Mapping A Class To A Custom Page Extension?
Mar 3, 2010
What I would like to have is a mapping between a custom file extension to a class that is not System.Web.UI.Page but a class of mine that inherits from System.Web.UI.Page.
i.e.:
*.aspx -> System.Web.UI.Page
*.my -> My.Package.MyClass (inherits from System.Web.UI.Page)
I know I can map any extension to be treated like .aspx but I can't find the way to do what I have in mind.

What are some unintended consequences associated with mapping an ASP.NET HTTP Handler to a static extension like *.css?
<add verb="*" path="handler.css" type="Web.HttpHandler.ThemeCssHandler" />
By default, *.css is registered as static content in applicationHost (under IIS7):
<staticContent lockAttributes="isDocFooterFileName">
<mimeMap fileExtension=".css" mimeType="text/css" />
Aren't static requests normally handled more efficiently by IIS alone?
The key motivation is really to have dynamic CSS served under its known extension as opposed to something like *.axd (for simplicity and compatibility with OOTB cache policies); but we'd like to make sure this doesn't degrade the service of non-dynamic CSS requests.

I'm still trying to resolve a problem with relative links on a page that uses URL routing. The relative links work find when running from Visual Studio, but fail when deployed to a shared hosting account.I'm told that the difference is that Development Server handles all requests through ASP.NET handler but IIS7 doesn't. The result is that URLs with no extension are considered folders on my test machine, and filenames on the shared hosting account. That breaks the relative links.
It was suggested that I do wildcard mapping to IIS7. But I can't make random changes to the shared server machine. I also have concerns about routing everything through IIS, graphics files, style sheets, javascript files, etc. In addition, I also tried adding a <base> tag, which fixed this issue but broke other links on the page.
So I'm left with two questions.
1. If IIS isn't processing files without an extension, then how does my routed page display as an ASP.NET page?
2. What I'd really like to do is specify in my web.config that all files with no extension be handled the way they're handled when running from Visual Studio. I don't suppose that's possible.

I am trying to add page with custom extension, say .asp2 with my set of html tags.Now whenever i try to access the page on browser...it asks me "Save as". This happens because I am using an extn which the server is not able to recognise.What should I do to so that my server, IIS 5.1 recognises this extension??
how to associate custom events on such custom page?

I have an interesting scenario. Here is what I want to do:1. Map all requests to a custom IHttpHandlerFactory implementation. This is easy enough to do by setting up a * mapping.2. Have requests for .aspx though still go through the default PageHandlerFactory (I think that is what it is called), basically be handled as normal.Is this possible in ASP.NET 4 using IIS 7?My use case is that we are building an RESTful application of sorts that will be serving data back in different formats based on the file extension specified on the url. So for example .xml will be an xml format of the data while html serves an html format.We are using an MVC framework to accomplish this and have this piece all figured out.

how to use class extensions with Views?
I'm using VB.Net, Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and developing an ASP.MVC 2 application.
I have an module that defines some extensions to the String class. In a WinForm application, I would simply use a Imports statement to include my String extension module into my class. But, in Views, the compiler complains when I try doing that.

What is the best way to go about creating a custom framework for asp.net?
We have several enterprise level asp.net ecommerce websites all running from completely seperate code bases. What I'd like to do is standardise the common components (session management/urlrewriting/surge control etc) and integrate them into the .net framework at the highest level possible and in a way that my developers cannot (easily) make changes.
I've considered creating a common assembly and just referencing that in each of the solutions but this still relies on the developer wiring up the httphandlers/modules and implementing the basepage design pattern for each individual page/masterpage.

I'd like to inherit all my controllers from a custom base class that I write myself. I can change the line every time I add a new controller, but it would be nicer if I could somewhere specify the default value that gets set there. That way I wouldn't need to worry about forgetting this, and other people who get added to the project later on would have an easier time.

I'm building an n-tier application, with the web client and the class library separate. I'm also using the factory pattern of development, using interfaces to act as containers for different objects they are associated with. The problem I'm expreriencing is that I declared a public interface class in the class library and I can create an instance of it in in my aspx pages but whenever I declare it in my custom control code-side, i get an error, like so:
Error 20 The type or namespace name 'IContentMaker' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
notge that I have inherited the class library namespace using the 'using' keyword just in case you are wondering. My code is like so:
using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts;
using System.Xml.Linq;
using TQO_Classes ; //importing the class library project
public partial class PageContentMgr : System.Web.UI.UserControl
{
private IContentMaker _data; //this line throws the error, it works fine on aspx pages

I have created my own custom role provider class "SGI_RoleProvider" and configured properly.
Everything is working fine.
Suppose that I have added a public method say "SayHello()", then how can i call that. Because if i am using Roles then the method is not displayed. If i am forcefully using that Roles.SayHello() then compiler gives the error.
how can i call this. Because creating a new instance of SGI_RoleProvider is meaningless.

I want my site visitors to be able to navigate to a page without having to type the .aspx extension. For example, if I have a page file named info.aspx I want site visitors to be able to go to that page with a URL like this: www.mysite.com/info without the aspx extension. Is there a way to do this in the web.config file?

Is it possible to do something like this inline in an ASPX page?
<%= Me.SomeExtensionMethod() %>
I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work properly. I'm receiving an error saying that "SomeExtensionMethod" is not a member of the current Page object. I've added the necessary <%@ Import Namespace="..." %> directive at the top of my page. This Does work in code-behind.This isn't vitally important, but it would be good to know how to do in the future.
