SQL Server :: How To Handle Data Returned For A Site Search From A Description Field
Nov 30, 2010
Trying to figure out how to handle data returned for a site search from a description field. I don't think I want to display all the text from the description field, but I also don't want to "chop" a word in half. How do I get the first 100 characters, plus a few extra letters if needed to prevent a word from being chopped in half. In some cases, the description field is less than 100 characters, so all the text will be displayed. However, if the description does need to be chopped at 100, I'd like to finish the word and add ... to indicate that there is more text.
I have a database filled with information about a bunch of different articles. I'm trying to add a search mechanisim to the site where you would type in what you are looking for, and it would search through the articles finding the most appropriate article. In my database I have a bunch of different fields that will help find the best article. For example, for each article, there is a title, description, category, a bunch of tags, Number of page views, number of votes, and the sum of all the vote scores. All this informaiton i believe can be used to gather the most relevent article based on the persons search terms. The problem is I don't know what to do with this information. What I would like to do is have a scoring system where the highest score is the first result and the lowest score is the last result. Where the first result is the most relevent.
So for example: The user types in "Korean War" it looks through all the articles, and gives all the articles with "Korean War" in the title + 1, all the tags with "Korean" or "War" + .1, then adds the number of views/1000, and then adds the average vote/4. (I just made that scoring system up on the spot, I would need to do some testing of course). Then it would sort the articles based upon the score it recieved. Is there anyway to do this with a select statement where I can run all of the calculations and then sort them with an "ORDER BY" command? Or would i have to have the server side code do the calculations store them in an array, and then sort them in the array? Or is there a better way of doing this that I might not know of (which is certainly possible).
I have in my database the News Table which consist of => Id, Title, txt . I need to be able to get a description text from the whole text which exist in txt Field , but without any codes like <...> , just a pure text !! how can I do this?
I implemented PreviousPage to get data from previous page for my search function and display the returned data into a gridview. The gridview's allowpaging is enabled, but every time I go to next page, my previous page data is lost... how can I resolve that?
I am trying to implement search in our various ASP.NET websites that are all located on a particular web server that we control. The server is running IIS7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 32bit. I do NOT want to go third-party by using Google/Bing/etc APIs. I want to have an in-house solution for JUST our website directories (and not worry about searching through other documents elsewhere).
I have looked at Search Server 2010 Express, but that won't work because it is 1) 64bit, and 2) too much overhead for the tiny bit of websites we are wanting to search on. There is a 2008 Express edition that is x86 compatible, but I still think its way too much to install and run for what we are wanting to use it for.
suppose i have few fileds in table and one filed is xml type. how to search this.
the xml which is stored in my xml filed like
<OpenShipments xmlns="x-schema:C:UPSLabelOpenShipments.xdr"> <OpenShipment ShipmentOption="RS" ProcessStatus=""> <ShipTo> [code]... we can query sql server data very easily but i dont know how to query the xml data which stored in xml filed.how to query address field in my xml or how to query Options field, how query CompanyOrName. please help me to construct the sql. guide me in detail with few sample for querying xml datatype.
I have a question involving the ItemDataBound EventI have a linkbutton, btnOverview, that is displayed in a DataList ItemTemplate.I would like to select 1 of 2 imageurls for this button based on the value of haseOverview which is a field returned by the SelectCommend of the sqlDataSourcefor the DataList. I am not sure of how to reference this field.I have highlighted what I think is he relevant code section below.
I need to format this date time into the format Day/Month/Year on the same template field.
I am avoiding doing this under SQL server because that will mean changing my data type in my dataset to string instead of data time which i do not want.
What's the best method to allow a user to search in a specific field for a record(s) containing the keywords they enter into a textbox? I am considering using the streamreader to obatin the values from textbox into an array, so I can build dynamic query using the stringbuilder. Is there a cleaner or more efficient method to approach this common search functionality?
Dim Result As New DataTable DataAdapter.Fill(Result) 'bind data to visible surname/name grid If Result.Rows.Count = 0 Then NoInputBottom.Text = "No Results. Please widen your search criteria and try again" NoInputTop.Text = "No Results. Please widen your search criteria and try again" Else GV.DataSource = Result GV.DataBind() End If
I have also tried moving the check to the gridview like so:
If GV.Columns.Count = 0 Then NoInputBottom.Text = "No Options Selected: Please select your search criteria and try again" NoInputTop.Text = "No Options Selected: Please select your search criteria and try again" End If
When I run the code. the noinput labels do not have value, the null check seems to be failing? how to display a message if the search returned no reults.
this is from the product details page and the description goes in a straight line always - i want to make the description a box and have lenght of 30 characters every line -- i want to modify the description not to be in a straight line
I have a SQL Server table with a number of fields that are defined with the "Float" data type. I'm running a simple query to retrieve the data from this table and use it to populate a Data Table in my C#.net application.
I just discovered that the data type of the Data Table fields is Double, not Float as I expected. As such, when I store a value like 0.157 it ends up getting stored like this: 0.15700000524520874
I'm aware that such extra "noise" occurs when such a conversion occurs. My major question has to do with why .Net didn't set the Data Type to Float (ie. Single) when the table was first populated?
create db driven meta keywords/description. I would store these records in a database, xml format i presume; since it would be per culture. How would i go about doing this?
I have done some refactoring on a asp.net mvc application already deployed to a live web site. Among the refactoring was moving functionality to a new controller, causing some urls to change. Shortly after the various search engine robots start hammering the old urls. What is the right way to handle this in general?
Ignore it? In time the SEs should find out that they get nothing but 400 from the old urls.Block old urls with robots.txt?Continue to catch the old urls, then redirect to new ones? Users navigating the site would never get the redirection as the urls are updated through-out the new version of the site. I see it as garbage code - unless it could be handled by some fancy routing?Other?
I'm used to public facing websites that use ASP.net membership - and when the SESSION vbl's timeout we re-direct to the login page like this
Code:
If Session("Yr") Is Nothing Then Page.Response.Redirect("~Login.aspx?reason=timeout") End If
And on the login page we check for that reason and put up a label on the screen saying that things timed out to protect sensitive data. This works fine. Now I'm doing a web site that's in house - and when the users connect they get a BROWSER POP-UP to login with the DOMAIN UN/PW - and once they get past that my default page redirects them to a home portal page. What do I do when my session vbl's expire now? I can't redirect to a login page - there is not one. How do I cause the re-authentication to happen more naturally?
I have a partial view thats being rendered in my Site.Master file, and it contains a form - im able to submit values and itll throw it to the controller just fine..the problem is when validation fails and i need to go back to the form to display errors
How can i have a form that uses a viewmodel inside Site.Master and still be able to throw it back and post validation errors?
I have created the folowing stored procedure and it is working fine... I have used OVER clause in the query written in the WITH block. Can some body provide description about working of OVER clause and why I need to use it with the ROW_NUMBER() function.
CREATE PROCEDURE SelectOrder @PageIndex INT, @PageSize INT AS BEGIN WITH Order AS ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY OrderId DESC) AS Row, * FROM Orders ) SELECT * FROM Order WHERE Row between (@PageIndex - 1) * @PageSize + 1 and @PageIndex*@PageSize END
I have a simple ASP.NET 4 site. I am using Forms Authentication. I have Session timeout set to 20 minutes. Also when the user authenticates I set the AuthenticationTicket to expire in 20 minutes. So normally everything works fine. If there is more than 20 minutes of inactivity and the user requests a page on the site they are redirected back to the Login page as I would expect.
However, let's say that the user is on a page that contains a form. Then they wait 25 minutes. Then they go to submit the form. Instead of being redirected back to the Login page, the site attempts the postback and I immediately get errors because there is code in the postback that attempts to get information out of Session.
It seems like ASP.NET does not redirect back to Login on postback if the AuthenticationTicket and Session has expired. How can I handle this? I hope I don't have to write special code on each page.
i am having a condition in which i have to pass the query string in the URL, the page which i am calling contains the Site map path control.
But as i pass the query string with the URL, the site map path is not working.
how can i handle query string in site mat path control as i have web.sitemap file containing the nodes
Edited : my url is like http://localhost:1400/RevenueAccounting/Auth/BillingAdministration/RackHireDueDetails.aspx?t=1&LiableRoad=BNSF
having 2 varables in query string, the first variable will remain same always but the value of second variable changes the actual error is, when i am using just the URL
What is the best way to handle following situation? A dropdown(for master table) is optional in a particular form. But, In database table the field is constrained with foreign key. If user don't select from dropdown then It creates problem because of foreign key. One solution is to create default option in master table and use it in case of blank selection. but in dropdown, we need to handle this to show on top. Is it perfect solution?
