the production environment. Is there a way I can check in Application_Error whether I am remote or not to determine whether to redirect?

I'm trying to throw the exception back to Page_Load but the throw statement causes error: ArgumentNullException was unhandled by user code. How can that be fixed? Also, I can't see Label1.Text displayed on the page after the ArgumentNullException occurs because the page is not re-load. If there is no exception, it's fine to not reload the page. How can I see the Label1.Text displayed?
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
try
{
...do something here...
}
catch (ArgumentNullException ae)
{
System.Diagnostics.Debug.Write(ae.Message);
Label1.Text = ae.Message;
Label1.Style.Add("visibility", "visible");
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
...do something here...
}
}
protected void ImageButton1_Click(object sender, ImageClickEventArgs e)............................

I would like to ask if it is possible to access data on a master FormView from a nested detail FormView.
I have a main form (master) with several tabs (detail) and would like to display a label with text from main form that is hidden by the tab at the moment of editting. My asp page looks like this.
[Code]....
Is it possible to get the value of the label CompanyTextLabel from CompanyTextBox using just ASP.NET expressions or something similar without writing c# code in .cs file?

Trying to use a dropdownlist to query a database so that it will return all values except 1 (or more in future versions).
For example, assume you had a simple table name "MYFRIENDS" which has two fields named "GROUP" and "NAME" with the following records:
Group
Name
A
John
B
Jane
C
Tony
D
Sue
What I want to do is create a DropDownList that has only 2 list items related to the "GROUP" field. The first list item should return records from the database related to Group A only. Then, the second list item should return all other records EXCLUDING those belonging to Group A.
The drop down list should look something like this (I've put a question mark where I don't know what to do):
[Code]....
After the selection is chosen in the above drop down list, it should query the database and return the desired result. I'm using an AccessDataSource with select parameters. Here's a sample of what that looks like:
[Code]....
Things I've tried that didn't work:
I tried using "Not A" as the the 2nd list item's value. I was thinking p1 would be replaced with the value "Not A" and the query would read "WHERE GROUP LIKE Not A". But, the query syntax "Like Not" is technically wrong. I tried changing the Where Clause to "WHERE GROUP p1" and then replaced the list item's value to "LIKE A" and the second to "NOT LIKE A". Again, I was thinking p1 would be replaced to read "WHERE GROUP LIKE A" and "WHERE GROUP NOT LIKE A". I also tried changing the "SelectCommand" itself so that after the dropdownlist changed, it would first change the selectcommand first and then run the query.
Why the first 2 items didn't work became somewhat obvious to me after thinking about it for a little while. However, I would think the 3rd one would/should work... as long as you have the sequence of events correct which up to this point I haven't been able to figure out.

I'm building the standard 3-tier ASP.NET web application but I'm struggling as to where to do certain things - specifically handling exceptions.
I've tried to have a look around on the web for some examples but can't find any which go as far as a whole project showing how everything links together.
In my data-tier I'm connecting to SQL Server and doing some stuff. I know I need to catch exceptions that could be raised as a result but I'm not sure where to do it.
From what I've read I should be doing it in the UI tier but in that case I'm not sure how to ensure that the connection to the database is closed. Is anyone able to clarify how to do this? Also if anyone knows as to where I could find an example 3-tier web application that follows best practices that would be great too.

I have a page with a FormView on it. The page is strictly for adding records to a Table. I have the FormView bound to an EntityDataSource and everything works greate except for one thing.
I want to initialize a date field in the FormView to today's date. So, in my page_load event I have:
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
//Initialize SetupDate to today.
TextBox setupdate = (TextBox)fvJob.FindControl("txtSetupDate");
setupdate.Text = DateTime.Now.ToShortDateString();
}
The first time this page loads, the txtSetupDate field is initialized.
Although, and subsequent loads of the page doesn't initialize the Text Box. I step through the code in the debugger and I can see that the code is executig, but something (the FormView bind?) is "clearing" the Text Box.

We have a asp.net application and want to implement logging. The first idea was to use the Application_Error method in the global.asax file.
The problem is that ASP.NET very often seem to throw exceptions internally that are not caused by the application and which seem not to interfer with the users normal workflow. For example we often get HTTPExceptions, UnauthorizedAccessExceptions and others caught in this method, although there is no real error in the application.

I have a dashboard type page that was working fine. I create a new page to test some different controls. Now none of my pages work.Errors are happening on controls that were not touched. I have tried removing things, commenting entire sections but each time I do I get a different error in a different section. I have installed nothing new. The latest is:
BC30456: 'CreateResourceBasedLiteralControl' is not a member of 'ASP.frametest_aspx'.
BorderStyle="Outset" ScrollBars="Both" Font-Size="Smaller" Line 145: ForeColor="Black" Font-Names="Georgia"> Line 146: <asp:TabPanel runat="server" HeaderText="WorkloadStats" ForeColor="Red" Font-Names="Georgia"> Line 147: <HeaderTemplate> Line 148: WorkloadStats

I have problem with Dynamic Controls in my Wizard Steps. In one of my Steps, I create a set of text boxes and checkboxes based on values from an XML document. Now, I initialise my dynamic controls using the OnInit method of the page, but at this stage there is no xml document until that step is reached, and of course I get null exception. How do I set my dynamic controls so it doesn't throw an null exception and be able to load any xml document when that step is reached?

I figured I'd post here while I'm scouring the internet for a solution to my problem.
This code works:
[Code]....
My DataAccess method just uses the SQL statement and returns a dataset. If I comment out the repeater DataSource and DataBind lines, it will build successfully. And I know the dataTable has the information I want because I was able to step through and see it. If I leave in the DataSource and DataBind lines, I'm not even able to step through. I have no errors and no warnings, just build failed.
*EDIT* I apologize for the ugliness of this post, I don't know what happened. I changed the repeater to a DataGrid, and still got the Build Error without any errors. I went on anyway, came back, and now everything works fine. A little bug must've crawled in while I wasn't looking.

For a Table A defined in the DB like this:
A :{ id, selfId, name,} where selfId is a foreign key refered to Table A itself.
I generated the Entity automatically like this:
A :{ string id; A self; string name,} when i update the entity in gridview Edit/Update CommandField
i got the exception:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Source Error:
[Code]....
Stack Trace:
[Code]....
I guess maybe this is caused by:
A is to be updated, and when the EntityDataSource construct the new A, the reference "self" is invalid at that moment. I do not want to modify my DB structure and do not want to lose the self reference, The event EntityDataSource_Updating is not triggered while the exception hit. so i can not access my entity at any time. Maybe the worst idea is deal the whole Update Procedure myself. However, is there any better workaround?

I've got a master page where I've created two content place holders ('menu content place holder' and 'main body content place holder'). I've placed several controls (drop down lists and a calendar) in one of these content place holders (the 'menu content place holder'). In my content page I've set the 'menu content place holder' to 'Default to Master page content'. In my 'main body content place holder' I've included several controls (table, labels) which depend on the user selected items in the 'menu content place holder'.
After including a reference in all the necessary places- like this:
DropDownList ddlList1 = Master.FindControl("ddlList1")
as
DropDownList;
I still get the following exception (this exception occurs in my content page):
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details:System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

i have the following scenario: one formview. when in editmode there is a child formview linked to the other by a column value. i need to take the value of one of the values of parent formview controls and set it to a textbox of child formview in insert mode. I wish to know which event should I use in codebehind to bind both controls? (that escenario will have paging and must keep the binding as if it was master detail)

I am displaying selectable rows in a gridview. The selected row uses a stored procedure to display all the fields in a formview when the Select button is clicked.
Only a small subset of the fields in the selected row are editable. When I click the Edit button only the EditItemTemplate fields show up, the read-only fields from the ItemTemplate disappear. I want the read-only rows to remain visible with the editable rows.
If I include the read-only fields in the EditItemTemplate, I get an error when I click Update on the FormView. The error states that there are too many parameters being passed to the stored procedure to update fields. How can I continue to show the read-only fields with the editable fields on the FormView and avoid getting the input parameter error on the stored procedure for the Update command?

I have a C# web forms ASP.NET 4.0 web application that uses Routing for URLs for some reason custom errors defined in the system.web section of my web.config is entirely ignored and it will fall back the IIS errors.
This gets entirely ignored
[code]....
This would be a minor inconvenience except that by the fact it falls back to IIS native instead of my application it completely circumvents Elmah logging my 404 exceptions correctly.
