Storing Large Amounts Of Session Data?
Feb 16, 2010
Im in the process of developing a web application, and I wish to store a reasonable amount of data for each user.
This data will be accessed each time the page is refreshed.
The only 2 options that I have come up with is:
* Session Data
* Storing the information in a text file with random file names for each person
* Database
The first one I do not really want to use as it would bog down the server - the second one is cumbersome
Is there any other options?
If possible i was thinking using the database, but am hesitant because of the amount of times the accessing of the database would need (every refresh for every user)
I dont want to store the information inside the viewstate (i dont know what MS was thinking when they thought of viewstate)

I have an asmx web service I am "Upgrading" to WCF. It's function is to pass a DataTable to the Remote Server. It works fine as long as the dataset contains under 20 records(more or less). Anything greater than that returns the error:
The remote server returned an unexpected response: (400) Bad Request
Everything I searched on the web says I need to increase things like maxBufferSize in my Web.Config File, but like so many others, it has produced no results. This seems like it should be a simple fix.
I am using VS 2010 on Windows 7. All Development and debugging is being done on the localhost. What I currently have for my web.Config file is below:

We have a scenario where we need to store large tables of data on Session in asp.net page. on a highlevel we have to store following data
1> A table (table 1) with 1000 rows and 8 to 10 columns.
2> A table(table 2) with 500 rows and 8 to 10 columns (actually user can add the data from table 1 to table 2, so as user keeps on adding from table 1 we remove the data and put it in table 2)
3> Another table(table 3) with 1000-1200 rows each having 3 columns.
We are having a webfarm, so we need to store it in either SateServer of Oracle DB,What would be the performance implications of storing such huge data on the server.
One more thing is at any point of time max of 70 -80 people will be accessing our website, so will this cause any performance degradation?

I have part of a project whereby I need to send 1 to up to 2000 emails from a webpage. One open source bug tracker used a Thread to send emails but it was riddled with bugs. So just want to know if anyone has any ideas of how I can create a procedure that send up to 2000 emails a go?
I was told by one of my colleagues to leave it as one process (normal routine sending one email at a time) as it won't take long to process all the emails anyway. Doesn't seem right and I want to use threading... maybe I like complex routines?
[Extra]
I have something like:
foreach(string email in emailAddresses)
{
MailMessage mailMessage = new MailMessage();
mailMessage.To.Add(...)
...
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
client.Send(mailMessage);
}

I have developed an asp.net application that I developed using visual studio express 2008.
With this application, I have 20 sales items. I can sell 10 of each item each day. Customers can order the items in advance but once an item has more than 10 orders for the day then I can not sell any more of the items for that given day. If a customer tries to order another item after 10 has already been ordered then I must tell them that no further items of that kind are available. So for each day there can be possible 200 orders total (20 items x 10 sales). Customers can order months in advance...
So, my question is what kind of storage device do I use to keep track of this kind of data? Database or application variable or other?

I have a scenario for which I wanted the best solution in asp.net c#. My application allows users to retrieve search data from database, this data is the users own temporary list of records which they can search, delete records or select them. All these actions are only on users temporary data list and not on the data base. I have currently carried out this functionality using data table which is stored in session. This method is causing problems when huge amounts of data is held in session (eg: 7000 records). I need a best possible solution for this. Is creating temporary tables an option? Can it be assigned to particular user sessions? Please point me to the right direction and right articles.

I want to upload some large files from a web page to MS SQL Sever database, I am very sure that it is sounding weird.
File sizes are around 100MB.
I am having following settings,
SessionTimeOut period = 60 Mins,
Server Operation timeout = 60 Mins,
SQL Connection Timeout = 4 mins (Not sure if this is helping)
This is page is going to be used by our client only once a week & as they are having web farm environment we are avpiding to store these files on file systems.
Currenty we are able to upload files with sizes upto 8 MB succesfully. But when we are uploading a file of 100MB it fails, its for sure that operation takes lots of time.

Is it possible to store gridview session data after each postback. I have a gridview and a checkbox within. Each time a user clicks the checkbox, I like to store the gridview ID in a session. After browsing through various pages, I like this session datato continuously store the information up to 20mins?
How can I continously store the session variable. Say a text box and if I enter 1 click on a hyperlink (where session variable is stored) return back to the page, enter 2 click hyperlink then I should get in the session 12?

I'm developing a web app for which the client wants us to query their data as little as possible. The data will be coming from a Microsoft CRM instance.
So we've agreed that data will only be queried as and when it is needed, therefore if a web user wants to see a list of contacts (for example) that list is fetched into a local DataTable. Then if a new contact is created on the website the new contact is sent to CRM and added to the local DataTable at the same time. Likewise for edits.
If the user then looks at their contacts again the data will just come from the local DataTable.

I am using asp.net mvc 2.0 to implement shopping cart application.My situation is , I have a order page, there i am adding the products to the Cart.Below it will show the Cart total.Next i will go to the shopping cart page to delete or editing the items.In this page it will show the same cart total as in the Order page.
But once again if i go back to the Order page to order some more products to the cart,the cart total in the order page is showing 0 amount. This is my Shopping cart controller action method,
public ActionResult ShoppingCart(int eventID)
{
Event e = eRepository.GetEvent(eventID);
var cart = Stalbans.Models.ShoppingCart.GetCart(this.HttpContext);
[Code]....
So once i will go to the shopping cart page from the order page and again coming back to the order page it has to show the same cart total. Actually data is persisted in the cart total but it is not showing .Because if you add one more item its amount will added to the existimng cart total and then shows the current cart total. So for the first time i click back at that it has to show the already existed cart total in the cart total value.

I've been strugglying with this for some time now and I cannot seem to find what I'm doing wrong. I have a gridview with a hyperlink field, so when the user clicks on the hyperlink it takes them to the next page but I want to store 2 field value's in session. I've tried it the url way but I get a "Input string was not in a correct format"
and for security reasons I dont think its the best way, the only other way is for it to be stored in session.

I need to store a large amount of data in user's session but I guess using Session Object is not the best way of doing that. Is there any other way around??? Remember I don't have small variables to store, I have large collections.

I am using access database with asp.net C# page.
I have multiple amounts that I need to display and edit. I am trying to understand the best way to do this..
In MSAccess:
Should I define them as currency or number?
ASP.net
if I use formatting for the field as {0:C}, it works fine in View mode. However, i am unable to update the field in Edit mode for an amount with decimal places. In Edit mode, I can only enter whole numbers(ex: I can enter 123, but not 1.23).
If I set the ApplyFormattingInEditMode=True, I am unable to save data entered in any format($123.23, 123, 123.23, all of them cause the error).
The error I am getting is "Input string is not in a correct format".

How do you create a dictionary of objects in the session? More specifically, I have a list of objects: MyList stores MyObject as the result of a linq query with the date as a parameter.
List<MyObject> Mylist;
MyList = GetObjects(TheDate);
Now I'd like to store MyList in the session object in a dictionary with the date as the key. When the page needs a MyList for a specific date, first search the dictionary and if it's blank for that date, get the data from the GetObjects query and store the result in the dictionary in the session.

When a use is logged in (Through open-id) we are creating a session variable named "UID" and storing the unique user-id in it. Later we are checking the session to see if the user is logged in. I think this is not the right way, but I could not force the team to change this, as I cannot show how this implementation can be cracked. why (If yes) this implementation is bad?

I'm running a ASP.NET website on my development box (.NET 2.0 on Vista/IIS7).
The Session_Start method in global.asax.cs logs every call to a file (log4net).
The Session_End method also logs every call.
I'm using InProc session state, and set the session timeout to 5 mins (to avoid waiting for 20 mins).
I hit the website, wait for 5 minutes unit I see the Session_End logging. Then I F5 the website. The browsers still has the session cookie and sends it to the server. Session_Start is called and a new session is created using the same session id (btw: I need this to be the same session id, because it is used to store data in database).
Result:
Every time I hit F5 on a previously ended session, the Session_Start method is called.
When I open a different browser, the Session_Start method is called just once. Then after 5 minutes the Session_End each F5 causes the Session_Start method to execute.
Update:
After the Session timeout, all subsequent requests have a session start & session end. So in the end my question is: why are the sessions on these subsequent request closed immediatly?

i m developing an application in .NET mvc2. i m using aspnetMembershipProvider for User registration and related activities. i need some custom information about user that i stored in a separate table (sysUser for example) and linked it to aspnetUser table through foreign key. after Login i need to fetch user's credentials from sysUser table and push it to the session. For this Account controller's Logon method seemed best to me and i pasted following code in my Logon ActionResult
[Code]....
The code is working perfectly for me and put my desired information in the session but the thing is that if a user selects Remember me and on his next visit he won't have to Log in and i would not find my desired information in the Session. where should i put my code that stores the user information in the session.

I have created a custom user creation wizard to store custom user information, This is working fine. I am now trying to create a new page to give the newly created user to create users in there own company, so i need to retrieve the company information from the user profile created and automaticlly fill that information into the new create user wizard. ie User from A company logs in. (company_id from profile is stored in session)
User A wants to make another user in company A (but cannot make a user in company B) User A fills in details for new user, Company A information is autofill into new user info. (possibly from session)
I have read alot about storing membership. info into session but i cannot find any code examples of how to do this. I need to find a way to store Company_id into session and then use that for creating a new user with the same Company_id.

I have this program in which I am trying to store a collection of values into a list and session
Example:
valueCollection = (List<Values>)Session["Value"];
I want to do the front end in a way which will show a table with each row showing a label and textbox. This would be too simple to do obviously but I want it to show 4 rows of the table by default and then the user can select "add another" this will then add another row onto the table with a label and textbox exactly similar to the 4 default. Everytime the user selects "add another" the table increments by 1.
