Forms Data Controls :: Stop An Update Bind / Database Insert At This Point?
Jan 29, 2011
I'm using SqlDataSource and at the point of adding a record, I've called SqlDataSource_UploadNewsLetter_Inserting. In here, I'm testing a value, and if it's true, I need to stop the insert from taking place. But how can I stop the database insert at this point?

I am *VERY* new to ASP.net. This may seem simple to you all, but I'm really lost. I have a small sized page with three text boxes (part of the InsertItemTemplate) of a formview, and a slightly modified link the system generated to submit the data to be inserted in the database:
[Code]....
If this page is run, it inserts the data into the database fine, clears the form and sits there. I want it to return a simple "Thank you" page in a window of the same size, with a Close Window buttom at the bottom to close the window:
[Code]....
When I set the postbackurl property on the first page, everything appears to work, except the write is never done to the database. If I remove the postback, it works as it did previously.

I have two databases. When I am using MS Visual Web Developer, I can drag the table onto the webpage and it gives me check boxes to Insert, Update, Delete,...When I do the exact thing using the other database, it only has check boxes forpaging, sorting and selection. What is the difference? I seem to have all teh same permissions in both databases.

I'm coding my first VB web application, which allows a user to input an order number and pull up invoice and shipping data linkd to that order number.
I have the first bit down and working, where the existing data in the database is displayed in the GridViews. One of the GridViews is set up to allow data editing, and I have syntax set to make the row editable, but I'm struggling with getting the "Update" link/functionality to work. I want to assign the values in each cell to an object (ie. 'dgInvNumber' for Invoice Number), but everything I've tried (been doing a ton of Google searching for help, but no luck yet) keeps giving me an "Object reference not set
to an instance of an object" error when I click the Update link for the row of data being edited.
At this point, I don't know what syntax to use to get the edited values out of the GridView row and assigned to objects for each cell (I have a total of 10 cells that can be edited in a row).
For background info, the GridView is set up with Bound Fields. I'm using Visual Studio 2005. Alot of places I've looked talk about TextBox controls and using FindControl. Also seen some places talk about DataBoundLiteral Controls. I tried the latter with no luck (still getting error). For TextBox controls, I don't understand how to use that part, since it mentions referencing the TextBox controls declared in the EditItemTemplates of the TemplateField column fields in the GridView control. But I didn't set up anything in the EditItemTemplates (that I know of).

I have an update button in a detailsview. based on certain criteria in the data that is being updated (blank field), I want to stop the update from happening. I tried putting the following code in my UpdateButton: 'check to see if the status is 'complete'
Dim statuscheckbox
As CheckBox =
TryCast(formulationDetailsView.FindControl("FormulationCompleteCheckBox"),
CheckBox)If statuscheckbox.Checked
Then
'check to see if color code has been entered
Dim colorcodetextbox
As TextBox =
TryCast(formulationDetailsView.FindControl("ColorCdTextBox"),
TextBox)If colorcodetextbox.Text =
""
Then
'show a message, the color code has not been entered
MessageBox2.Text = "Please enter Color Code prior to complete"
statuscheckbox.Checked = False
resetformwithoutediting()
End
how to stop this code from proceeding to the update?

I am using Ajax Validator call out extender to validate a web form. The error messages are displayed as expected. But I am able to save the form with data that should not have been entered. For ex: for a number field, I type in "sdsd" and the ajax control displays a pop up displaying the error message "Numbers only allowed"..
but at the same time, I can click on the submit button with the text in the number field... at which time, the web page displays error as I am trying to insert a text in a data type int field. I either have to clear the field on pop up error display or not let the user click submit when ajax validator is active. whats the best way?

I have an puzzling problem. I have a new ASP.NET web application in VS2005 that runs fairly well, but I am having a problem and would like to set a break point to see what is going on. I have compiled the project in Debug mode. I have debug=true set in the web.config. But it appears that the IDE is not attaching to the process at all. Have I overlooked something? I am using the development server and not IIS. This has never been a problem in the past, but is this time.

I have been in the process of updating my code with security methods, and I've been learning this from [URL] (or "Security Guidelines: ASP.NET 2.0"). In the middle of the page under "When Constructing SQL Queries, Use Type Safe SQL Parameters" it says "Use type safe parameters when constructing SQL queries to avoid possible SQL injection attacks that can occur with unfiltered input". Now, what they suggested was to use code like:
"DataSet userDataset = new DataSet();
SqlDataAdapter myCommand = new SqlDataAdapter(LoginStoredProcedure", connection);
myCommand.SelectCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
myCommand.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add("@au_id", SqlDbType.VarChar, 11);........"
But, I was already using code like:
"var dataSource = (SqlDataSource)form1.FindControl("sqlDataSource5") ;
dataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("someVal", val);"
So now, to use type safe parameters, I decided to include it like:
"var dataSource = (SqlDataSource)form1.FindControl("sqlDataSource5") ;
dataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("@someVal", DbType.Int16, val);
dataSource.UpdateParameters["@someVal"].Size = 1;"
So, that would be how I would modify my current code base to use type safe parameters in sql updating/inserting.
Getting to my actual question, as it was said "Use type safe parameters when constructing SQL queries to avoid possible SQL injection attacks that can occur with unfiltered input". First off, this suggests that this should apply to unfiltered input. Also, in their example they only did this for an ID.
So, what I'd like to know, when it comes to "unfiltered input", does this mean as long as the input is unfiltered I must use type safe parameters, or even filtered input shall have this (just to be sure), like, input that has been ran through a regularexpression check? Shall I do this for all values I insert/update into the database, or just IDs and important things?
The way I see it right now is that it would be a good precaution to just do type safe checks on everything (literally) that updates/inserts into the database just to be extra safe. But, I really am unsure if this is really the best idea, because if I did, would this possibly cause overprocessing of information? Can this cause too much strain on server resources? If my fears serve true, what would be a good suggestion of how I could implement this properly without having to worry about what I said?

I have a ListView where I am trying to implement Updating. My update parameters are not sent to update command correctly. The value sent is the original value and ignores what I type into the EditItemTemplate. Running a trace on my SQL Server verifies this. In this example, I am only trying to modify [dedamt]. What is wrong?

I have a typical gridview/formview master control setup. When I try to update or insert I don't get any errors but it also doesn't work. When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

The update statement works but on the page is a gridview1 where I want
to display the new values.
I have added the below in page code but it still does not bind
the Gridview with new values when after I click UpdateButton in Formview - Only when I refresh the page.
protected void FormView2_ItemUpdated(object sender, FormViewUpdatedEventArgs e)
{
GridView3.DataBind();
ObjectDataSource50.DataBind();
