Forms Data Controls :: Setting Text Programmatically In ItemTemplate Of Gridview Does Not Show
Mar 7, 2010
The problem is this: I am writing a system to show helptexts on certain labels. So in the PageLoad I recursively iterate all controls and save those with a certain tag. So far so good.
On the PreRenderComplete I iterate the controls and set their text property. The strange this is that the labels in ItemTemplate don't get the new text. The PreRenderComplete fires after the DataBound event of the gridview, the label gets found perfectly, in the end it has the new text, but in the page it's still the old text.
I hope I don't need the Row_Databinding event of the gridview, since I want to put all the functionality in an extender class with as little custom work as possible.

I am trying to programmatically set some lables inside a DetailsView that is populated by an ObjectDataSource. The detailsview is handled in an unusual way with one TemplateField that has one ItemTemplate that has one table that has two rows of significance and a boatload of bound items. I'll be working on the EditTemplate next. But now I need to set the top row lable values programmatically baised on the type of data that comes-up. I have scoured the Internet looking for ideas and found two possible approaches - neither worked. I get the error about something not being set to an instance of the object - or something like that.
Here is the ObjectDataSource:
[Code]....
Here is the DetailsView:
[Code]....
My first approach was to set the OnSelected property to the following code in the code behind, which executes:
[Code]....
My second approach was to delete that OnSelected property and try the following code in the code behind:

I've GridView with Template field as
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Review">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:ImageButton ID="imgBtnReview" ImageUrl="~/images/agt_reload.png" runat="server" Visible="false" CommandName="Review" CommandArgument='<%#Eval("id")%>' />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
Gridview is bound to a table. If a row in table has price greater than zero then the above mentioned Imagebutton should br visible in that row only.
Is it possible to do so.

I've used textbox in ItemTemplate of gridview. I need a confirm box on textChanged event of the respective text box. If user confirms as Ok/Yes then continue with some code else if user clicks on Cancel/No then do some other action.
I've tried using:
Page page = HttpContext.Current.Handler as Page;
ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(page, page.GetType(), "key2", "confirm('Do you want to update?');", true);
But I was not able to achieve desired output.

I'm trying to change the text of a GridView label in an ItemTemplate and I am having some issues. I searched all over and can't find a solution. This is what I am trying to do...
I have a GridView that has a comment field. Normally when the page is rendered the comment field is truncated using a truncate class that limits field length. The full contents can be displayed in a tooltip when the comment field is hovered over. That part works fine.
I also have an export to Excel class that will take the Gridview and export it to Excel and that part works fine as well...
Now the issue... Because of the truncated field, when I do an export it will export exactly what is in that field, the truncated version of a comment. When the export button is clicked I need to change the .text value of the label that is in the GridView ItemTemplate
From this truncated version...
[Code]....
And then back again after the export routine is complete.
I have accessed the contents of a label before using FindControl but never set a value, is this possible? Also, I have captured what is in the comment field on RowDataBound but by that time, it is already truncated.

I have a GridView with two templatefields, one with a DropDownList and the other with a TextBox, both loose their values once I hit the "update" button. Is it any way I can make the controls keep the values?

I have a GridView with an TemplateField:
<asp:GridView runat="server" ID="gvReport" ondatabinding="gvReport_DataBinding">
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField >
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("answers") %>' /> out of <asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("questions") %>' />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField >
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
What I'd like to do on gvReport_DataBinding is change the field the Evals point to, so I end up with something like:
<asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("answers_foo") %>' /> out of <asp:Label runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("questions_foo") %>' />
I have gotten this far:
TemplateField tf = ((TemplateField)gvReport.Columns[0]);
But I'm not sure what I should be doing with tf. tf.SomeProperty.Replace("answers", "answers_foo")?
Or am I barking up the wrong airplane on this one?

I have a GridView (inside an update panel) that has header text that changes based on some user profile information. I set the header text in the Page_Load function of the page - that works fine. The problem is that when I change to the page number of the GridView, the header text is not redrawn. I am handling the OnPageChanging event to try to update the header text but nothing is happening. I've attached the relevant code.

In this case I'm having, the ItemTemplate for various fields in my DetailsView (2 in my case) does not show up, but when you click the edit button, the EditItemTemplate shows up. I played with it, moving it around. No matter where I put it, one of the fields did not show up.
To get even stranger (and don't ask me how I came up with this), if I put a dummy boundfield BEFORE it, the ItemTemplate shows up. But this is totally absurd.
Here's the html:

I have a gridview which takes numbers from the table and shows them. There are 4 numbers (-1 / 0 / 1 / 2)
Since the numbers do not mean anything to the user, I would like to assign them words.
-1 = Bad
0 = OK
1 = Groovy
2 = Superduper
So, I would like the data taken from the table to be changed to the word and that populate the datagrid.
The code behind is in C#

I have a Repeater displaying some data that doesn't do what I'd like to see. If a certain condition is met (ex: parent.NumOfChildren > 0) I would like a hyperlink shown. Here is what I have so far:
<asp:Repeater ID="parents" runat="server" >
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:HyperLink NavigateUrl='<%# "Children.aspx?parent=" + DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem,"Parent_ID")%>'
Text='View Children' runat="server" target="_self" ID="Hyperlink2" NAME="Hyperlink2"/> -
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:Repeater>
In this case, the "View Children" link shows up for every item in my Repeater, but I'd like it shown only if parent.GetNumOfChildren() > 0. Would it be correct to try setting the Visible="true/false" property of the HyperLink? Is that the norm for this sort of problem? Or, is there a way to wrap the entire <asp:Hyperlink> ... </asp:Hyperlink> tag in an if statement that has a reference to the object that is currently being interated in the Repeater? Ie:
if(CurrentDataItemInIteration.GetNumOfChildren() > 0)
{
<asp:Hyperlink> ..... </asp:Hyperlink>
}
To me, the Visible="true/false" solution seems cleaner, if possible.

I have done this with a DropDownList but not 2 text boxes that require date info.
With the DropDownList once a itme is selected from the list the GridView gathers the data in a SQL query and displays it in the same page
I want to have the same type of response when the user enters date data in two text boxes. It would be nice that when they exit the 2nd parameter box to show the grid.
Not sure how to do that in SelectParameters and convert the text data to a date.
I am going to use RequiredFieldValidtors but I am not sure what to do to make sure a valid date is entered.
