I have a pretty big web site (asp.net web) and I have used JavaScript intensively (jquery, custom javascipt, etc) and also The theme and CSS. Right now I have a huge amount of js and css files in my system and I am thinking about minifying and smashing the js and css to improve the performance. So, please advice me the suitable tools and technologies to be used and please suggest me the best practices to be applied in these scenario.

In my webpage, the page uses lots of images and css. The time taken to load the initial home page is huge. What are the ways, which can be done in IIS 6.0 to improve the performance?I checked few results in google, which talked about File expiration policy and enabling http compression in IIS 6.0. In the Enable content expiration, what value should be ideally used?In the Custom Http header, what should be added to improve the performance.

I have developed a gridview which has 7,000 records with some filtering. However, theuser is compaining that it is too slow. It seems to me that if the records were stored in memory it would be much faster. This is caching, I think. Is that the case? Can you updaterecords this way? Can you cache with an Access database or do you have to use SQL Server? Can you think of any other ways to improve

I'm doing a timesheet program. In this timesheet program, I have a default button. If a person doing a same task everyday, they can just fill out the task description & click on default button, it will add that task for 5 days.my question is that my button click has to hit database 7 times. Is there anyway that I can improve this?

This is a continuation on this question:The problem is simple. I need to call methods from a REST web service which controls several tables. One table is a snapshot table which contains records with huge XML files. Each XML file is basically a backup from another database. This backup XML is then sent to customers who use the data as read-only information in another product. Basically, the data in the XML are lists of companies, products, business rules and whatever more. And no, those customers work offline most of the time, so they cannot get the data live.Walking through the list of snapshots is tricky: XMLData.Snapshots.Skip(N).Take(1).First(); but it works very nice. It's the answer of the previous Q.But there are three other lists of data that I need to walk through. These are called Changes, Errors and Messages. They contain (1) changes to the data, (2) errors that occurred during modifying the data and (3) generic messages. All of these records are linked to a snapshot record. Thus a single snapshot can contain multiple changes, errors and messages.
I still cannot access the server code but since there's a REST service wrapped around an entity framework exposing most of the functionality, I can still use that service. (And that service is only accessible internally, on the Intranet. This is basically what I have to work with. And while the lists of changes, errors and messages are relatively small, the snapshots are still huge.
The problem is that I now want to generate a client-side report of the changes, errors and messages, but without grouping them by snapshot! They need to be grouped by date. But each record also needs to show the title of the snapshot, which causes me some incredible headaches...When walking through e.g. the Changes with the regular foreach instruction I can load the Snapshot data by using XMLData.LoadProperty(Change, "Snapshots"); but since the snapshot record itself is generally about 300 MB, this just slows the whole thing down to a crawl. (There are tens of thousands of these records in total!) So I need a faster solution, without having to modify the server code.
Yeah, okay. Modifying the server would be the proper way but that's not possible. It's in production and this list isn't important enough to require an upgrade of the server. Basically, I'm not allowed to modify any server-code for now. (But they still want this list.)The application I'm working on is something that just needs to run once per week or per month. But with the current amount of records, I estimate it would take more than two days to finish. The data itself will be updated a few times every office day and snapshots are created every week or so on the server. Errors can always be generated when users start browsing the site which maintains the data but in general, there will be about 50 changes and 4 errors per week, plus a few messages when the server goes down and up again or when snapshots are generated.

I have developed a website in asp.net framework 2 . This website is being hosted in two different servers without any change in code. My issue is about the performance of these 2 sites. One website is taking much time for inserting datas to the DB (SQL server 2005). 2 websites are having different DB server.
I think the issue is for the DB server. How can we rectify the DB performance while insertion and Is there any other cause for this permance issue?

I am not sure if this is the right forum. I can not find a forum for LINQ.
I am working on an application using LINQ. Application performance is not up to par and my tests show that it is LINQ queries that are slow. I was wondering if anybody can recommend where I can find an article about optimizing LINQ performance maybe by compilation or other methods.

I have developed a gridview which has displays 8,000 records. However, the user is compaining that it is too slow. A major function of this gridview is to filter on two of the columns. It seems to me that if the records were stored in memory it would be much faster. This is caching, I think. Is that the case? Since filtering is being done I don't think custom paging will help much. When they submit a filter, with custom paging wouldn't the entire table be read again? So I was thinking of trying caching which is available on SQL Server. Am I on the right track? Can you cache with an Access database? Can you think of any other ways to improve performance of a gridview?

I have a parent gridview5 with child gridview 6, today i deployed it to our dev server and on that server we have alot more records, so for the nested gridviews i need to enable paging on the parent gridview5. Doing so works fine, until i make a selection within the child gridview6, once any selection is made, and i try to page the page throws an error, i have the following bound to the parent gridview5.

In my website need to display 5000+ records in gridview. So, I used custom paging for static page bar and displaying 100 records per page. In stored procedure using ROW NUMBER() keyword to retrieve specific records from the database. Even though website is running dead slow. Is there any alternate way apart from the ROW NUMBER() to increase the website performance. I followed the below article to achieve custom paging.....

In my asp.net Page I am using gridview. I am binding the gridview on page load and on paging event with one method. suppose as Bindgridview1();.
There is one search button for searching the records of user with different method suppose as Bindgridview2(); .
when I am searching the records with Bindgridview2(); paging doesn't work and directly bind with Bindgridview1(); which is on page load when I clicked next page.

I'm trying to extend the GridView control to enable sorting and paging for any situation.
When using my control I am fetching data from a database and filling a DataSet with it, then binding the GridView upon every page load. My first question would be, is this the correct approach?
To sort the GridView I am overriding the OnSorting method which stores the sort expression and direction in the ViewState, then creates a DataView and utalises the Sort method to sort the underlying data. It then sets the Data Source to this DataView and rebinds the GridView.
Paging is handled by OnPageIndexChanging which simply sets the PageIndex property and again rebinds the GridView.
My problem is; when any control causes a postback my GridView is no longer sorted, presumably because it is persistently rebound. If I don't rebind it then the GridView is empty on postback since the data isn't automatically stored in the ViewState. I have considered saving the data source in the ViewState but I would assume that this is bad practice for large amounts of data? - also DataViews are not seralisable.
The only solution I can think of currently is to override OnDataBound and sort the data every time. This results in a double sort when paging triggers a postback which seems inefficient. Code illustration of this below,

I'm looking for the cleanest 'best practice' solution as this is a learning exercise more than anything else.

I am trying to speed up a Gridview on my page that reads 8,000 records using an AccessDataSource. So I am trying to implement caching. I have used the information given here: [URL] but it has made no difference in the response time. Can anyone direct me on this? Is there something you have to specify in the gridview (besides the datasource). Would it work if I went to SQL Server?
This is my AccessDataSource code. You can see the 3 relevant lines starting 6 lines from the top.

I have a GridView that is populated via a dataset that contain 1 table. I have enabled paging on my GridView.
In my Updating event, I handle the new values and call a store proc to update my database with the new values for the selected row. In order to minimize the call to the DB, instead of getting back a new dataset with the updated values, I simply update the row of the dataset that I have in session with the new values and then I bind back my gridview.
The problem that I have is since I have let's say 5 pages of 10 row... If I update a row on the first page as soon as I click update, the gridview will show the new values. However, if I select page 3 for example, click on update and update the values, once the update is done, the gridview will still be displayed with the old values.

I have developed a application using Visual Studio 2008 and SQLServer 2008. I have a page called "Billing Center" where i need to display more than 500 records in a gridview and the gridview has sorting enabled. If i limit the page size upto 10 only the gridview performs well but user requirement is to view atleast 500 records at once which is slowing down the gridview record retrieval process.
I am using the following C# code in code behind to sorting, paging and retrieval . Please guide me what am i doing wrong in this code and how to make it work with large data set.

My question is, can I control the style of the paging element separately of top and bottom, I have set the paging to appear in both top and bottom of the gridview, and I want to see that the top pagination is little high up in the page, to do that I used the cssClass and set margin-top:20px and made the position: absolute, this does change the position of the top paging area and set it rightly for me, but the bottom pagination has also come up as a result and now sits inside the grid data!!

I hoping someone could answer a question for me. I am relatively new to developing web applications with .NET and I have question I can't seem to find a straight answer to. When allowing paging of a GridView control, how does retrieve the data per-page? Is all the data stored into an object, and then displayed x amount of rows at a time? Or, when moving from page to page, is it executing each time but restraining the result to the specified amount of rows?
