Making A Build That Removes Source CS Files
Nov 22, 2010
How to make a build in VS 2010 within an ASP.NET MVC application that would remove all of the source code (CS and VB) files? When I build a website or web app I usually copy the contents of the entire solution to the hosting server. Mostly clients get the source but sometimes I do not want to expose the source to the hosting server thus only the Public (or Content) folder, views, masters and the built DLL should be copied.
Manual solutions are not applicable. What do you guys use?

I tend to use a lot of commenting in my code. All these comments slow down the page rendering.
What I'm looking for is a script of some sort that goes through all aspx and cs pages in my web project and removes the commenting.
Note
In aspx pages I use commenting like this:
<%--
and
<!--
in cs pages I use
//
sometimes this
/*
Hope to get some easy and nice tips/scripts.

Is there any way that I can make it so that to use a "Production" publish profile, it would require that the build configuration was set to Release?
I believe you're supposed to be able to customize the profiles with add-ons or something...?

I've got a solution that contains several projects. There is a main exe project which I'll call MyProj.exe that references several other projects which reference yet other projects in the solution. Additionally a few projects in the solution are not in MyProj's reference chain and aren't regularly built. There is 1 project (a class library project) named Payment which is giving me a particularly hard time. The two of MyProj's references have a project reference to Payment.dll. So the reference heirarchy looks like this:
- MyProj.exe
- Transactions
- Payment
- Accounts
- Payment
When I right click MyProj in the Solution Explorer and choose Build, everything works fine, but when I choose Rebuild, I get the following results:
Payment.dll is deleted but never rebuilt. It doesn't exist in the output directory MyProj.manifest in the output directory doesn't have a reference to Payment.dll. (What is this file? I don't remember normally seeing it in other project's the output directories.) 19 of the project .pdb files are deleted and not rebuilt This is a big problem for me because this is a ClickOnce application and when I'm publishing, Payment.dll isn't getting included in my deployment which is a problem I suspect is closely related.

Create a control 'ClassName' in file ClassName.cs. Path is c:ProjectWebuserControlsControlTypeClassName.cs
[code]...
The really bizarre thing is that the error is inconsistent.Sometimes the project builds, sometimes some files break the build, sometimes others do, sometimes all of them do.

I'd like to add build configuration dependant web config files to my empty ASP.NET 4 Web site project. How can I do that? According to this blog entry, VS 2010 is supposed to provide a context menu entry on the original web.config file, Add Config Transform, allowing to add build configuration dependant web.config files to the project. But this context menu entry doesn't exist. What did I do wrong?
Steps to reproduce:
Create an empty ASP.NET 4 Web site project on localhost (IIS)

I have a web application that has some non-web projects as well. When using Web Deployment, a single assembly is generated for all the aspx.vb files. When using Team Build (TS 2008), a lot number App_Web_xxx.dll file(s) are generated instead of a single assembly. How can i solve this problem and change the TFSBuild.proj file so that it can generate a single Web Assembly instead of a lot number of assemblies.
I guess thats because the MERGE operation is not occurring like it used to happen for Web Deployment Project in my solution. How can i enable MERGE of App_web_*.dll files into a single Web.dll assembly file and delete the satellite assemblies? Here is my code from TFSBuild.proj file: (MY web project is in Release|.NET Config and all other projects within the solution are in Release|Any CPU)
<Target Name="AfterBuild">
<PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Debug|.NET' ">
<DebugSymbols>true</DebugSymbols>
<OutputPath>.Debug</OutputPath>
<EnableUpdateable>true</EnableUpdateable>
<UseMerge>true</UseMerge>
<SingleAssemblyName>Web</SingleAssemblyName>
<DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>true</DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>
</PropertyGroup>
<PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|.NET' ">
<DebugSymbols>false</DebugSymbols>
<OutputPath>.Release</OutputPath>
<EnableUpdateable>true</EnableUpdateable>
<UseMerge>true</UseMerge>
<SingleAssemblyName>Web</SingleAssemblyName>
<DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>true</DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>
</PropertyGroup>
</Target>

I am currently attempting to use Visual Studio 2010 'Publish' and MSDeploy functionality to handle my web deployment needs but have run into a roadblock with regards to customizing the package depending on my build configuration.
I develop in a 32bit environment but need to create a release package for a 64bit environment, so in the 'Release' configuration I have a post build event that copies the 64bit version of a third-party dll into the bin directory overwriting the 32bit version. When I use the 'Publish' functionality, even though the correct 64bit dll is being copied to the bin directory, it doesn't get included in the package.
Is there a way to get the 'Publish' to include files that have been copied into the bin directory during a post build event?

I am having difficulty using C in the VS IDE. No matter what I write the code always has errors and I am not able to see the end result. I don't understand VS and being that I am supposed to be taking Programming in C as a class, it is hard for me to get my work done because I don't understand VS and I really don't know how to match the two up.

I was wondering if there are any free/OS resx files for phrases commonly used among websites. For instance, we all use save/submit/retry/cancel/etc. and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a library out there with these standard phrases in multiple languages.

You've probably noticed that when you debug an error which comes from an ASPX or ASCX file (literally, not from a corresponding code-behind file), ASP.NET displays an error page showing you the source file and the line on which the error occurs. The source file being displayed is automatically generated from parsing the page/control. The question is: how can I see this source file without purposely causing an exception?
I'd love to hear that there is some programmatic way (the complexity doesn't matter) to generate source files (preferrably, .cs) from a series of ASPX/ASCX files.
Example. Consider the following ASPX page (the code-behind file may even be absent):
<%@ Page Language="C#"%>
<%@ Register Assembly="AspxGen" Namespace="AspxGen" TagPrefix="ag" %>
<html>
<head><title>Some Title</title></head>
<body>
[Code]....
d:DevAspxGenAspxGenDefault.aspx(9,80): error CS0103: The name 'ThereIsNoSuchProperty' does not exist in the current context
This means, theoretically I can open the .CS files passed to the compiler (namely, App_Web_sqj3krv3.0.cs and App_Web_sqj3krv3.1.cs) and see what ASP.NET has generated from my ASPX markup. Trying to rephrase the previous question: how can I obtain this file from an arbitrary ASPX file (assuming that the file is correct and hence no info will be given on where to search)?

When I use Project Reference to add dependent assemblies to my C# library project, I can use the "Go To Definition" popup menu item to go to the source file of the class defined in the dependent assembly. That is one of the most useful features of VS for me. However, when I add dependent assemblies as BIN References (via the Browse tab of the Add Reference dialog), I only get the class definition generated from metadata of the dependenat assembly, not the source file.
I realize that intellisense can't find the source directory of the dependent assembly, but where can I enter the directories so intellisense would know? There is a "VC++ Directories" page in the Options->Projects and Solutions dialog, but that is only for C/C++ projects. There should be one for C# as well. The bigger mystery is when I put my project in the debugger, I can step into methods defined in the dependent assembly and see its source file. Why could the debugger find the source file but not intellisense?

I was merging my web.config file and one I downloaded for open source forums, as it told me to. I copied the different lines myself, but now I'm getting three compile errors in my file.
Here are the errors:
1- The 'compliation' start tag on line 47 does not match the end tag of 'system.web'. Line 205, position 4.
2- Tag was not closed. (On line 47, column 4)
3- Expecting end tag </compilation>. (On line 205, column 3)
I'll also post my web.config file below.

I have had a persistant problem, which occurs in "Visual Web Developer 2008" express, but also in "Visual Studio 2010"
When I drop a data control onto my webpage, and the select "Configure Data Source", the dialog box opens, but when I try and browse for the data file (could be MDB or XLS) the data file does not appear in the "Select (XML/MDB) file" - in the example below a XML file. If I set the filter to "All Files (*.*)" I can see all of the files EXCEPT the XML files.
The project is a web project, and is set to HTTP - using my local IIS.

I'm a student doing final year of my Computer Science and Engineering. For my final year project i've choosen to do an online word processor such as google docs,zoho etc.I want to implement this project in .net. This will be a ajax oriented project and i'm well prepared with the web related part of it with ASP.net and C#.net at the server end and HTML,Javascript at the front end. But the point where i'm struck up is:
-> How can i create, edit and add MS Word features to a .doc file using VB.net or C#.net??
-> .net Library classes that will be helpful for me to create word related components as .doc files i.e how to create word using .net?
-> How can i convert a .doc file to HTML file to display it on a web browser?
-> In brief tell me how to create a word processor so that i'll be able to create it online.

I have an AJAX NumericUpDown Control that takes a decimal. If I put in 1.30, it removes the zero. I do not want to remove the zero, it must remain at 1.30.
A demo of this can be found here: [URL]
For example, enter 1.30 in the text box then tab out or click somewhere else. The zero is removed.

I have a question regarding a situation that occurs with GridView, ObjectDataSource in ASP .NET application. The GridView is linked to the ObjectDataSource and both are included within an UpdatePanel letting the GridView to fill in an asynchronous way from a form in the same page so it gets more rows as the user enters the data:
<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
</asp:ScriptManager>
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="Name" HeaderText="Name" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Name" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Periodicty" HeaderText="Periodicty" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Periodicty" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server"
SelectMethod="GetSessionNames" TypeName="Simulation"></asp:ObjectDataSource>
<asp:Label ID="Label27" runat="server" Text="Label"></asp:Label>
</ContentTemplate>
<Triggers>
<asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="NewWebSessionButton" EventName="Click" />
</Triggers>
</asp:UpdatePanel>
I start the project with Visual Studio 2008, fill the form and it works correctly. Then I stop the execution: rerun again and the data I entered in the previous run is in the GridView. Is like some sort of cache saved the data from the session before. I checked that EnableCaching property is set to false for the ObjectDataSource. If I Rebuild Web Site in Visual Studio (not just Build) then it works corretly leaving the GridView empty. Is this caused just becuase of Visual Studio? Can it be turned off? And will it happen in the final IIS it will run on?

I have an ASHX handler or an ASPX page (the problem happens in both cases).
The web client sends a request containing If-None-Match and/or If-Modified-Since headers but context.Request.Headers.Get("If-None-Match") or context.Request.Headers.Get("If-Modified-Since") is null in the handler.
The same script works in my local development machine but it doesn't work in the online machine (both are running IIS7 on Win 2008, .NET 3.5)
