MVC :: Create A Customized Dropdownlist Using "HtmlHelper" Extension Method?
Jun 8, 2010
i have defined a dropdown list in the controller
[Code]....
then i can show this dropdownlist in my "about" view <%=Html.DropDownList("a") %>.
BUT, now i want to define this dropdown list at my back end. what i want to do is to create a new "Helper".cs file in my project, and create a function within it. so every time if i want to show this dropdown list, i can just simply call this function instead of Add new SelectListItems one by one. is there anyone tell me how to do it?? and is it a good way to create a dropdownlist at the back end?

I would like to extend the HtmlHelper by using metadata (similar to DataAnnotaions metadata). Specifically I want to be able to add a 'Title' attribute to html controls that will then appear as a tooltip on the control. I would like to keep the tooltip text with my model, for example by adding 'Tiltle' metadata to the model as follows:
[DisplayName("User Id")]
[Title("Enter your 10 digit user id")]
property UserId { get; set; }
So the questions are:
1. How do I add metadata (such as 'Title') to my model?
2. How do I access this metadata in my HtmlHelper extension method?

I would like to know what the pros and cons are of creating an extension method v a partial view. From my understanding, htmlHelper extension methods are better as they enable one to unit test the view.
e.g. Assert.AreEqual(Html.Price(), "<td><tr><td>Price</td><td>4.50</td></tr>");
where the Price() method contains the presentation logic.
Since both the extension method and partial view are reusable, what then is the point / benefit of a partial view?

I know there is a ListBoxFor extension method among the ASP.NET MVC Html helper extension methods, but I always thought that a checkbox list is more user-friendly than a list box.
There was a very convenient CheckBoxList control in good old WebForms, but obviously that is out of the picture now. The question is, why is there no way in ASP.NET MVC to create a check box list? How can I write my own extension method that creates a check box list and behaves in a similar way ListBoxFor behaves?

Is something like the below possible?
public static T Sum<T>(this DataTable dt, string columnName)
where T : IEnumerable<decimal>, IComparable<decimal>[code]....
It feels like i'm almost there, but not quite :/
Just trying to sum up either decimal or int values in a column in datatable. Currently getting a compile error, however think this is due to the incorrect generic constraint.

I've created a very simple website with two roles, "administrator" and "employees". I've also added users using asp.net configuration wizard for both. My concern, however, is that going ahead it will not possible to use the wizard to add new roles, assign them or alter them once the site is online. I won't be the administrator and so I need to find a way for the administrator to add new roles and assign them to users from a remote connection. Where can I find some information on creating such forms?

I want to ask, does adding extension methods to datatypes works in the same way as Microsoft's methods or do they have any limitaion.
This is relevant to experienced programmers who had find some limitations while using them.

[Code]....
My question is: how can i create my own parameter based upon the QueryStringParameter?
Example:
[Code]....
I now called it QueryStringGuidParameter.
The purpose of this is: I'm not sending any querystring's via the aspx?querystring other thasn aspx?guid={guid identifier}.I hope my code below explains it al little bit.
[Code]....
A soon as a page Redirects f.i. with this example
[Code]....
Instead of calling Response.Redirect i call the Redirect i created. This transforms the querystring in a session with a guid and parameter. The Redirect only sends the guid in the querystring. and the receiving page picks up the guid and translates it back into a querystring.
Purpose is you have a secure way of dealing with info sending via querystrings. Lets say in the past you could easily get other info from the page by just changing a value in the key send via a querystring. In my case lets say the user request a Customer "A" with querystring ?ID=1.
Simple change the query in the addressbar to ?ID=2 (or something else) would give him another customer. Maybe a customer he is not allowed to see. (Of course this can be prevented also in the business layer, but that's not the point.)
So if i simply could create a new QueryStringParameter lets say called QueryStringGuidParameter which i can use in the ObjectDataSource but ideally just for all controllers which are able to use the QueryStringParameter , i don't have to go into code behind and set the SelectParameters in there.

I have written a smal HtmlHelper, but the thing is that I whould require some javascript functionallity to this helper. So I thought "Whouldnt it be great to actually let the framework add the javascript <script>-tag to the head-element of my Html document once I use this helper?"
So what I whould need/like to do is:
1. Add the Javascript-file as a resource to the dll, since this will allow me to always have the javascript file together with my HtmlHelper, so I dont need to have a seperate file for the js.
2. Add a <script src="{my js-resource}" /> to the head-element of my html document as soon as I use my helper...this is kind of the tricky part..since Im not realy sure about how to do this in MVC...if its even possible..the best sulotion whould be if I didnt need to add any other code in any other file then just in my HtmlHelper...(no code needed to be added in my views or controls) To put it all kind of simple...from what I recall..I want to more or less register a start up script, as its called in WebForms..but in MVC..(I saw an example of how to do it ClientScriptManager, but that whould require me to add extra code on my views and layout/masterpage-files...which simply doesnt do it for me if there is any other way)

I recently found out about C# extension methods and wrote this one:
/// <summary>
/// Short-hand for setting the data source and binding it.
/// </summary>
/// <param name="me">The control to set and bind the data source of.</param>
/// <param name="dataSource">The data source.</param>
public static void BindTo(this DataBoundControl me, IEnumerable dataSource)
{
me.DataSource = dataSource;
me.DataBind();
}
What do you guys think? Is this a reasonable extension method to use in a professional ASP.NET project?

I have the following Extension Method
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Namespace Extensions
Public Module IntegerExtensions
<Extension()>
Public Function ToCommaDeliminatedNumber(ByVal int As Integer) As String
Dim _input As String = int.ToString
Select Case int
Case Is > 99999 : Return _input.Remove(_input.Length - 3) & "k"
Case Is > 9999 : Return Math.Round(Double.Parse(int / 1000), 1).ToString & "k"
Case Is > 999 : Return String.Format("{0:N0}", int)
Case Else : Return _input
End Select
End Function
End Module
End Namespace
And in one of my classes I'm using user.Reputation.ToCommaDeliminatedNumber I am importing the Extensions Namespace into the Class, but the error I'm getting is...'ToCommaDeliminatedNumber' is not a member of 'Integer?'. I do have other Extension Methods for Strings and Dates that work exactly as expected... I'm just at a loss on this one.

I just like to know how can i create my own authentication(calling the ASP .net membership, role) page with the same function as the LOGIN Control. Your wondering, why not use the Login control instead. I have my own design and i don't know how to pattern my design to the built in Login Control. I tried editing the login template, but it's pretty hard to pattern it to my design.
This is my design
Basically what would like to know how the Login Control calls for the authentication, and when authenticated, it will pass the user(full name) to my LoginView Control without any coding. Or is it possible that I remove default login button in the LOGIN Control then create my own button and trigger the authentication or validation? But if you have other suggestion that can follow my design and call the authentication, i would be happy to know.

I am stuck with the database row level security model that my predecessor has implemented on this project. I am trying to make an extension method for my linq to sql classes to make it easier to filter rows of data in my linq queries. The problem I am facing is that I need to somehow tell it how to access the primary key value of the object in the where clause. I get errors about DynamicInvoke(object[]) cant be converted to SQL. Here is a sample of what I am working with:
[Code]....
How do I do this?

I am using the Directory.GetFiles method as follows:

As expected, it returns files with the ".pdf" extension. I would like to be able to specify more than one extension (like "*.doc*" and "*.txt*", etc.). How can I use GetFiles to return files with more than one desired extension, without returning all files?

I'm binding an object to a gridview. The object (LeClient) consists of several variables, two of which are related to its phone number. One variable contains a string of digits (LePhone) and the other contains an int that represents the country code (LeCountryCode). I have an extension method for strings that works to format the string LePhone and that I'd like to pass it LeCountryCode as the parameter.
So far, on RowDataBound I have an event handler with the following line:
e.Row.Cells[5].Text = (string)(e.Row.Cells[5].Text).ToPhoneFormat(1);
I'd like to replace the 1 with the corresponding country code that's stored in the object LeClient associated with the row. How does this work? I tried
.ToPhoneFormat(e.Row.DataItem("LeCountryCode"));

Inside my repeater I'm calling an extension method like so:
[Code]....
he above is giving me an "Object not set to an instance of a object" exception inside the extension method. If I comment the above expression out, it works fine, and the items are binded wtih no problems.
