View 4 RepliesI have a form where users can store some data for archived documents. All documents are ONLY in PDF format.
There are 2 things I would like to do:
1. there is a "file path" text box on the form. I would like to open a "browse file dialog" box when user clicks the textbox and then the user browses for the file (file is on the users local machine) and selects it. The full file path should be saved to the textbox as string (e.g. "c:archive2010document11122011.pdf"). Also I would like to "limit" the file browser dialog to only show PDF format files...
2. add a code behind command to open the file from the saved path+name (see 1.) in the user's default PDF viewer (Acrobat or Foxit)
I am having trouble connecting to a ms sql database on the server. The hosting company said that the .sql file was imported successfully, but when I try to use the 'login' or 'create account' features im getting an error page saying:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed.
I am sure all the connection info is correct so it is really frustrating trying to work the problem. I have listed the connection string in my web.config file to see if anyone can see anything wrong with it.
It is possible to upload a file to an account using the below code by specify an existing filepath.
What I wonder is how it instead would be possible to just write a string to this file instead. Like I want to open the file and write the string "Hello" to this file, file1.txt.
How can that be achieved. I beleive I would have to open up a stream of some kind but are not exactly sure how to set that up:

View 11 RepliesI have an application I am trying to write that generates a text file conforming to a file specification, and the file could contain thousands of lines. This part is easy. The more challenging part for me is the user interface. It needs to be a web interface with various options to affect what data gets on the file; this part is no problem. The process for generating the file, though, could take a little time depending on the amount of data , and I would think the web page would time out.
What options do I have for the UI? Could I create some sort of service that the page calls and runs in the background? When the process errors or is finished, I'm thinking there could be an email sent out, or even messages displayed on the page.
If I have an upload control that uploads mp3's to a file on my server and stores user specific information of the uploader in my SQL database, is it possible to output the songs in the mp3 folder to an XML query string or xml file through SQL server management studio?

I was going to create a templating system to build the model into an HTML representation using HTML 'fragments' stored in an xml template. But it occurs to me that these it might be better to use asp or asp.net than write my own templating system?
What I am wondering is whether/how it would be possible to use asp (maybe asp.net mvc?) to return an HTML string - I wouldn't be running on a web server, or in response to an HTTP request.

I tried using ITextSharp but with that I am not able to render the images/tables etc of word document into the pdf.
In fact, I DO NOT want to ask a question but to share one solution to this. One cause of this problem is you did not register your sql express on iis.I installed .net 3.5 sp1, then ran aspnet_iis -i, then installed sql express 2005 advanced. Yes, here came the notorious alert. So, I ran aspnet_regiis again and everything is OK.Run aspnet_regiis before you have installed sql express.

The point here is I dont know any of the above. Which one is easy and quick to learn and implement. Are there any other solution to achieve this functionality?

i am trying to generate a pdf file using itextsharp in asp.net c#.
I came across table concept in itextsharp n i am trying to use it ie my application. I am having the following problem while using tables.The pdf cell which contains Name of treasery the word treasery comes on next line. I am setting width for each cell. if i increase the width than also no changes come. The gap which is shown using arrow in below image remain as it is al the time. Why is that gap?How to remove that gap?I want a dotted line as a border to only one cell. how to do that?here is my code
