How To Force Browsers To Reload Cached CSS Files When Using Themes
Jan 19, 2011
I've seen "What is an elegant way to force browsers to reload cached CSS/JS files?" but the answer there uses PHP and it doesn't address the fact that the CSS is injected dynamically by an ASP.Net Theme.

I have run into the problem where my css files are being cached in browsers. This is a fairly common problem, and a common solution is to simple add a version number in the url to the css file. Example: MyCSS.css?ver=1.12
However, I'm using a custom skin for DotNetNuke which forces the usage of the file: skin.css
I don't have a way to point browsers to skin.css?ver=1.12 (or at least I'm not aware of a way)
Are there any tricks I can play with IIS, DNN, or ASP.NET (default.aspx file for DNN perhaps?) to force clients to reload CSS?

I've been playing around with a .NET ActiveX control in a web page as a possible solution to a particular situation. I set up a .NET user control project, added some UI controls, and eventually got the DLL to load in Internet Explorer and run. However, I've run into two problems.
1) I've tested it on two Win XP PC's, one with IE7 and the other with IE8. Everything works fine in IE8, but I get various permissions errors in IE7. Both machines have the same security settings in IE (it's in the trusted site zone, all ActiveX relating settings are the same, etc.). Does IE7 somehow interact with .NET differently then IE8? So far I've only been able to test it on the two machines.
2) Is there any way to force IE to reload the .dll from the server? I've tried everything I know (F5, Ctrl-F5, Ctrl-Refresh Button, Alt-D Enter, etc.), but it seems like IE randomly loads different versions of the .dll. Closing IE and restarting usually gets it to load the latest version, but that's not very convenient when making mods and testing them.

I have a gridview control where clicking on a specific row saves an ID number to session("ReportID") and then brings up a popup window. The popup window checks session("ReportID") on load and then displays the correct report information. This setup seems to work fine in Firefox and Safari, but for some reason IE is not refreshing the popup window. I'm trying to figure out a way to force IE to refresh/reload the popup window like it does in firefox/safari. If the popup is not refreshed then it won't update the information on page_load. Code below:
[Code]....
I thought that window.open should automaticly reload the page in the called popup window as this is what FF and safari seems to do, but maybe not. I think that the javascript .reload() may force IE to refresh the popup, but I don't know what the correct syntax would be.

I am developing a website in ASP.NET and I am using various javascript frameworks/libraries. The different files belonging to these frameworks/libraries rarely changes thus there is no reason to refresh those files once they have been sent to the client browser (atleast not everytime a page is served).I see that the HttpContext object can be used somehow, that I can set the content expiration on the files/folders on the IIS, or maybe setup somekind of caching in the web.config file. 1. What is best practice/what approach should I take

Having to deal with URL rewriting, I decided to programmatically add CSS references rather than relying on the automatic behavior of ASP.NET to add all CSS files within a theme automatically to the <head> of an ASPX page.I suceeded in adding the CSS file programmatically by using
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" runat="server" id="CssFile" />
and setting the actual URL it in code behind.My question is:Is there a way to prevent the ASP.NET "engine" from automatically adding all CSS files into the <head> of my ASPX/master page?(Of course, I still could go with my own folders and completely drop the App_Themes concept)

I built the asp.net website in release mode, set the debug flag to false in web.config, but still some of the webresource.axd and scriptresource.axd and javascript files are not getting cached. fiddler shows the status code "200" for these items instead of "304". what else I am missing to cache these files?

In my project, I have two themes applied to suite the two customers based on their username.
My structure is like these:
Theme1: -> xyz.css, xyz_blue.css, xyz_green.css, xyz_red.css
Theme2: -> xyz.css, xyz_blue.css, xyz_green.css, xyz_red.css
If I apply Theme1 or Theme2 to my project, since the common style definition names in the css files are same, it's not applying properly.
For kind information, before I start applying Themes, I was using "Link" to link the css file at run-time by enabling it using the "ID" property like
<link href="..." id="xyz"/>
It was working fine. AFter applying themes, it got confused like what css files to be loaded and what style definitions to be run as it is duplicated or a-needy-one for my approach in project.

We have an ASP.NET web application and it's hosted using IIS 6.0, in the app we have these several javascript and css files located in a folder, and for performance sake (according to YSlow) we set the folder content expiration header to 1 year. Everything worked just fine until recently when we deployed the latest build to the server, in which we had made some changes to those javascript and css files. For some reason after the deployment some of our end users don't see the latest changes when they connected to the app, even after they cleared the cache in IE. We have also restarted the IIS on the server and the problem still remained. When I went into the IE Temporary Internet Files folder on one of these machines I saw the files were still the older version and not the latest one, I had to manually delete the files from the Temporary Internet Files folder then they were able to see the latest changes. I'm baffled by this, how come only some users who couldn't see the changes but some others do (without having to do anything by the way), and how do I make sure that for future releases we won't have to do anything like what did (manually deleting the cached files)? For now I disabled the Content Expiration option in IIS for these files but I would like to know if there is a way that I can enable the content expiration (to help performance) but at the same time making sure when the files are updated, the latest version will be used for the end user (instead of the cached version)?

I am using the UrlRewriter.NET library to perform URL rewriting. I noticed that themes do not work properly as the browser tries to retrieve the CSS file incorrectly.
The link tag generated by ASP.NET automatically is as follows:
<link href="App_Themes/vertebrata/style.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" />
URL typed into browser: localhost:1708/BloggingEngine/aa Displays fine
URL typed into browser: localhost:1708/BloggingEngine/aa/ Browser does not load the CSS file
I can probably fix the problem by prefixing a "/" before the URL in the href attribute, but this is dynamically generated by ASP.net depending on selected theme and I have no control over it.
How do I get ASP.net to load themes properly?

why all the resources in my page are being requested EVERY single time. E.g. my site.css returns the following headers (using fiddler):
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: ASP.NET Development Server/9.0.0.0
Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:36:21 GMT
X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727
Content-Length: 9093
Cache-Control: public, max-age=2592000
Expires: Wed, 29 Dec 2010 17:36:21 GMT
Last-Modified: Mon, 08 Nov 2010 17:20:16 GMT
Content-Type: text/css
Connection: Close
But every time I hit refresh I see all the resources (css,js,images) getting re-requested. I have control over the headers returned for any and all of these resources, but I haven't figured it out yet.I have even debugged my ASP.NET app and the HttpModule is definitely being asked for the resources again.
EDIT:Ok, I removed must-revalidate, proxy-revalidate from the headers and that is getting me closer to where I want to be, now when I press back it still requests my css/js files when I press back.

I have a portfolio website I am building for fun, I am graduating about this time next year. I have added ASP.NET themes to this portfolio website, and I have added themes to other ASP.NET sites before. I really love the feature! I have been noticing though that other sites (not asp.net that I've seen) change "Themes" without the page refreshing and I understand its probably just changing which CSS the site is using. Is there a way to do something like this in ASP.NET 4.0?
I am just setting the default theme in the web.config, and then setting a session variable through a couple asp:ImageButton's, then in the Page_PagePrePreInit setting the page.theme to the session variable. This is my first time taking that route, I usually use "profiles" to save the theme info.
