MVC :: Returning A Model And A Html Fragment?
Sep 29, 2010
I have a web page with a form in the footer, when the user clicks submit in this form I submit their data and then return the view with the model with the line
[Code]....
but this means that the user is at the top of the page and cannot immediately see the validation errors or success message on that page as this information is posted in the footer section so is there a way to return a view with the model and a html fragment so the url is http://website/page#footer so that they can see this straight away without having to scroll down.
Also I have to assume the user has javascript turned off and the user could be using browsers ie6 and greater.

I have a view which contains input fields based on 2 models. The first is a basic info model and the rest of the fields are based on a list on my other model type. To encompass the 2 types of model, I have a container parent view model and in my view I'm using "RenderPartial" to display the relevant fields. the container parent view model is similar to:
[Code]....
When I submit the form I'm successfully getting my main summary model and the list of data models:
[Code]....
so, up until here all seems ok. Now, these 2 view models are linked to data layer models which in turn link to 3 tables in my db (each summary data model contains an instance of a 3rd model) what I want to know is, what is the best way of inserting the data into my db which caters for any failure without losing database integrity. The insert flow will be somthing like:
1. Insert Summary Model to DB - returning ID
2. Insert Container model (which links summary to the data) and return id
3. For each summary data model in this container, add the data (using the container model id in step 2).
I am using the entity framework. normally, i'd have a single routine using a data layer version of my container parent view model which does the insert in a single method. i'd use a connection transaction so that i could rollback if needed.

When adding a stored procedure into the Entity Data Model I can select whether the procedure returns a scalar, a (new) complex type or one of the entity types I already defined.I mean assuming I have a view like this
CREATE VIEW FilteredFoos as SELECT Foo.* FROM Foo join ... WHERE ...(that is a view that implements some involved filtering, but returns all columns from one table) how do I add it to the project so that I can use the entity set, but get the Foo objects, not some new FilteredFoo objects.
var foos = myDB.FilteredFoos.Include("Bar").ToList();
foreach (Foo foo in foos) { ...

I am working on an ASP.NET MVC 2 project with VS 2010 and out of nothing I get the following errors on my views:
The name 'Html' does not exist in the current context
The name 'Model' does not exist in the current context
It is like it is not recongnizing the MVC Html and Model classes.
I have System.Web.Mvc on my references and on Web.Config I have:

I think I need to drop in some escape characters, but I'm not quite sure where. Here is the javascript function I'm attempting to call:
function setData(associateValue, reviewDateValue) {
var associate = document.getElementById("Associate");
var reviewDate = document.getElementById("ReviewDate");
associate.value = associateValue;
reviewDate.value = reviewDateValue;
}
Here is the asp .net mvc line where I'm attempting to create a Radio button with a click event that calls the above function and passes data from the model as javascript parameter values.
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('<%=item.Associate%>','<%=item.ReviewDate%>' )" } )%>
The above throws a bunch of compile issues and doesn't work. A call such as the following does call the javascript, but doesn't get the data from the model.
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('item.Associate','item.ReviewDate' )" } )%>
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('item.Associate','item.ReviewDate' )" } )%>
<% String functionCall = String.Format("setData('{0}','{1}')", Html.Encode(item.Associate), Html.Encode(item.ReviewDate )) ; %>
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick=functionCall } )%>

I have a form which a user can fill in x times with the data they want too. The form is posted to the following Action.
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Manage(ProductOptionModel DataToAdd)
{
if (!ModelState.IsValid)
{
return View(DataToAdd);
}
var ProdServ = new ProductService();
if (DataToAdd.ID != 0)
{
//Edit Mode.
DataToAdd = ProdServ.EditProductOption(DataToAdd);
ViewData["Message"] = "Option Changes Made";
}else
{
//Add
DataToAdd = ProdServ.AddProductOption(DataToAdd);
ViewData["Message"] = "New Option Added";
}
var RetModel = new ProductOptionModel() {ProductID = DataToAdd.ProductID};
return View(RetModel);
}
So at the bottom I blank the model (Leaving just the required field) and then return to the view. However the view holds the data from the previously submitted form. I have debugged the code and checked that the RetModel variable is empty.

I'm using the old 404-rewrite method on a certain site that is tied to IIS6 *. So if I enter [URL] it calls my error page like so [URL]
Except if I call the page with a fragment, like [URL] I get the same result as above. I can't find the fragment anywhere:
Request.Url
Request.Url.OriginalString
Request.UrlReferrer
Request.RawUrl
headers, server variables, etc
This has come up because I want to resolve paths created by AJAX to their server-side versions. Is there any way for me to retrieve the original path from my handler?

I have a page, URI looks like this:
http://domain.example.com/Profiles/Profile.aspx?username=blah#blahtab
When that fragment (#blahtab) is present, some jQuery picks up on that and displays a different section of the page initially. However, that page requires a user to authenticate first. Coming back from the authentication step using FormsAuthentication, the fragment is discarded, regardless of the UrlEncode step.
I don't see the fragment actually sent to the server when I use a debugger on my local machine. Is this standard fare and the fragment is only for the client side?How can I keep that tacked on without writing my own redirection code on the login page?
Alternately, should I use another method to preserve the view of the page?

I'm trying to get a Razor conditional to write a few characters into an HTML page, but I can't figure out the syntax to pass the text characters straight to the screen. This bit of code works correctly:
@{if(sortColumn=="BbConvTerm"){<p>ASDF</p>}}
But I don't want those <p></p> tags. I just want it to insert the "ASDF" characters into HTML. For example:[doesn't work] @{if(sortColumn=="BbConvTerm"){ASDF}} [doesn't work] @{if(sortColumn=="BbConvTerm"){new HtmlString("ASDF")}} [doesn't work] @{if(sortColumn=="BbConvTerm"){Html.Raw("ASDF")}}

In our .aspx pages we have user controls each control has a Sql query to fetch data. The caching mechanism to be followed says that fragment cache all the user controls and invalidate the cache based on the respective queries of the user control.How to proceed to add a query dependency to fragment cached user control?

Is there a way to retrieve the client side ID for a model property similar to how the helpers like LabelFor etc generate the ID? For example, I have a model with a DateOfBirth property. I want to hook up that field to a jQuery DatePicker. Normally, I would hook up the date picker like this:
[Code]....
This works fine but hard codes the DateOfBirth property name. Ideally, I would like to use this:
[Code]....
Is this already available out of the box somewhere? I just created an extension method on the HtmlHelper class that does exactly this, but I wondered if there was already something built-in so I don't have to reinvent and test the wheel.

I would like to exclude one of model's property from the Html.EditorFor. I tried [HiddenInput(DisplayValue=false)] but it renders the property as an hidden input. This could potentially be a security problem. How can we completely exclude a field from Html.EditorFor?

I have a RegisterModel view model I use for my new account registration page. Depending on the status of a registration task, the model has a relevant text message to display for the user, e.g. "Waiting for email confirmation" etc.
I currently populate this string property in the manner below, but couldn't help wondering about mixing markup and content like I do with the <p> tags. Is there a better or more accepted way of doing this, besides having multiple partial views with actual HTML literals instead of model properties?
RegisterMessage = "<p>Please use the form below to create a new account.</p>";
RegisterMessage = string.Format("<p>Passwords are required to be a minimum of {0} characters in length.</p>", _membershipService.MinRequiredPasswordLength);
EDIT: I have just noticed that the <p> tags are rendering literally, but I doubt that issue falls under the same question.

i am working an asp.net mvc 2 web app using model metadata and some of the model metadata don't seem to work when using the default Html.EditorForModel().For example, when applying the DefaultValue(1) and the ReadOnly(true) attributes on a model field, the field displayed on edit view has zero for its default value and it is not read only.

Currently, I am working with ASP.NET MVC1 and am still learning about Model Binding and how values from a View are passed back to the Controller / Model. Specifically, I want take an existing Model, create a Table and populate the Rows of the Table, allow the user to edit some fields and pass it back. In my example, I have a Class called "Ingredient" which has 4 public accessories: Name, Barcode, Amount, and Unit.
[Code]....
Or is this not possible? (Basically, I'm trying to re-create a datagrid where certain fields are editable and certain are not...)

I have implemented a custom ModelMetadataProvider so that I can decorate my view models with some custom attributes and everything was working fine until I made use of a Partial View. The following code in my view works fine: -
<%: Html.DisplayFor(x => x.Results) %>
Results is a List which renders a custom display template and is also decorated with a custom attribute. Using breakpoints, after the above line and prior to the code within the custom display template, the overridden CreateMetadata method in my custom ModelMetadataProvider is invoked. If I look at the attributes collection parameter I can see that it does contain my custom attribute thus everything working as expected. However, if I replace the above with the following line of code in my view then it breaks: -
<% Html.RenderPartial("ApplicationSearchResults", Model.Results, new ViewDataDictionary()); %>
All the Partial View contains is: -
<%: Html.DisplayFor(x => x) %>
Again using breakpoints, after the above line and prior to the code within the custom display template, the overridden CreateMetadata method in my custom ModelMetadataProvider is invoked. But this time if I look at the attributes collection parameter my custom attribute is not there.

Normally I work in ASP Classic, and am still a bit green on ASP.Net MVC.
I have my model with its fields or entities (might not be the right word hence why not able to find if previously answered, forgive me), and some of these will have null values such as hyperlinks, email address, specific types of phone numbers, etc.
What I want to do is not write certain blocks of HTML within the foreach loop if a field is empty.
In ASP Classic, I would have written an If statement along the lines of:
<% If RS.field <> NULL then %>HTML with <%=RS.field %><% End If %>
<% If RS.field2 <> NULL then %>HTML with <%=RS.field2 %><% End If %>
...
However, I don't know how to achieve the same result in ASP.Net MVC.In one of my current usages, a list of sellers returned for a specific set of search results, it runs through a foreach loop and returns the current HTML (in part):
Website: <a class="url" href="<%= seller.ContactWebsite %>" target="_blank" title="Visit the website for <%= seller.Name %>"><%= seller.ContactWebsite %></a><br />
So, if for example I have a field from the model, say seller.ContactWebsite, and this field was NULL, I would not want it to write this as part of the foreach loop.

I'm building an MVC 2 RTM app, and I want to be able to share my model across applications. I'd *like* to be able to implement it like:ASP.NET MVC2 app (holds Views and Controllers)Class library to hold Model(s)WCF app to handle the data transactions with the models via different data stores across apps I had the MVC app working fine, but I wanted to abstract the data stuff and be able to work with the model across apps through the WCF site, so I created a class library project and moved all of the Models classes into that and set-up a WCF app, then added project references to the MVC and WCF apps that point at the class library. The idea was I can create services that take and return objects from the model via method calls across apps. It appears that everything's wired up correctly in the MVC project, so I'm passing the objects stored in the Models class library between controllers and views and everythig is compiling just fine, but for some reason the data is not being passed back from the views to the controller on POST -- all of the properties in the classes are null or empty.
When I debug the app, I can see that the values are stored in the model data dictionary but not the model object itself. What am I doing wrong? Am I on the wrong path, or missing something obvious (to some)?
