My previous development PC was running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. My new PC has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. My Solution contains 3 projects. The Solution has been converted from VWD 2008 to 2010 fine. There are no errors when I build either of the projects. One of them is not working though. When I start debugging, my default browser does not open (problem 1). When I browse the the website manually, pages of that specific project

Visual Studio 2010 - How To Prevent Application From Constantly Restarting In Development Environment

Mar 10, 2011

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and working on an ASP.NET 4.0 web application. At the moment, a co-worker and I are tweaking CSS, which means constantly changing and saving CSS files and then refreshing the running page in a web browser.Every few saves, the application restarts, causing a considerable delay while we wait for the app to start up, log in again, and return to the page we were working on. In an IIS production environment a CSS file wouldn't go through the ASP.NET ISAPI, but apparently when running with VS2010 and the developent web server this doesn't matter... or something.

Installation :: Installation Of 2010 Failed On Windows 7?

Feb 22, 2011

I've encountered a problem while installing Visual Studio 2010 on Windows 7, I've tried to modify the privileges of the destination folders to no avail, I've also tried to delete everything related to it with a removal tool. The problem is that the installation is always unsuccessful at the same point, providing me a Blue Screen of Death (twice) and the following error message (infinite amount of occasions):

[Code]....

Does anybody know the cause of the error? Is there an easier and less time consuming solution than reinstalling the whole system?

Installation :: Access Denied To Machine.config - Windows 7 Development Environment

Mar 14, 2010

I have just ported my VS2008 development environment to a new computer running Windows 7. One roadblock I'm having is that when I edit machine.config in VS2008, I cannot save it back to its location - I get an error saying Access Denied. I am logged in as Administrator and have tried to set myself up as owner but the crazy security rules in Windows 7 are frustrating this operation. (I could do this on my previous system - VS2008 running XP.) I set the Administrators permissions to Full Control and made this file's owner Administrators (vs the previous SYSTEM)

VS 2010 - CSS Does Not Load In Production Environment

Apr 9, 2012

In my development environment, my CSS loads perfectly. But when I publish the files to the server, the CSS no longer loads.

Originally, when I had this problem, it was because I was denying access to unknown users for all directories. It was also occurring in both environments.

When I fixed that, the CSS started working just fine. But when I publish it to the server, it no longer works.

The website appears to function. I can log in, navigate pages and everything. It's just that the CSS doesn't work.

I checked the permission on the directory and it has access to NETWORK SERVICE, the admin account and IIS_IUSRS.

Protecting Personally Identifiable Data In SQL Server 2008 Environment

Jan 18, 2011

I've read up on SQL Server 2008's encryption function, but I'm not convinced that's the route I want to go. My problem ultimately boils down to the fact that we're either using symmetric keys or assymetric keys encrypted by a symmetric key. Thus it seems like a SQL injection attack could lead to a data leak. I realize permissions should prevent that, permissions should also prevent the leaking in the first place.

It seems to me the better method would be to asymmetrically encrypt the data in the web application. Then store the private key offline and have a fat client that they can run the few times a year they need to access the restricted data so the data could be decrypted on the client. This way, if the server get compromised, we don't leak old data although depending on what they do we may leak future data. I think the big disadvantage is this would require re-writing the web application and creating a new fat application (to pull the restricted data). Due to the recent problem, I can probably get the time allocated, so now would be the proper time to make the recommendation.
