Passing Data To Server And Updating Asynchronously?

Jul 31, 2010

Basically I have a site where I want the user to input something, have it go to the server for processing and then return it asynchronously, load the contents into a div and then fade it in with jQuery. What is the best way to the do accomplish this?

Currently here is my "solution":

$(document).ready(function () {
$('#output-box').hide();
$('#form1').submit(function () {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "Default.aspx/ParseData",
data: "{ $('#txtInput').val() }",
success: function (msg) {
$('#output-box').text(msg).fadeIn();
}
});
return false;
});
});

It doesn't work - just returns the contents of Default.aspx. So how do I properly send the contents of #txtInput to the ParseData function in Default.aspx.vb? Also, is this the best way to accomplish something like this? Should I even need to use jQuery to send the data, or should I simply call the function and have it grab the data server-side, put in the information in the result div, and then show it using jQuery?

Web Forms :: Updating Client Side Controls Asynchronously From Service Calls

Oct 8, 2010

I am trying to update client side controls asynchronously with information from a service.

The service I am using has a callback delegate that points to the users web page (server side)

I would like to update information on the page that is initiated by another users also consuming the same service. exactly like a chatroom.

I am trying to use an update panel, and call updatepanel.update() (server side) once I recieve the information from the service. basically: how do I partially update control data from the server side so that client side can see it.

Architecture :: WCF Integration - Running Server.Execute Asynchronously?

Mar 30, 2010

I need to run the HttpContext.Current.Server.Execute method in my ASP.NET application. This application has a WCF operation that does some processing. Currently, I am running a Server.Execute call from within my WCF operation and getting the results I would expect. However, I would like to do this asynchronously.This is where my problem comes in. In an error to run Server.Execute asynchronously, I tried running Server.Execute in the DoWork event handler of a BackgroundWorker. Unfortunately, this throws an error that says

"object reference not set to an instance of an object"

The HttpContext element is not null. I checked that. It is some property nested in the HttpContext object that appears to be null. However, I have not been able to identify why this won't work. It happens as soon as I move the processing to the BackgroundWorker thread. My question is, how can I asynchronously execute the Server.Execute method? Are there options beyond BackgroundWorker that will work?

How To Execute Web Services Asynchronously In Server Side When Called By JQuery's .ajax

Mar 22, 2011

I have an ASP.NET (3.5) web page which calls a few web methods (SOAP based) using jQuery's .ajax method. The web methods implement 'ScriptMethod' attribute and return JSON data. The web service file (asmx) is local to the same project.

I noticed these web methods execute synchronously on the server which means they run sequentially and affect performance negatively, some methods are waiting, when some of them are slow.

I read this article and I am not sure if I understand that WebMethods which implement Scriptmethod can run synchronously only (they implement IHttpHandler not IHttpAsyncHandler).

If this is true, I might have to change the design. I am looking for other designs, maybe like using WCF, where the browser can call webmethods using JavaScript and the web methods run asynchronously on the server.

SQL Server :: Best Way To Handle Constantly Updating Data?

Sep 27, 2010

I'm building a browers-based game that will need to constantly be updating EVERYONE'S accounts regularly; what is the best way to go about doing this? Creating a process that runs every time someone goes to a page on my site slows down the load time immensely. Do I need to create a windows scheduled task that calls this/these process(es)? It will need to constantly run.

MVC :: Auto Updating View While Processing Data On Server?

Jul 15, 2010

I'm quite new to MVC, and only now i got hands-on with Ajax and Jquery as well.I've been reading a lot on blogs and forums, but can't seem to find the exact answer to my question.Here's what i want to do:1) Simple file manager View, where user can upload the file2) After successfully uploading, user is redirected to other View3) Meanwhile, the server starts processing the info existing on the file just uploaded. I want to be able to update the View the user is viewing, with the actions that are being performed on the server. Example (like stages): Reading File, Converting File, Parsing File, etc...4) When all stages are completed, i can show the user some buttons or whatever (until then, he has access to nothing...just view the page changing and processing)So....First, is this feasible?If so, how?I tried many approaches with AsyncController but can't seem to achieve nothing good.

Possible To Bind Data Asynchronously Between Two Dropdownlists In A View?

Mar 23, 2010

I'd like to achieve the following effect using ASP.NET MVC and JQuery. I've got a drop down list displaying a list of Countries. I want to make it so that when I change the value of the country, a new drop down list appears below it, showing a list of companies whose country of origin is the particular selected company. The thing is that I do not want to rely too much on controller actions because I'm using it in a Template Helper which is a "headless" view. Can I bind it somehow?

DataSource Controls :: System.Data.Datatable Updating SQL Server Image Field

Jul 1, 2010

I have a datatable for which i'm defining a dataadapter. I'm specifying an updatecommand with sqlparameters for the dataadapter I set the updatecommand's parameters using the following overload:

[Code]....

The length 16 is used because this is the length of the field according to sql (the image datafield is a pointer of size 16) I noticed .Net is actually truncating the string because of the length i'm setting. An image of size 3kb will properly upload if we set the length field to be greater than 3kb The question I have is what is the proper value (or strategy) to use in order to set for the length field so that ALL images will properly update to the database, with each using the appropriate size.

I guess i could theoretically set the length to be maxint, but this seems sloppy. Looking at sqlparameter documentation i didnt see an 'unlimited' or 'default' length i could set, which would allow each update statement called to use the appropriate size for the data length for that row.

Forms Data Controls :: Strange SqlDataSource Behaviour Updating GridView On Server Vs Development Machine?

Jun 10, 2010

I'm having a strange problem - probably has a simple answer but, I haven't been able to find it or figure out the cause. I'm hoping someone has had this same problem and figured it out.

Basically - my application works great on the development machine. So I copy it over to the server and it works great. Come back the next day and my GridView is only displaying the first record...I then log into the server remotely and open the web page on the server and all records are returned, so the application works fine on the server. I then return to the local machine and now the application is returning all rows in the GridView. So, weird but, what whatever, it works. Go away and come back again the next day and...

1 ) Only 1 record from dataset is displayed in GridView

2 ) Log onto server remotely and view webpage on server --> all records now display

3 ) Try again on local machine, now application works fine...grr. What am I doing wrong here? Using Visual Web Developer 2008 on Windows XP. Querying SQL Server 2000 (I know, I should switch to 2005 and use VWD 2010 - but ouch, really!) when a text box value changes (Vendor_PO_TextBox.TextChanged)

[Code]....

Updating SQL Server Database With SQL Scripts?

Mar 19, 2010

I have a number of manually written scripts (.sql) for tables, views and stored procedures that are used from an ASP.NET application. These scripts drop the object and recreates them. I need a way to update the database when the scripts change without deleting the object. For example, when a column is added to an existing table that has rows in it, I would need to update this table with this extra column without losing the rows.

I need a way to "update" the database on a single click (I can hook up the changes using a batch file). Does Visual Studio support this kind of functionality?
