Forms Data Controls :: Possible To Output Collections Of Arrays Through Control?
Nov 17, 2010
Using VB.net: I have several collections, each collection has several items and each item has several 1-d arrays (all the same length). Is it possible to print each one of these arrays through an ASP Control?

I have a BLL that takes data from DB into datatables and for each datatable there are functions that transform them into Collections of the corresponding class.
When I put the data in a Collection into GridView through ObjectDataSource I don't have the option to click on the header of a column and get the data sorted. The headers are only clickable when DataTable is passed to the ObjectDataSource.
How can I get arround this problem without passing DataTables to the ODS?

Apparently I am trying to do something that is a little unorthadox here. I am trying to use multiple arrays and bind them to one repeater in C#. I would think that there has to be a reasonably easy way to do this but I can not seem to find it anywhere online. This is what I have so far (that works). How do I bind multiple arrays to this one repeater though?
// Bind Array to Repeater repTest.DataSource = arrTest1; repTest.DataBind();
<form id="formTest" method="post" runat="server">
<asp:Repeater ID="repTest" runat="server"> <HeaderTemplate>
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
</HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <tr height="30px">
<td width="40%"> <%# Container.DataItem %> </td> </tr>
</ItemTemplate> <FooterTemplate> </table> </FooterTemplate>
</asp:Repeater> </form>

1. I know about collections but I dont remember the precess. I know you drag a sqldatasource control on the form(Select everything in the database ie. selct *) and then delete it. But how do I use it i code.
Example. I need to select services where country=canada from the Agencies table.
2. I know how to manually pull data from an access database using the code below. I want to know how to pull data from a sql database just like the one below.
3. explain the difference between Collections and manually pulling it like the one bellow?
<code>
<script>
Stringpath = Server.Mappath = Server. MapPath(/website");
String connStr = Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" +"DataSource="+path+
\Database;
OleDBConnnection conn = new OleDBConnection(connStr);
conn.open();
OleDbCommand cmd= new OleDBCommand();
cmd.COnnection = conn;
cmdCommandText = "Select * From [Suppliers];
OledbDataReader dr= cmd.ExecuteReader();
Response.write(dr.getvalue(1);

I've written a custom control that converts datasources into an IEnumerable and then binds the data. This works fine and I have LoadPostData working after postbacks. I can also using a collection to load it. Like adding listitems to a dropdownlist on an html page. This works fine and I have LoadPostData working after postbacks
[Category("Behavior"),
Description("A collection of CheckBoxItems"),
DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Content),
NotifyParentProperty(true),
PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerDefaultProperty)]
public CheckBoxFieldCollection CheckBoxItems
{....}
Kinda struggling on merging the two. I think when i databind, instead of adding my CheckBoxItem to Controls I think I need to add it to my collection CheckBoxItems and then proced with creating childcontrols. It works the first pass through when I bind to the datasource. When I do a postback my controls collection goes to null. Can anyone point me in which direction to go? Also, after databinding, if I do , MyControl.CheckBoxItems.Add(new CheckBoxItem(..)), the new one doesnt show up.

I'm creating an ASP.NET Control which has a property collection for Columns which the user can edit in the Property Collection Editor..
In most circumstances this works fine, the collection can be edited in the designer and the appropriate tags are added inside the control in the ASPX file.
It works fine when
My control is added to the form
[Code]....
My control is added inside an Update Panel
[Code]....
[Code]....
However, if My control is inside a Content Placeholder which is inside an Update Panel, it fails to work as it should. In this scenario, when the Columns collection is edited in the designer, if you then switch back to Source view, the Columns collection is emptied. I have to save the aspx page before switching back to Source view for the changes to be kept.
[Code]....
how to get around this problem? Is there something I may have missed?
Here's the code for the Control

I've build a custom WebControl, which has the following structure:
<gws:ModalBox ID="ModalBox1" HeaderText="Title" runat="server">
<Contents>
<asp:Label ID="KeywordLabel" AssociatedControlID="KeywordTextBox" runat="server">Keyword: </asp:Label><br />
<asp:TextBox ID="KeywordTextBox" Text="" runat="server" />
[Code]....
However it seems to render properly, it doesn't work anymore if I add some asp.net labels and input controls inside the property (see above asp.net code). I'll get the HttpException:
Unable to find control with id 'KeywordTextBox' that is associated with the Label 'KeywordLabel'.
Somewhat understandable, because the label appears before the textbox in the controlcollection. However, with default asp.net controls it does work, so why doesn't this work? What am I doing wrong? Is it even possible to have two control collections in one control? Should I render it differently?

I am writing an ASP.NET custom control.In my custom control code, I find a PlaceHolder control in the page like so:this.myPlaceholder = Page.FindControl("placeholder1") as PlaceHolder Then, I render the placeholder as the output of the custom control:
protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter output)
if (this.myPlaceholder != null)
this.myPlaceholder.RenderControl(output);
However, this causes the placeholder to be rendered in two places - in the custom control output (good) and in the original location in the page (bad).

Basically, I have a custom templated control with a custom data container class. When a developer adds an instance of my control to a page, they can define the controls in the LayoutTemplate however they like, as follows:
<ml:MyControl id="MyControl1" runat="server">
<LayoutTemplate>
<span><%#Container.ErrorMessage%></span>[code]...
I would like my control to automatically move the "ml_errormessage" (databound content from Container.ErrorMessage - hard coded token in the property) to be a class of its containing element to make it easier for jQuery to use a selector to find the element and dynamically insert the error message client side. More importantly, I would like it moved out of the way so the class name doesn't get replaced by the content and jQuery can find it as many times as it needs to during the page lifecycle. In other words, I would like the output to look like this without the developer changing the input template or resort to using custom controls in the template:
<span id="MyControl1"><span>
<span class="ml_errormessage"></span>
</span></span>
I would like to move the value using the controls collection rather than resorting to string parsing of the output, if possible. However, when I interrogate the collection in an override of OnPreRender, the control in the template looks like this in the debugger:
{System.Web.UI.DataBoundLiteralControl}
System.Web.UI.DataBoundLiteralControl: {System.Web.UI.DataBoundLiteralControl} [code]...
As you can see the "ml_errormessage" value is nowhere to be found. Upon analysis of the DataBind event of the Control class using Reflector, I see that it delegates the binding behavior to each control. In other words, each control handles its own databinding. However, since I have no way of knowing in advance what control types will be in the template, how can this change be done?
Note: an acceptable alternative would be to add a new HtmlGenericControl (span) in the exact spot where the "ml_errormessage" is and add it as a class to this new control.On a side note, is there an easy way to get the control's output to indent for easy reading during debugging?

I have a webpart that outputs a ListView control. Typically, I create a business layer that contains all my db calls, put an ObjectDataSource on the page, and tie the ODS to the BLL, and wire the ListView / GridView to the ODS. I've tried moving that paradigm into a webpart and can get the ListView to work if I use a tableadapter as the datasource. However, I would like to use my ODS / BLL structure. When I run the code, I dont' get any output from the ListView. Here is the code:

I'm trying display data from a sqldatasource but I need to customize fonts, sizes and layouts. What would be the best way to do this. There's not much data only 8 rows and 3 cloums.
It's for a display screen that will show workers how much product they have produced.
I was looking at binding the data to lables and laying out the lables in a table but that process looks intense and streching my knowledge.

I am building a SortedList object for use as the DataSource of a GridView control. The key-value pairs are being built manually with the "key" fields being inserted in already sorted order. The "key" column is invisible with the "value" column the single displayed data item. I set the DataSource property of the gridview to the sortedlist and call the Bind method. The gridview then displays the data in random fashion!

First off, suggest better ways if you want rather than patch up this code. I am just starting this project and it is first time I have tried to code a web site so anything you suggest is very much welcomed. I have spent the last 2 and 1/2 days trying to find workable answers to this but none I have found and tried seem to fit. If needed I can email screens shots or code. I am trying to construct a website that will have the same main theme throughout as far as the header, navbars sitemap, and footer go. Naturally the content will vary from page to page. I want to use a single master page and css stylesheet for this main theme and I will change the content format as needed per page because each page may vary somewhat.
However, about 15 of the pages will all use the same format for their content and this format will differ from the rest of the site but the format of the main theme will stay the same. So I am trying to create a nested master page to use to format the just the content area for all these pages while retaining the main theme for the header, etc.. I believe I should use a separate css file with the nested master page to handle the formatting of the content areas for these 15 pages. I have code that looks like it works when viewed in web developer but design view but does not work when viewd through a browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox). So far I have the following done in web developer.
If it helps the code and screen shots follow. Master Page called "Parent.master". For all theme throughout site Nested Master Page called "Lab.master". For the 15 like pages Primary stylesheet file for main theme called "StylesheetNew.css" For site theme Secondary stylesheet file to syle the 15 like formatted pages. It is called Labmaster.css Labs.apsx file to use as first of the 15 like pages.
Finally screens shots from web developer and browser. Sorry try as I might I could not capture screenshots and put them into this post. The problem is that web developer shows all the area (many lines high) with gray background and with the XXX text that I want to allocate for content in the 15 pages. Yet all the browser show is one line of text o a white background followed by the footer. It looks like the LabStyleSheet works in Web Developer but not in a browser.

I have developed an asp.net application that I developed using visual studio express 2008.
With this application, I have 20 sales items. I can sell 10 of each item each day. Customers can order the items in advance but once an item has more than 10 orders for the day then I can not sell any more of the items for that given day. If a customer tries to order another item after 10 has already been ordered then I must tell them that no further items of that kind are available. So for each day there can be possible 200 orders total (20 items x 10 sales). Customers can order months in advance...
So, my question is what kind of storage device do I use to keep track of this kind of data? Database or application variable or other?

I've got an asp.net application (written in vb.net). I have a results page that spits out some calculations. Ineed to write out that output to MS Word. The catch is, this happens within a folder that is secured (only users that are logged in can generate
the word document).
Here's what I'm using to gen the document. This works ok when running it locally, but not when loaded to GoDaddy hosting.
[Code]....
My code seems works fine locally. However, after loading it to GoDaddy it only works on a non-secured (not subject to ASP Membership), but when trying to use it in a secured folder the page clocks and eventually closes out.

I'm having trouble using entities: I still want to use entities on my "DAL" layer, but in "BLL" layer I want to return not a collection of entities but just a Dataset with all the table I got back from Stored Procedure. How can I do that?
The presention layer don't know anything about entities, if I can get just a dataset from "BLL", it will be very easy to work with it as it was before. Only the DAL and BLL layers will be changing.
P.S.
Does entities support stored procedure that is returning more than one table, I mean more than one entity?! If not, This is another BIG problem Microsoft didn't think about.
I must tell you the truth: I am really disappointed about using Entities. There is no logical support for Stored Procedure and too many problems when you want to have N-Tiers. It is like Microsoft have done only half of the work needed so this will be really usefull.

I have a Button1_Click event that I want to display the first 7 records of a dataset by looping through them and presenting on the page in a Literal Control. All of the database code is working fine because when I use the Response.Write statement below, the first 7 rows are dumped at the page top before the HTML. But, when I replace the Response.Write with the Literal1.Text as shown below, only the last (7th) record is displayed on the page.
Here is the code section in question:
for (int
i = 0; i <= 6; i++)
{
DataRow dr = dt.Rows[i];
string text1 = dr["Question"].ToString();
//Response.Write(text1);
Literal1.Text = text1;

Anyone ever try to print the finished output of a wizard control? That is, after the user fills out all 5 steps of the wizard, the user clicks "print" to print all the data from steps 1-5. Normally, a bit of javascript will do the trick, but each time you go to a new "step" the page is refreshed and controls are added/removed from the page.
So if nametxtbox is in step one, when you click step two the control is removed from the page. If I could just pull the values from steps 1-4 from whereever they are stored (session state?) that would probably be good enough. I could load all the values on one page & run some javascript from there.. Not sure where to go from here..hoping for someone will be able to guide me in the right direction...

I am having a lot of the same issue as this poster did with errors on initializing type.
I am trying to learn linq and am about ready to give up - don't get how this is easier...
I'm trying to do a simple update to product names in the product table based on the manufacturer ID
