JQuery :: Learning Curve / Compared To AJAX?
May 21, 2010
I've been thinking about starting to work with AJAX because it seems easy to use things like the update panel. I also want to use a modal popup. I know that JQuery has some really stuff and I want to use it eventually. I want to take the path of least resistance for now though.
there seems to be some overlap in what the two technologies offer. There are similar things offered in both of them. I think I have to use AJAX for the partial page updates though.
How is the learning curve for JQuery compared to AJAX?

I have to create a web application that allows you to create specific XML documents. To generate a document, the user must be able to fill out fields that will be the XML content, using dropdown lists, text input fields, calendar controls ... Some fields will be validated. use some default values (text, new GUID, current date ...) add or remove sub nodes. The minimum an maximum number of nodes will be validated. All fields, relations and validations should be configurable by using config files. I have an idea of how to implement this in a homebrew MVP or MVVM pattern way.
Now I wonder if MVC 2 can help me enough to justify the learning curve. (MVC 3 is not an option, as my client still uses VS2008.) In two weeks I should have a working application. It is for internal "power user" use, so it doesn't have to look too fancy, but the main concept and functionality should be waterproof. My background: I have many years of experience with Win Forms developement and basic knowledge of ASP.NET (did some smaller apps with it).

For the moment, I'm trying to learning some basic jQuery. But when I try to create a small thing with jQuery, it doesn't work. First, I thought that it was my standard browser Chrome that was not supported.
When I tried to render it in IE and Firefox, the result stays the same.
What do I wrong ?
Here u can find the code (ps I'm working with a master page, but I don't think that this has any influence)
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="HeadContent" runat="server">
<script src="Scripts/jquery-1.4.1.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#orderedlist").addClass("tof");
$("#orderedlist > li").addClass("groen");

This thread is more about learning, actually I have a web service which just returns string. I have been calling this service from code behind and updating lable with the string received from the web service.
Now I want to call web service using JavaScript. As far as I know, I have to add <asp:ScriptManager..../>. Second I have to add [ScriptService] to the web service.
But I don't wat to add <asp:ScriptManager..../> and [ScriptService].
Is there any way to call web service using javascript without adding <asp:ScriptManager..../> and [ScriptService]
Also, I am kind of lost in SOAP, JSON. I am not getting where I actually use SOAP, JSON. Using <asp:ScripManager../> and [ScriptService], I actually didn't see use of SOAP, JSON.

I'm developing an asp.net web site to work on mobile devices. Is going ok and works fine with android and iphone. I've no got around to testing it with blackberry in my balcberry curve. When i first tried everything looked good b ut then i noticed that some od the autopost back on dropdowns etc did not work. Some research time later i turn out out that by default that blackberries do not support this and that I need a Blackberr.browser file to allow that type of functionality to work. I following this link...http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/BlackberryASPNET.aspxAfter doing this my blakberry will not load the site at all, i just get connection timeouts. So i tried removing the blackberry.browser file, read loading the assembley in an attempt to get back to where is was, but still the site will not connect. I've refreshed iis, recycled app pools and even rebooted. I have a QA site on another box that the blackberry will connect to, but my development machine it does not like anymore

I have a legacy solution where all the DataSources are defined in the markup for all .aspx-pages. The problem I have with this is that the DataSource get instantiated several times since it is used in page, control... What I want is to have NInject to handle the instantiation of the DataSource so this doesn't happen. I have got that part to sort of work, but when the DataSource is defined in the code-behind instead of in the markup the Page property is not set on the DataSource, does anyone know why? A simple solution to this is to set the the Page property in a base class or something, but I do think that the property should be there and want to know why.

I have developed an application that interacts with IBM ClearQuest. The problem is that when I run everything locally, such as, run the webservice local and then ASP page local everything is at the speed I expect. When I post the webservice (precompiled) to the server and run the web page through the server, the call to the webmethod takes at least 10x the amount of time it should. I dont know why this is happening. I made a console application that has the function in question and execute it on the server and locally and they both return the same amounts of time (roughly) its just when I move to executing via the webmethod everything grinds to a snails pace. Any ideas? This happens every time not just on the first call.
WebMethod:

I am using VB.NET and I can't compare the radio button lists selectedItem.Value to a string, it doesn't work...here is the code: (I have also tried selectedValue it does not work either)
Response.Write("RB1: " + rblOne.SelectedItem.Value + " FML FML FML<br/>")
If rblOne.SelectedItem.Value = "No" Then
Response.Write("Hey there!<BR/>")
pnlR1.Visible = True
If NumberOfAnswers = 7 Then
Score = Score - 10
ElseIf NumberOfAnswers = 6 Then
Score = Score - 15
Else
Score = Score - 20
End If
Response.Write("Score: " + Score.ToString)
End If
Response.End()
If rblOne.SelectedItem.Value = "No" Then is not working, notice the debug statements in there, here is the output: Why won't it evaluate that rblOne.SelectedItem.Value = "No" !?!?!? I tried rblOne.SelectedValue, that doesn't work, AND I added .ToString to both

currently in our application we have an ApplicationConfiguration class. It is basically just a static class with const values specifying certain application-global configuration options. Some of these values will rarely if ever change and are only put into the configuration for elegance/cleanness.
Some of these values though do need to be different between production and development. So I'm considering making this class just a wrapper over Web.config. These values are checked many times throughout our codebase. If I change these from a const to a read-only getter that reads from Web.config will this affect compiler optimizations or make our application in any way slower?

What are the pros and cons between using the ASP.Net control compared to the old reliable table html implementation. I know that the asp:Table will end up on the returned page as a html table, and from looking into it so far people are saying its easier to work with the asp:Table in the server side code, but I'd love to hear what the stackoverflow community has to say about the matter.
