View 2 RepliesI'm currently trying to implement a controller where you can download files from (more specifically jar-archives). The files are stored on disk and not in database. So far I have come up with this:
public FilePathResult GetFile(String fileName)
{
return File(Path.Combine(Server.MapPath("~/App_Data/Bundles"), fileName), "application/java-archive");
}
Nevermind the lack of error handling and such at this time. The file do get downloaded this way, however it gets the wrong name. Instead of, for example, "sample.jar" the file gets the controller's name, "GetFile", (without extension).
I have subscription to a website where I can login and download files. These files are secured so I cannot download them with a direct link. Is there any way that I login programmatically and download files from http to my server without any user involvement? They do not offer any API or interface to communicate with.
View 2 RepliesHow can I retrieve file information (size of file) before it is uploaded to the webserver?
I would like to create a multi file upload. I have it working in JQuery but I would like to know the size of the files to set a limition by summing up the total the file sizes together.
What is the best way to update a DB on a webserver without shutting down the website that is running on the server?
We want to do things like replacing tables, updating tables and so on, without shutting down the website. One can do everything one wants to by simply opening the webiste on a local instance of visual webdeveloper express (2008 for example). But as soon as the DB is opened in that program, the website looses contact to the database and is effectively down.
Is there another way to access the database wihtout having to shut it down?
Of course one could program such functions viwht asp.net, however, there are so many tasks to be done that it would be tedious to program a new function on an admin website each time. Is there a simple and direct way to change the DB?
how to upload a aspx website project to a webserver.
I have tried to test the website with the LocalHost, and it is working. The project has both aspx and html files linked inbetween. How can I upload the project to a webserver and test it with the URL address.
I've read different posts on both of these issues and maybe I'm just not understanding what needs to be done. Here is my dilimma. I am running Windows Vista with IIS 6 and coding in VS 2010 using .NET 4 for the ASP.NET site. I installed the AjaxControlToolkit.NET4 in VS 2010 with no issues. I even used the TabContainer and had no problems on my machine, at least when debugging. When I publish it out and install on my remote Webserver 2008 with IIS6, I get the following errors:
Webpage error details
Message: ASP.NET Ajax client-side framework failed to load.
[code]....
I can't see the tab container...Likewise My reports (using reportviewer) on local machine are displaying perfectly but on my webserver they are not showing...
i am using amazon s3 service. now i want to show download dialog box in my asp.net application when user come on download page. i am using amazon sdk.
View 1 RepliesI'm about to submit my pad file to multiple sharware sites but the pad file has to have a direct link to the download file and can't link to a download page which is what I would like to do, so I can track the traffic and get the downloader's email before allowing the download. I am running an ASP.NET site in VB. Is there a way to tell the web app to redirect to a specific aspx page when it receives a request for a specific file?

I need to download a .mp3 file from a folder. during download a new blank page should open and after downloading it should close automatically.
View 1 RepliesWe recently migrated applications from one web server to another. Previously they could upload files to the server and if it already existed, it would over write with the new one.
Now I have to manually delete the file from the server so they can upload a new one. If I delete it they can upload a new one and even upload one to overwrite the one they uploaded. But only after I delete the "migrated" one.
All of the security is correct. ASPNET and IIS_WPG have permissions.
Da Code:
If System.IO.File.Exists(UploadLoc + Me.FileUpload_PDF.FileName) Then
System.IO.File.Delete(UploadLoc + Me.FileUpload_PDF.FileName)
End If
Me.FileUpload_PDF.SaveAs(UploadLoc + Me.FileUpload_PDF.FileName)
I get the dreaded "access to the file is denied"
Update: I find if I give "USER" modify rights it works, but that does not seem secure.
Alright, so i have a silverlight application,
it opens a filedialog, gets the selected file, transfers it to asp.net which saves it to the server, but i want to know how to implement a progress bar for it. for big files, and multiple file uploads, i will need to know the progress of the file upload to the server, is this possible?
I have some code in my default.apsx.cs file that all works except one very small but important piece.. I have the same code in c# consoleapp and it works fine on my local machine.
Here is the code...
[code]...
When i try and run it through visual web developer it seems to feel the file doesnt exits so evaluates the if statement to false and moves. on... I havent specified a path and have the file in the same folder as the default.aspx.cs file.
I have this scenario. I have an application running in a webserver (in DMZ). End users upload documents to the webserver. right now all the documents get stored in the webserver itself. I would like to store all the docs in the database server.
What is the best way to store the documents, move it from webserver to db server after they uplocaded or directly upload to the db server ?.
And, if I have to upload directly to the db server could someone help me how to mangae the connection to the db server and credentials..?
I am trying to break a large web.config file into smaller parts. This has been covered a few times on different stack overflow questions (like this or this) which recommend using the configSource or file attributes. The problem is this does not work for the system.webServer section used to configure IIS 7 in integrated mode. This is particularly bad for web.config files that have IIS Rewrite rules which tend to bloat the files.
View 1 RepliesI have requirement to copy or move file from webserver app folder to local file system folder (user selected). How is it possible in ASP.Net.
On my page i have textbox and browse button and user clicks browse button to select folder and there is Copy/Move button and when clicked the files under webserver folder should be move to the user selected folder. The webserver folder path is available to application.
I am downloading file from database using the following code. This code downloads an excel file from the database which has a macro attached to it when it is opened. This macro reads file name of the excel file and uses it for its computation. Everthing works file if user saves the file on his harddisk and then open if but if he directly opens the file from the dialog(by hitting 'Open' button) then file name of the opened excel file comes out be the name of the webform that has the above code and this leads to error in the macro. Is there any option through which i can control the name of the file if user directly opens the file from dialog or the option to disable or remove 'Open' button form the dialog?

In our application, we allow user to upload documents which can be PDF, Doc, XLS, TXT. Uploaded documents will be saved on web server. We need to display link for each document user uploaded and when user click on that link, it should open relevant document. it is expected to have required software to open relevant documents.
To upload document, we use saveAs method of FileUpload control and it works absolutely fine.Now, how to view it?I believe, i need to copy/download file to local user machine and need to open it using Process.Start.For that i need to find user local temp directory. if i put path.GetTempPath(), it gives me web server directory and copy file there.
File.Copy(
sPath + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
Path.GetTempPath() + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
true);
This below code i have used in my aspx page for file download.
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename="" + emailAttachment.FileName + "";");
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream";
Response.OutputStream.Write(emailAttachment.Data, 0, emailAttachment.Data.Length);
Response.End();
This block of code display Download file Dialog for Open or Save the attached file.It's working fine in Mozila Firefox and IE8 but doesn't display Download file Dialog box in IE 7
I have made an application where I am displaying the .pdf , .doc , .docx files. These files are uploading from an Admin Panel.When user place a mouse pointer on download icon provided in front of every file, it shows the complete path where it’s get saved.I want to avoid this path visibility even when user place mouse on download icon and even if it Inspect an element (as most modern browser will have this functionality).
View 1 RepliesI have a simple 'file download' generic handler which sets the response contenttype and headers before sending the file through the same response.
I also have Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.server) set in the global.asax.
As I have noticed from various sources, Internet Explorer doesn't like this no-cache setting and gives an error when trying to download the file (requested site unavailable or cannot be found).
I thought maybe I could override this setting in the .ashx page, so I alter the response's cacheability setting to public. This did not solve the issue. removing the line from global.asax does solve the problem but obviously affects the whole site.
Is there a way of setting the cachability just for my generic handler?
In an ASP.NET WebForms 2.0 site we are encountering an intermittent bug in IE6 whereby a file download attempt results in the contents of the being shown directly in the browser as text, rather than the file save dialog being displayed. Our application allows the user to download both PDF and CSV files. The code we're using is:
HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response;
response.Clear();
response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename="theFilename.pdf"");
response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
response.BinaryWrite(MethodThatReturnsFileContents());
response.End();
This is called from the code-behind click event handler of a button server control. Where are we going wrong with this approach? Edit Following James' answer to this posting, the code I'm using now looks like this:
HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response;
response.ClearHeaders();
// Setting cache to NoCache was recommended, but doing so results in a security
// warning in IE6
//response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename="theFilename.pdf"");
response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
response.BinaryWrite(MethodThatReturnsFileContents());
response.Flush();
response.End();
However, I don't believe that any of the changes made will fix the issue.
I'm trying to force a large (200+ MB) file to download that's on a remote server. The problem is that I can't use the "WriteFile()" function, since I'm not using a virtual path. Then, when I try:
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition",
