SQL Server :: Switch Two Field Data?
Dec 16, 2010
I pulled a fast one today. I imported thousands of records and accidentally put the FName in the LName and the LName in the FName. I don't have a clue how to write a SQL or TSQL that will switch them. I do have a parameter for the SQL though. WHERE User - System Import.on ASP.NET because this is my place for help instead of going elsewhere to a more specific type of forum just for SQL. I do only ASP.NET VB/CS development so this is my home to find all my answers. (99% of the time).

I have a SQL Server table with a number of fields that are defined with the "Float" data type. I'm running a simple query to retrieve the data from this table and use it to populate a Data Table in my C#.net application.
I just discovered that the data type of the Data Table fields is Double, not Float as I expected. As such, when I store a value like 0.157 it ends up getting stored like this: 0.15700000524520874
I'm aware that such extra "noise" occurs when such a conversion occurs. My major question has to do with why .Net didn't set the Data Type to Float (ie. Single) when the table was first populated?

I was looking a report on internet that data warehousing is much lucrative and highly paid IT career. I am talking about technologies like abinitio etl datastage teradata. I work in ASP.net and sql server 05. Is it a good thought to move from web programming to data warehousing technologies. Since I would have no experience with data warehousing would I be eligible for a good pay? What technologies other than data warehousing are hot in terms to salary? I know, this may sound immature but I am planning to start my own business in future and would need capital for that.

I create a web.sitemap file, and I set enableLocalization="true" under root node. For every child node, I special a value for resourceKey. Then I create two resource files under App_GlobalResources folder: web.sitemap.resx, web.sitemap.zh-cn.resx. In two resource files, I have filled corresponding value. Then I drag a TreeView and SiteMapDataSource control, then bind it. I try to switch different culture from DropDownlist value to show different treeview. But it always show default culture's data even if I switch to a chinese culture, I don't know why. I switch different culuture in InitializeCulture event.

I read a lot of posts where people want to transform the text to uppercase as the user inputs it. I don't care about that.
My customer wants all text input changed to upper case when it's posted. You know that using DetailsView and Gridview you don't have to write code to handle the Insert & Update for each field. However in order to change the text fields to uppercase prior to the insert/update, I'd have to intercept (oninserting/onupdating) and write code for EACH TEXT FIELD. Is there a more efficient way to do this? Maybe something in CSS or some other method I don't know about?

What function do I use to reduce all entries in a database field to a maximum length. The field is 100 characters wide and I need to chop all existing entries in the field down to 20 characters. I prefer not to redefine the field to 20 wide to lose the data and then redefine back to 100.
UPDATE CmpyInfo
SET ( ShortName to 20 characters max )
WHERE ShortName.Length > 20

The following code successfully displays a record in a FormView and sets the FormView mode to 'Edit' when the user clicks on a LinkButton within a Repeater, however the record is not Updated. If I don't change the .SelectCommand and call .DataBind, I'm able to update the first record that is displayed. Naturally that's a moot point because the idea is to be able to update the record that the user selects in the Repeater.Because of the design of the FormView and Repeater, the record *must* be updated via the FormView. Updating the record via the Repeater is not an option.

Trying to figure out how to handle data returned for a site search from a description field. I don't think I want to display all the text from the description field, but I also don't want to "chop" a word in half. How do I get the first 100 characters, plus a few extra letters if needed to prevent a word from being chopped in half. In some cases, the description field is less than 100 characters, so all the text will be displayed. However, if the description does need to be chopped at 100, I'd like to finish the word and add ... to indicate that there is more text.

I am trying to pass data from client to server using a hidden field. If I use a button, then OnClientClick sets the value, and OnClick does the postback and all is well.
However, I am responding to a Client event, and although this works I get no postback. How do I now force a postback from my client handler?

I have a datatable for which i'm defining a dataadapter. I'm specifying an updatecommand with sqlparameters for the dataadapter I set the updatecommand's parameters using the following overload:
[Code]....
The length 16 is used because this is the length of the field according to sql (the image datafield is a pointer of size 16) I noticed .Net is actually truncating the string because of the length i'm setting. An image of size 3kb will properly upload if we set the length field to be greater than 3kb The question I have is what is the proper value (or strategy) to use in order to set for the length field so that ALL images will properly update to the database, with each using the appropriate size.
I guess i could theoretically set the length to be maxint, but this seems sloppy. Looking at sqlparameter documentation i didnt see an 'unlimited' or 'default' length i could set, which would allow each update statement called to use the appropriate size for the data length for that row.

My filter Expression was working fine with filtering by Control Parameters.When I added the Phone Parameter it went nuts - with the Phone Parameter the GridView just Comes out blank upon loading the page (without it would show Select * from Individuals)Is it because the phone field is populated with numbers? Don't get it.... In the SQL server the 'phone' field is set to 'varchar(30)' and nulls are allowed.here is my code:

I have a DetailsView on the page and I have made one of the fields a TemplateField. In the EditItemTemplate and InsertItemTemplate I have a DropdownList that is databound to a table in my Sql Server database. I wanted to add an initial value to the DropdownList
namely "- select -" .
I set the AppendDataBoundItems property to true and added the initial value as a ListItem.Markup of the DropdownList
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_HP" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_HP" [code]...
This works fine for new input. The problem is however that the database already has records that were entered through a Windows Application and many of these records has a null value in this field and exceptions are thrown when I tried to open these records
and the system tried to set the SelectedValue of the DropdownList.After some more searching I found this help
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366709.aspx
So I changed the ListItem in the DropDownList markup to the following:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_RefHospDV4" runat="server"
AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_RefHosp" [code]...
This now solved the problem of opening a record where the value is null in the database, BUT now the RequiredFieldValidator is not validating anymore to make sure that a databound item is selected for this field and not the initial value "- select -". So basically now it is not checking anymore to see if valid input has been entered for the DropDownList and it accepts "- select -" thus it acts as if the field is not a required field anymore.
In short what is required is that I want to make sure that the user enters a valid selection in the DropDownList, but it must also cater for old records that do not have this field entered yet so that those old records can be opened in the DetailsView .Opening Old records (with null in that field):When these old records are opened in the DetailsView the DropDownlist should show "- select -" when the value in the database is null.
Saving records (old or new records):When saving the record in Insert mode or Update mode the RequiredFieldValidator should show that a valid input is not selected if the DropDownList is still on "- select -".

I have an enum:
public enum Status
{
Incomplete = 1, Complete = 2, Cancelled = 3, Deleted = 4
}
Now on a certain page I wish to list this enum in a checkboxlist. This would be fine except that I want the text of each checkbox to display different text than the enum.
i.e the check boxes should say:"Not Processed" instead of "Incomplete"
"Processed" instead of "Complete"
"Void" instead of "Cancelled"
Is it possible to put this enum in a foreach and then switch on the status and update the text. Like so:var statuses = Enum.GetNames(typeof(Status));
foreach (var status in statuses)))
{
switch (status) [code]....
