I need to run a method before my 90% of the views in my project run. I thought about adding the code to the _ViewStart.cshtml file, but this rule does not apply to all views. If I could subclass the view class then I could base my views on that class.

I'm trying to have all my views inherit from a custom class so that I can add certain behaviour and values to all pages, but I'm having some issues. I tried subclassing System.Web.Mvc.WebViewPage but I'm forced to implement an Execute procedure that I don't know what it should do. Also, if I try to access the Context variable, I get a null reference (really weird). This leads me to think that I may have the wrong base class.

We have a modular architecture where we have some views (cshtml) files in a separate project (class library). How can we get the syntax highlighting and autocomplete to work when the project isn't an MVC project?
note that the class library has controllers, views, models etc. It just doesn't have the web.config, global.asax, etc that a normal mvc project would have.

In my controller method, I'm trying to create an instance of a View (cshtml file) before I wrap it around an ActionResult and return it.Since there is no "class" for Razor Views to speak off, how does one go about creating an instance of a Razor View?

Do I create a normal View and calling the PartialView() in the controller will only output the body content and when calling View() in the controller will output the full page with layout. If not, do I need to create specific Partial Views and then use RenderPartial in the View.

View 6 RepliesI have looked all over for elegant solutions to this not so age-old question. How can I lock down form elements within an ASP.Net MVC View, without adding if...then logic all over the place? Ideally the BaseController, either from OnAuthorization, or OnResultExecultion, would check the rendering form elements and hide/not render them based on role and scope. Another approach I have considered is writing some sort of custom attributes, so as to stay consistent with how how we lock down ActionResults with [Authorize]. Is this even possible without passing a list of hidden objects to the view and putting if's all over? Other background info: We will have a database that will tell us at execution time (based on user role/scope) what elements will be hidden. We are using MVC3 with Razor Viewengine. We're utilizing a BaseController where any of the Controller methods can be overridden.

I have a repeater control that generates a dynamic menu in an unordered list format. I have given each <li> item an id that includes a value from my database to make them unique:

One of the values that gets added to my list ids will match my querystring, making it the current page. So therefore I would like to highlight this to the user by changing the css class of the relevant li element. In my code behind I have created a string variable that takes the querystring value and modifies it to match the id. So for example my variable is "category7" - and I also have an li item on my page with an id of "category" How would I go about matching these two things in my VB and adding a class to the li element where the id = my variable.
I have a .aspx page where i copied 1 navigation bar. On it i put some link buttons. They are navigating. But when I click it's class should become Active <li class="active">Home</li>. If i click on register link button then register's class should become active.

I have a database table called Animals which I drag on to my Linq to SQL DBML file.
This creates me a class called Animal.
I then create a class to extend it, like so:
public partial class Animal{
//my extra code here
}
But what I also want to do is have a class like this:
public class Zebra : Animal{
//even more extra code here
}
The trouble is I get an InvalidCastException from my repository, when I do this:
Animal a = dataContext.Animals.Where(c=>c.id.Equals(id)).SingleOrDefault();
return (Zebra)a;
I've stripped back my classes to the point where they're completely empty in an attempt to work why it doesn't work. To no avail.
This casting process did used to work in the non-LINQ-2-SQL project that I'm switching to MVC/LINQ.

View 6 Replieshave gone through the N2 CMS documentation at length and can see no obvious set of steps to accomplish this.The task is to create a new Web Forms CMS app based on N2. Basically to take the Stripes theme and customize it.I originally downloaded the full source code and got it working on my development machine with SQL Server. After this I made various attempts at copying the files necessary to run the application into the new Web Forms folder in wwwroot. I got a lot of the same runtime errors that I see others getting, relating to missing DLLs, browser control adapters, and the like.
My current approach, per the "howto_install.txt", is to use the Publish function to move the required files to my wwwroot folder. This is really not desirable if I want to work on CMS sites for three different clients - think about it. Either way, when I bring up the new site in the wwwroot folder now, the home page link on the home page, all image links, and all admin links are now broken (this happened after moving site to IIS7). The install document mentions copying the "N2 management files" to the new folder - can anyone explain what is meant by this?Can anyone assist in outlining the basic steps in getting a new Web Forms N2 site working with full functionality in the wwwroot folder?

Then do I name the procedure and put it in the class? Or create a new class for each procedure? Then I would want to, on a local level, substitue values for A & B to return C. So, if the public procedure exists, how to I call it? I know that this is really simple stuff, but I need examples to be simple.

my problem is that I can't seem to pass the information captured from the query to the page. I get problems such as can't convert string type to literal and I need to declare a new keyword to an object.
