Proper Way To Populate Dropdownlist Based Off Another Value?

I'm running into a minor issue with some ASP.Net code I'm working on. For simplicity sake lets say I have two dropdownlists, one that is full of various items and another that is full of other items, but based off the selected item of the first dropdownlist. I currently set variables into hidden inputs to check to see if the item in the first dropdownlist has changed and if it has to change the second dropdownlist, but I'm also having to check to make sure that if something else causes a postback to NOT repopulate the second dropdownlist as to not lose what is currently selected by the user. This check also allows me to make sure that when I navigate away from the page, the correct values are selected and not something replaced by a postback repopulation.
I'm new to ASP.Net/HTML/CSS/Javascript and the like. I know while what I have works, it isn't even close to being the correct way to do things. correct my ways and figure out the BEST way to solve this current problem. Some good ASP.Net tutorial websites would be nice too as I need to keep improving my skills with it.
there is a radio button, a dropdownlist. radiobuttons are OY, OTY,VDA ( in my database there are fields named OY.OTY,VDA) if i select OY in my radio button the data should be displayed from field OY in dropdownlist and if i select OTY in my radio button the data should be displayed from OTY field in dropdownlist is it possible. there is a sqldatasource for dropdownlist .

I need to bind my dropdownlist to my dataset that is returning application specific text values. But for purposes on that page, i need to assign the value to each one starting at 0 to the number of items returned from my dataset..
Example, if my dataset only returns 1 item, the value of that item needs to be 0

If my dataset returns 4 items, the value of those items needs to be 0 thru 3

Is it possible to assign values like that to a dropdownlist from the code behind?
I have dynamically popute the data in Dropdownlist(Countries) and the On selected index event of Dropdownlist there is noeed to bind /populate the Checkbox list from database depending on the selections made from the Dropdownlist.
For example If I select Gujrata then all the cities of Gujrat should be visible and bounded to the check box list.
2) Once the checkbox list is bounded with data from the database, We need to select the checkbox from the checkboxlist and pass tyhe selected text of all the selected checkboxes fro the checkbox list as comma seperated values to database and then I need to Display in the Grid.

it is possible to customize the typed view generation process to generate the proper controls based on the fields annotations of a model. For Example I have a Person Model that contains Foreign Keys like CityID,DepartmentID etc. So When i generate a view againt the Person Model it creates textbox's for all the Person fields but i want dropdownlists against FK fields. It Should be smart enough to at least geereate the peroper controls based on the Person's field annotations. How can i acheive that? Has anybody worked on that?
I am having trouble with DropDownList (and/or DropDownListFor) when using TemplateInfo's HtmlFieldPrefix in a strongly-typed view. DropDownList properly selects the value from the model when the prefix hos not been site. Once I set the value of HtmlFieldPrefix, the value from the model is not selected in the drop-down list.
I am using .NET 3.5SP1 and ASP.NET MVC 2 RC2.

I have a FormView with the ItemTemplate and InsertItemTemplate populated. In the InsertItem template, What I am trying to do is that when a user click on the DropDownList and selects the item from the list that they want, it Populates to a TextBox.
I have tried the SelectedIndexChanged event however It does not seem to fire the event.

I have 2 dropdownlist, one is to dropdown department, and another dropdown staffnames. the secong dropdownlist will based on the selection of department as each department has different staffs i have 2 tables department and staff in my database , in my department table i have departmentid as PK and departmentname, in my staff table i have staffname and departmentid as FK. I am having a problem with disabling DropDownList based on the chice of 1st DropDownList, there is no post back occuring, and it is a template based web app here is the current code:

I am trying to develop a simple MVC 2 timesheet application for my small business. I have a sort of mock model for now until I have a database in place, just to make things simpler while I develop the functionality.

But then I need to populate a second dropdownlist (taskDropDownList for the tasks associated with a particular customer) based on the selection the user chooses in the customer dropdownlist. But how do I do this exactly? I have seen examples with jQuery, but I'm not sure how to apply them to this situation. Also, the examples seem to just populate the lists with string values. I need to be able to access the objects with all their properties. Because the next thing I need to do is to be able to populate the TimeSegments list of the selected task with values from input fields (i.e. the hours worked for particular dates). And for that to be saved to the "model" (eventually to the database) in the controller, how do I get it there, unless the objects are all part of the same model bound to the View? I'm on rather thin ice with this since I still find the connection between the View and the Controller hard to handle, compared with e.g. Windows development, where these things are rather easy to do.
I am making an application that deals with vehicles. I need two DropDownLists:
Makes: All Vehicle Makes Models: Models that belong to the selected value of the Make DropDownList
How is this done in MVC2? My Idea: Do I use an ajax call when my first list is selected and then pull back the Models to bind to the Model DDL? How would model binding come into play that way? UPDATE I posted what I ended up doing as an answer. It is super simple and works great. You can use a get too if you feel so inclined, but you have to specify that you want to like so... return Json(citiesList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet);
I'm currently working on a Web Site application project that requires a treeview to be heirarchically structured based on the attribute ids of each node rather than the format of the XML.

At present the above is lining up all names under each other, I would like the hierarchy to be based on the attribute parentid and Id. For example: Jane Smith should be a child of Joe smith and Bob Turner is a Child of Jane Smith.
I m trying to populate a set of 3 textboxes based on a value entered into the first textbox. So when a user enters a value in the first textbox, i would like them to be able to tab out of it and it will automatically populate the remaining textboxes.

I have been using the following tutorial and had to convert the code to C# for my project, now i cant get the code to work, im getting red line under the word "in" in the UpdateRolesFromList, i tried to add a datasource on page load for the checkboxlist like so RoleList.DataSource = PopulateRoleList(User.Identity.Name.ToString());and gives me error saying cannot implictly convert type 'void' to 'object' [URL]What am i missing, that when i load the page or even do a search it never displays the checkbox list as it shows in the tutorial?

As per ListBox Items a data should show in GridView by using UP and Down arrow keys. I tried by using Oonselectedindexchanged but when a page loads from listbox the cursor become active to inactive.
I have a WebDataGrid linked to a SqlDataSource to display data. When a row is selected, I want to populate some textboxes and dropdownlists with the data from that row, for editing purposes. The textboxes work fine; I use the following code to select the second field in the grid (Date) and populate the corresponding textbox (I'm using VB): txtDate.Text = currentRow.Items(2).Value However, when I try to populate the dropdownlists using the same code structure, I get the following error:
'ddlType' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.
I think the problem may be that the dropdownlists are populated using type_id, while the grid displays type_name. Would this be causing the problem, and is there a way to get around this?
I have a very long list of items for a dropdownlist. As the list is very long, I would like to only show the items in the list if the user actually clicks on the dropdownlist to expand it. I found various tutorials on how to use AJAX with cascading dropdownlists but none explaining if it is possible to have just one dropdownlist which gets populated with AJAX when the user expands it. Are there any extenders coming with the AJAX toolkit that I missed? What would be the best way of achieving this?
