How To Pass A Value To A String From A Local Resource

Feb 11, 2010

I have created a webpage called server.aspx and the related local resource file called server.aspx.resx. In the resourcefile I defined the message "{0} is required." with the key Error.

In my .aspx page I access the string:

<asp:RequiredFieldValidator ControlToValidate="textboxName" runat="server" ErrorMessage="<%$ Resources:Error %> ID="validatorName">

Now I want to pass a value, for example the name of the textbox 'Name' to the resource string, so that the errormessage is "Name is required."

Is there any possibility to pass a value to the string?

the wizard creates an entry for "Last Name", but not "First Name", is this by design? If yes, how do I work around that?

MVC - Local Resource / Attempting To Override The DisplayNameAttribute?

Jan 17, 2010

I am having an issue when attempting to override the DisplayNameAttribute in ASP.NET MVC to provide a localized string. The code itself is straightforward and similar to that in another Stackoverflow post link text

The code works for global resources but not so well for local resources. I have a registration screen and used the Visual Studio "Generate Local Resource" command to create my local resource file. The generated file is named Registration.aspx.resx and the App_LocalResources folder is created relative to the actual Registration.aspx page - as one would expect.

However, when I attempt to get the localized string using:

ResourceManager.GetString(resourceKey)

I receive the following error message.

Could not find any resources
appropriate for the specified culture
or the neutral culture. Make sure
"FullAssemblyName.Views.Account.App_LocalResources.Registration_aspx.resources"
was correctly embedded or linked into
assembly "FullAssemblyName" at compile
time, or that all the satellite
assemblies required are loadable and
fully signed.

Using reflector, I can see that the file is actually Registration.aspx.resources and not Registration_aspx.resources - the underscore/period being the subtle difference

FullAssemblyName.Views.Account.App_LocalResources.Registration.aspx.resources

I have toyed with the code quite a bit but no matter what I do, the file being requested is always different than that copiled in the assembly. For instance, if i rename Registration_aspx (in the generated Registration.aspx.designer.cs class i get the same error but this time the path is "...App_LocalResources.Registrationaspx.resources"

Has anyone run into this? Is there any way I can ensure that the resource found in my assembly has this underscore?

C# - Retrieving Local Resource Values Correctly: GetGlobalResourceObject Or Control?

Oct 25, 2010

While developing I've seen a couple different ways to get local resources values from the resx files. Which one is considered the best practice?

Using the GetGlobalResourceObject method:

<a id="myLink" href="#"><%= GetGlobalResourceObject("Filter","Diary")%></a>

Or using a control and setting the value directly in the resx.

Javascript - Reading Quoted Text From Local Resource File?

Jul 6, 2010

i'm using a little javascript in my website for my navigation bar, which is made up of a few ImageButton controls. in the code behind i have this:

Dim homeImage As String = GetLocalResourceObject("HomeImage")
imgBtnHome.Attributes.Add("OnMouseOver", HomeImage)

and in the resx file, i've tried these, but they don't work: (note the single and double quotes)

key: HomeImage value: "this.src='images/HomeImage.gif'"
key: HomeImage value: "this.src='images/HomeImage.gif'"

is it even possible to read "quoted" text from a local resource file?

C# - Can One Local .resx String Reference Another Local .resx String

Jun 18, 2010

I am trying to determine if it is possible to add a concatenated string to one of my local .resx files. This example should clarify:

Let's say I have a simple ASP.NET webpage composed of (1) a label whose text is an important keyword (2) an input with required field validation and (3) a button that causes validation to occur:

(lblMyInput)
(txtMyInput)
(rfvMyInput)
(btnSubmit)

Now, inside the resource file for this page, we want to localize the strings for the page's controls. However, for our error message, we want to use the literal name of the input's label. This is were my question is.

PSEUDOCODE: myPage.resx

(1) lblMyInput.Text = "Name"
(2) rfvMyInput.ErrorMessage = "The " + lblMyInput.Text + " field may not be left blank."
(3) btnSubmit.Text = "Submit/Validate"

Is there any way to pull off this type of concatenation of one resource file's string into another string within the same file?

C# - Concatenating String And A Resource Value?

Mar 14, 2011

I'm having a strange behavior in my .aspx page. I'm internationalizing some pages, but as I want to keep only entities or value object in my resource I want to have a key-value like:

(pt-br)
CITY - Cidade
STATE - Estado

But when I list the entities, I want to put the " : " at end. Like:

<asp:Label ID="LabelCity" runat="server" Text="<%$ Resources:Localizacao, CITY %>:"></asp:Label>

But, if I put the " : " after the resource in text property, the page only shows " : ".

My simple solution is put after all definition of label, but I think this too wrong:

<asp:Label ID="LabelCity" runat="server" Text="<%$ Resources:Localizacao, CITY %>"></asp:Label>:

Localization :: Recursive Resource String Handling?

Mar 23, 2010

When developing a rather complex web application that has to be localizable, it can be quite a dawnting task to make even the smallest change like changing a name for an abstract object type.To illustrate the problem, let's assume the user can create objects through our web application called a "FooBar". The web application most probably have numerous resource strings making reference to the object type "FooBar", for example, "Click here to create a new FooBar", or "Delete all the selected FooBars".During or even after the development life cycle of the web application, the owners decide that "FooBar" is not an appropriate name, and would like it to be renamed to "Thingamajic". In the web application there are thousands of references to "FooBar". Now one has to find all and replace them.

Save Local File Path As String And Open File From Saved String?

Jan 29, 2011

I have a form where users can store some data for archived documents. All documents are ONLY in PDF format.

There are 2 things I would like to do:

1. there is a "file path" text box on the form. I would like to open a "browse file dialog" box when user clicks the textbox and then the user browses for the file (file is on the users local machine) and selects it. The full file path should be saved to the textbox as string (e.g. "c:archive2010document11122011.pdf"). Also I would like to "limit" the file browser dialog to only show PDF format files...

2. add a code behind command to open the file from the saved path+name (see 1.) in the user's default PDF viewer (Acrobat or Foxit)

C# - Cannot Pass A Input From Text Box To A Query String And Then Keep The String In This Box?

May 28, 2010

I have a simple ASP.net page:

<form id="form1" runat="server">
<p><asp:TextBox id="input_box" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:Button Text="OK" runat="server" OnClick="run" /></p>
</form>

I want to send input from input_box to a query string, and then keep this input in the input_box when the page reloads.

That's the code behind page:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
input_box.Text = Request.QueryString["input"];
}
protected void run(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string url = string.Format("?input={0}", input_box.Text);
Response.Redirect(Request.Url.AbsolutePath + url);
}

Problem is that when query string is not empty, string from input_box cannot be passed to query string. How to correct it?

Web Forms :: A Centralized Web App That Uses A User's Local Connection String?

I am writing a web app for work. The users who are using this app will not be using the same connection string- for example, we have about 40 customers whose data resides in their respective database. The goal of this app is to be able to query the database for a given customer without having to go in and modify the web.config connection string (obviously, because that will change the connection string globally across users- I want the users to be able to have their own local connection string to be used by the app). is this possible?
