Large Number Of Session_Start With Same Session Id?
Feb 9, 2010
I'm running a ASP.NET website on my development box (.NET 2.0 on Vista/IIS7).
The Session_Start method in global.asax.cs logs every call to a file (log4net).
The Session_End method also logs every call.
I'm using InProc session state, and set the session timeout to 5 mins (to avoid waiting for 20 mins).
I hit the website, wait for 5 minutes unit I see the Session_End logging. Then I F5 the website. The browsers still has the session cookie and sends it to the server. Session_Start is called and a new session is created using the same session id (btw: I need this to be the same session id, because it is used to store data in database).
Result:
Every time I hit F5 on a previously ended session, the Session_Start method is called.
When I open a different browser, the Session_Start method is called just once. Then after 5 minutes the Session_End each F5 causes the Session_Start method to execute.
Update:
After the Session timeout, all subsequent requests have a session start & session end. So in the end my question is: why are the sessions on these subsequent request closed immediatly?

We have an MVC.NET application that encounters fatal errors when it restarts. In our Session_Start event handler, we add the session id to a dictionary. In the Session_End handler, we remove it. Consider the following sequence of requests:
GET home.mvc
<application restarts>
GET main.css
GET banner.jpg
GET somedata.mvc
...
Because of the way the application is architected, this sort of sequence happens fairly frequently if you do a rebuild while the application is open in a browser window. That wouldn't be terribly concerning except that I see it in production environments too. For example, it will occur (albeit rarely) when you edit web.config.
The requests following the restart are all due to links in the home page or AJAX calls from JavaScript.
What I observe is that .NET handles the first 5 requests in parallel. Each such request causes it to fire the Session_Start event. After a short time, it fires the Session_End event 3 times. To be clear, each Session_Start corresponds to the exact same session. They all have the same session id and the IsNewSession property is true for all session state objects. Also, the Session_End events do not correspond to the session being killed. The session persists, along with any data stored in session state.
I need to either prevent it from firing Session_Start more than once or figure out how to tell when Session_End doesn't really mean that the session has ended.

I am working on a website in which more than a thousand users can login at a time and there may be more than 50000 total users. I am worried about the performance of the application in case of concurrent access.
what is the best way to manage that, so that my application runs without any performance issues.

My environment is ASP.Net + IIS 7.0 + Windows Server 2008 + .Net 3.5. I am wondering whether the number of users online and number of active session are the same thing? The other question is, no matter whether they are the same, how to calculate them (i.e. for a given time, what is the number of users online, and related active number of sessions)?

I want to insert a large amount( approx 7000 records) of data into a table, My scenarios is that i need to check whether the record already exists then it will not insert it. Currently i am using a stored procedure for this which gets called for each record.
IF EXISTS(SELECT 'True' FROM MYTABLE WHERE ID = @ID)
BEGIN
--This means it exists, return it to ASP and tell us
SELECT 'This record already exists!'
END
ELSE
BEGIN
--This means the record isn't in there already, let's go ahead and add it
SELECT 'Record Added'
IF EXISTS(SELECT 'True' FROM [Aadil].[dbo].[SharePointSitesData] WHERE ID <> @ID)

Working on a heavy ajax based site with over 100 methods from all the ajax calls inside each of each controller all with basically the same code. Was thinking of changing them to a big case statement for readability which would keep the code a bit more dry and make it easier to read. What I am wondering is: Will there be a performance hit and is there a better way to deal with it?

I have 65 columns in the grid, if the columns are reduced to 20 then the speed when accessing from client is more or less similar to that accessing from web browser. Does it mean that all this performance issue is due to the data only ???

I have an ASP.net VB Web app I'm working on that has a requirement to provide a list of all our component part numbers to our engineers for selection into a custom Bill of Materials for reworking of an assembly. The list of part numbers is currently generated from a stored proc in our MRP systems/SQL database. The number of records being generated is slightly over 39K part numbers.
Although the SP only takes a few seconds to generate the data the web page is taking a couple of minutes to load, primarily because of the time to fill the control presenting the records to the engineers. I've bound the data to a combobox control to the engineer. They want to be able to type the first few characters of the part number if they know it and have the list filtered or be able to just scroll the data to find the part they are looking for.
I've read elsewhere that they may be a way to only populate a certain quantity of records rather than all 39K then filter based on the users actions. Unfortunately the discussions about doing this didn't provide any examples, references, etc.
My questions are these...
Is there a better way to handle this quantity of records than a stored proc and combobox? A
ny examples of a method to populate a certain number of records then filter based on user action?

I have around 100 rdl report files...what i have found in google is -> open RS Admin site upload each report...doing this manually takes a lot of time... We don't want to use Target report server url method and clicking deploy option to deploy the reports or report project onto the report server...because we are not provided with such production server url information...!! In client perspective...We just give the reports as a rar file...now client will have to extract the report files...and what should be the next step...!! Is there anyway to deploy or upload all the reports at a time...!!

Frameworks like Node.js, Tornado, and Twisted let developers create server-push applications that supports large number of concurrent hanging requests (10k+). From what I understand, they all achieve this by not creating threads to service each hanging request.
Can AsyncController be used to service large number of inactive concurrent requests? If so, are there any reasonably large ASP.NET MVC websites using this approach to create long-poll applications?

I have a user control that is common to the application. It searchs for lakhs of Items in one go from the db and I set the selected Items in a list in a session to pass on to the pages that use it. Hence making the application a tad slower. The gridview that contains the Items should have sorting, page indexing. What according to u,I should do to enhance the application's performance ?

I'm developing a web app for which the client wants us to query their data as little as possible. The data will be coming from a Microsoft CRM instance.
So we've agreed that data will only be queried as and when it is needed, therefore if a web user wants to see a list of contacts (for example) that list is fetched into a local DataTable. Then if a new contact is created on the website the new contact is sent to CRM and added to the local DataTable at the same time. Likewise for edits.
If the user then looks at their contacts again the data will just come from the local DataTable.

Im in the process of developing a web application, and I wish to store a reasonable amount of data for each user.
This data will be accessed each time the page is refreshed.
The only 2 options that I have come up with is:
* Session Data
* Storing the information in a text file with random file names for each person
* Database
The first one I do not really want to use as it would bog down the server - the second one is cumbersome
Is there any other options?
If possible i was thinking using the database, but am hesitant because of the amount of times the accessing of the database would need (every refresh for every user)
I dont want to store the information inside the viewstate (i dont know what MS was thinking when they thought of viewstate)

I have a asp.net application where I am saving off into session the user privilege information. From a grid I am bring up a new window by using the window.open. It seems that it is whiping out the values in session. A temporary bandaid I have placed on it is to recall the database if the value is nothing to reset the user object. I have found all over the internet that this is an issue with the window.open in IE 7 and IE 8. Has anyone else run into this and able to actually fix it?
