SQL Server :: Buy A license For SSMS 2008 / It's For Development Only?
Feb 12, 2011
If I install SSMS 2008 as a client tool (on my workstation at my company) to access to SQL Server 2008 Production, do I need to buy a license for SSMS 2008?I found out that SSMS 2008 is free but not sure if it's for development only.

I'm having difficulties with a clean SQL Server 2008 + SP1 (64 bit) install. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with VS2010. The Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369) is installed via Windows Update. I installed SQL Server Management Studio (64 bit) via the Microsoft website. When I open SSMS and try to login with Windows Authentication to (local)/localhost/[computername] I get the following error:
[Code]....
I don't understand this because I opened the inbound/outbound ports for 1433/1434. As wel as inbound/outbound exceptions for the programs
%ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL10.SQLEXPRESSMSSQLBinnsqlservr.exe
%ProgramFiles% (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90Sharedsqlbrowser.exe
The configuration manager is configured as follows: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369)

It works perfectly the first time I install SSMS 2008 Express and I can access my remote database. But, after I restart my machine and open an instance of SSMS the database node is missing.
Before:
After: [:(]
I tried refreshing the database folder but still nothing. I even uninstall but it's still the same.

I have a test website with VS 2008 that just uses code behind files, such as Foo.aspx.cs. Thus, the web server compiles them on the fly. The problem I'm running into is I can't use any C# 3.0 features. If I do:
[code]....
Then VS will work fine (everything gets highlighted and Intellisensed), but when I run the site it just throws up compiler errors..
Is there a way to fix this, or do you have to compile a DLL to target the 3.0 runtime? If so that's insanely lame.

I had archived all of my files prior to the change. Since I am now having a great deal of trouble working with 2010, I want to revert. My question is: If I restore all of the archived files and start 2008, will I need to make any changes to the registry or to any other files?
The problems that I am having are illusive. Some of the relative paths nolonger work. Some f the projects that had been working for 24 months no longer functions. I am having a great deal of trouble calling my older "[WebMethod]" "ASMX" services and many other issues.

I am developing a single web application that will dynamically change its content depending on which domain name is used to reach the site. Multiple domains will point to the same application. I wish to use the following code (or something close) to detect the domain name and perform the customizations:
[code]....
I would like to test the functionality of the above using the ASP.NET development server. I created mappings in the local HOSTS file to map [URL] to 127.0.0.1, and [URL] to 127.0.0.1. I then browse to the application with the browser using [URL] (etc).
When I try to test this code using the ASP.net development server the [URL] always says localhost. It does NOT capture the host entered in the browser, only localhost.
Is there a way to test the URL detection functionality using the development server?

I am playing around with WebMatrix ans SQL CE 4.0. I wanted to load up a SQL CE V4.0 db from an Access db.
Tried to connect SSMS Exp to SQL 4.0 sdf file (created in WebMatrix starter site template) and was rejected with the following error that SSMS Express is not yet "aware" of SQL CE V4.0):
Cannot connect to C:Users....App_DataStarterSite.sdf.
This is not a valid SQL Server Compact Database file or this file version is not supported by current SQL Server Compact Engine. (SQL Server Compact ADO.NET Data Provider)
[code]...
The sdf file is "a valid SQL Server Compact Database file" - it works fine in WebMatrix.
What do I need to do to make SQL CE 4.0 files kosher for SSMS Express? The error messages suggest that I need to update the SQL Server Compact ADO.NET Data Provider, however I might do that.

I have recently combined my aspnet membership database and main website database into one database file, I'm happy with the schemas, stored procedures etc. (This is a development project not yet a production project.)
My problem is that I can no longer simultaneously connect to the database from Visual Studio if a user is logged in to the website.
EG:
Scenario 1: No user is logged in to the website. I can go to the Data Connection window in VS, choose "Add Connection" and then inspect the contents and schemas of the database. This is fine.
Scenario 2: A user is logged in on the website. I try to connect to the website in VS and get the error:
"Cannot open user default database. Login failed. "
Scenario 3: I am connected to the database in VS and nobody is logged into the website. If someone tries to log into the website they get the following error:
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
So it seems from the above that there can be only one connection to the database at a time? However this was not the case before I combined the membership database with the main website database. I could always make changes as a user logged into the website and at the same time see those changes through the connection in Visual Studio.

Is there any updated version of DPW 1.1 that supports SQL Server 2008?

My customer has a sharepoint 2007 server installation where they show a simple GUI. They want me to develop a webpart for displaying the top 10 most critical service arrends and add this to their "start" sharepoint webpage. The data is available through a stored procedure, and the gui could be as simple as a repeater. BUT, how do I make this as a webpart in sharepoint. This means I want to drag and ppsition it anywhere I want on the sharepoint GUI. I have worked with asp.net for 5 years, but never touched sharepoint.
I did some googling on the topic but what i found was very cumbersome, they said I needed to have sharepoint installed locally. Thats just not possible in the current environment. Surely its not that difficult. Can't I just develop a standard webpart and import it somehow into sharepoint?

I'm getting "Cannot connect to ASP.NET development server" almost every time I stop the ASP.NET server before restarting the project in debug mode. It can take between 15 seconds and 2 minutes to get the error message, and Visual Studio is frozen.
Sometimes I get three in a row, and I have to wait 2 minutes each time, or go into Task Manager and kill to process. Then I have to start Visual Studio 2010 again, which is at least three times slower than Visual Studio 2008 to open.
It's *extremely* annoying. I know I don't have to close the server if the code has changed, but sometimes I simply want to restart my website in debug mode (there is a cache on most web service calls, so this clears the cache). A workaround is to add "foo" code to a class and restart the project.
I'm running Visual Studio 2010 Professional on Windows Server 2008. I'm running the Visual Studio Power Tools too, with the latest update.

I have created my site using ASP.NET Personal Starter Kits 3.5. I use Visual Studio 2008 only . .with its built-in SQL Server (2005 Express) ... my database in App_Data is ASPNETDB.MDF ...
I have created some of my tables also ....in ASPNETDB ..
In my local PC the site was running fine ...
But when I publish my site on production server it doesn't work and shows the following error
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
My hosting provider connection string ..
<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=69.16.253.19;Initial Catalog=usa_data;Persist Security Info=True;User Id=user;Password=pass" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
My hosting provider gave me the connection string to connect to the SQL Server 2005 but it doesn't work...
I don't understand why my site was running fine using the production SQL Server 2005 in my local PC when I include ASPNETDB.MDF file in App_Data in my local pc only ..if I remove file ASPNETDB.MDF from App_Data of my local pc ... the site stops working ...
Can anybody tell em how to fix this ... !! I am very tensed since last 3-4 days

I want to copy a database on a development server to my local server. I am not the server administrator but I have rights to the database. Soon after the wizard Executes the SQL Server Agent Job it fails and the error message says:
The job failed. Check the event log on the destination server for details.
Where do I find this log? Also what could be the problem?

Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

Would something be missing, not working, or confusing if I do this? First, install SQL Server 2008 Standard, and SP1. Then, install Visual Studio 2010 Professional, unchecking SQL Server 2008 Express option. Or would I need to fix any configurations afterwards?

I am planning to start up a small business, where i would like to provide my service as a software developer, web applications, or desktop applications etc.I am not sure what Visual Studio license i need to buy,to allow me to do this legally and how much it would cost.to give you an example -
customers provide me with the requirements- i write the application with my copy of visual studio and sell it to the customer for an agreed price, and he or she uses the application commercially , for exampel if its a website i write it, then he/she can publish it via a webhosting company.but i am not sure what license of VS i need to buy which will allow me to do this legally.

I am wondering the best way to change my connection string based upon which server I am accessing.
Essentially, all of the development is done on our local machines - once we think it is working, we upload it to our development server. In these 2 instances, I want my application to go off of our "dev" connection string for the SQL database in the web.config.
However, once it is published to our production server (for an internal application), I would like the connection string to point to our live db.
I am using the N-Tier model by Imar Spaanjaars - and have it setup like he suggests - In my DAL I have a class called AppConfiguration -
In this class I have a public readonly property ConnectionString() which returns the connection string in the web.config.
This is in an individual class library. What I would like to do is something similar to:
If server is localhost OR devstring return devString else return productionstring
