My computer system froze on me, the mouse froze, cntrl-alt-del, did nothing, so I reset it. Did a disk check, and now everything seems fine except for my master Page html code which I was in the middle of editing when it happened. The VB code-behind file is still ok, the designer file still shows ok with all of the controls in it, but I can't get into desgn or source view. It just opens and gives a whole page of hesixecimal code such as as:
00000030 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00000040 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
It just gives me a whole page full of numbers like this. I haven't backed up for a few weeks and so I hope I can get this back.

I'm new to C# web development. I'm trying to reference a param from Site.Master.cs in Site.Master, so that in Site.Master page, I can do:
<%
if (someParam == true) {
%>
some HTML code
<%
}
%>
The param someParam is the one I want to pass from Site.Master.cs.

Using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I was used to creating a web app anytime and I would get a default page for starters and be happy. But today I find that when I pick either the ASP.NET Web Site or ASP.NET Web Application templates I get site.master and a bunch of site admin files that I don't want. Alternately when I select the empty versions of those templates, I get almost nothing at all. An almost empty web.config page and no Default.aspx page. There is nothing magical about having a default.aspx page in place, but it is an indicator of a change when I can only get a virtually completely empty website or a website with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't want.
Also, for some reason, when I create a new app or website as just noted, in the Solution Explorer I get aspx.designer.cs files showing as well as web.config files for both debug and release. Somehow some settings and templates must have changed, or am I missing something here? How can I get my settings/templates to go back to the way they were?

I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC (1.0). I have a problem to resolve. I have developed a web applicaton (an application of articles like e-commerce) with a head (logo and menu). I have defined the head (logo and menu) in the Master page (site.master). Now, I must display the number of articles in the head in a field (like the number of articles in the virtual basket in the e-commerce). I can read the number of articles in the data base (in the controller), but i can't integrate it in the master page.

I'm used to public facing websites that use ASP.net membership - and when the SESSION vbl's timeout we re-direct to the login page like this
Code:
If Session("Yr") Is Nothing Then
Page.Response.Redirect("~Login.aspx?reason=timeout")
End If
And on the login page we check for that reason and put up a label on the screen saying that things timed out to protect sensitive data. This works fine. Now I'm doing a web site that's in house - and when the users connect they get a BROWSER POP-UP to login with the DOMAIN UN/PW - and once they get past that my default page redirects them to a home portal page. What do I do when my session vbl's expire now? I can't redirect to a login page - there is not one. How do I cause the re-authentication to happen more naturally?

I have a simple ASP.NET 4 site. I am using Forms Authentication. I have Session timeout set to 20 minutes. Also when the user authenticates I set the AuthenticationTicket to expire in 20 minutes. So normally everything works fine. If there is more than 20 minutes of inactivity and the user requests a page on the site they are redirected back to the Login page as I would expect.
However, let's say that the user is on a page that contains a form. Then they wait 25 minutes. Then they go to submit the form. Instead of being redirected back to the Login page, the site attempts the postback and I immediately get errors because there is code in the postback that attempts to get information out of Session.
It seems like ASP.NET does not redirect back to Login on postback if the AuthenticationTicket and Session has expired. How can I handle this? I hope I don't have to write special code on each page.
ADDED: web.config code
<location path="ForgotLogin.aspx">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="*" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Login.aspx"></forms>
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>

i am having a condition in which i have to pass the query string in the URL, the page which i am calling contains the Site map path control.
But as i pass the query string with the URL, the site map path is not working.
how can i handle query string in site mat path control as i have web.sitemap file containing the nodes
Edited : my url is like http://localhost:1400/RevenueAccounting/Auth/BillingAdministration/RackHireDueDetails.aspx?t=1&LiableRoad=BNSF
having 2 varables in query string, the first variable will remain same always but the value of second variable changes the actual error is, when i am using just the URL
http://localhost:1400/RevenueAccounting/Auth/BillingAdministration/RackHireDueDetails.aspx?t=1
in web.sitemap then the site map is not showing on page, and the value of second variable changes so how could i use site map path for this condition

I have a site with a few pages, and I decided to have my navigation button (to go from page to page) on my site.master page so every page looks the same. Two questions:
1. is that the correct thing to do? seems to work fine, I'm just not sure if it is proper or not.
2. with the navigation/buttons being on the site.master. How can I pass an "id" from one page to another.
Example:
<asp:Button ID="Button5" runat="server" CssClass="style2" ForeColor="#000084"
PostBackUrl="~/Inbounds.aspx" Text="Inbounds" />
I want the postbackurl to be "~/Inbounds.aspx?id=" a value from a textbox on the page you are leaving. More or less to pass a company name or ID number from page to page, so the queries know who the "owner" is?

I have a simple SiteMapPath in my master page like below.
<asp:SiteMapPath ID="SiteMapPath1" runat="server" SkinID="SiteMap" Visible="true" /><br />
Also I use Web.sitemap and include all static sitemap pages. In my Web.config, I have this:
<siteMap enabled="true"/>
Currently, many pages uses this static site map for many projects and I'm not supposed to update the master page, but I need to have dynamic site map so that I can add query strings for each navigating pages.

Trying to figure out how to handle data returned for a site search from a description field. I don't think I want to display all the text from the description field, but I also don't want to "chop" a word in half. How do I get the first 100 characters, plus a few extra letters if needed to prevent a word from being chopped in half. In some cases, the description field is less than 100 characters, so all the text will be displayed. However, if the description does need to be chopped at 100, I'd like to finish the word and add ... to indicate that there is more text.

I have an interesting issue I have racked my brain trying to find a solution to.
I have a site with a single master page. Part of that master page is a text field and button. They are not part of a content placeholder, they are simply part of the master page, itself, and are intended to allow people to search the site from any page on the site.
So, all search requests are routed to a search.aspx page, regardless. I am doing this by setting the PostBackUrl attribute of the button control to "search.aspx".
This all works great, except when I try to use this search capability from the search.aspx page, itself. I figure this is because I am using the Page.PreviousPage object and since a postback from the search.aspx page, itself will result in the Page.PreviousPage being Nothing, it is not performing the proper action.

I have my main web site pages in the Root folder. I have several other pages in a subfolder below the Root folder. When I launch a web page that is in the sub folder it does not correctly render the page. For example it loses the gif image that needs to be on every page. Is there something I need to add to the pages in the sub folder or do I need to set the path differently to the master page? Currently it looks like this;
[Code]....
This works for the web pages in the Root folder.

I want to ask can I use the master page to make a full border to the site for example: [URL] and then put the content inside that, or I just only can use master pages to do headers and footers?

I have a site with about 4 pages or so. I was asked to implement a very simple security (check if user in database, if not kick out) using active directory and validating against a table of users. I was simply thinking of createing a master page and making all pages inherit that master page. I would then authenticate the users from the master page.

<link href="../../Content/Site.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
The above code shows an external css inclusion tag declared in Site.Master template.
My question: why did the Asp.net MVC team choose that way rather than using "~/Content/Site.css" ?

I have a web app that contains 1 master page and a bunch of content pages. One of the content pages is "SysLogin.aspx", which is called from a menu option from the Master Page. When the page is called, the user logs in. However, there is a "Login" button. In the code behind of the Login_Click() event, the the user successfully logs in, they are supposed to be redirected to a "Default.aspx" page and the Main Menu is enabled. Problem is, the app hangs on the redirect statement and it goes to the Catch portion of the Try Catch construct. For some reason, when I examine the exception, it only says "Unable to evaluate expression". Below is my code. My question, other than what I've stated is...should your application be controlled using code in the Master Page or in child pages. My code from the "SysLogin.aspx" is below. It hangs on the highlighted line of code.
Private Sub btnLogin_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLogin.Click
Try
If txtLoginID.Text.Length > 0 Then
If txtPassword.Text.Length > 0 Then
If dbIO.ValidateUser(txtLoginID.Text, txtPassword.Text) Then
Session("LoggedIn") = txtLoginID.Text
Session("loggedInOk") = "Y"
Response.Redirect("~/Admin/Default.aspx")
End If
End If
End If
Catch ex As Exception
Master.errMsg = dbIO.DisplayError("btnLogin_Click()", "SysLogin", ex.Message)
End Try
End Sub

Apologies for the terribly newb question. We're currently implementing Google Web Optimizer in our ASP.NET Web Application and some of the code is supposed to go in very specific places on certain pages. For example, for the "Control Page" Google has some Javascript that sits outside of the <html> tags.
I know I probably don't need to place the code exactly where Google recommends, but we've been getting some goofy results lately, and I really wanted to make it as watertight as possible to ensure it's not just bad implementation. We have a lot of files in our project that reference the site.master, but only one needs to have some Javascript placed outside the <html> tag. This, in theory, seems simple enough, my question is this: Do I need to put a ContentPlaceHolder in every file that references the site.master? (Even the tens that aren't passing any code to the site.master?) That's not something I feel like doing for many different reasons (altering tens of files). If that's the case, and I do need to add empty ContectPlaceHolders to every page, is there some other way around things without having to piece together a unique file just to put some Javascript outside of the <html> tag?

I have web applications which were developed before I installed during mid week last week the SP1 from Web Platform Installer and MVC3. My applications currently still use MVC2. When I open Site.Master, the VS2010 would crash every time and tries to restart. The problem doesn't apply to .aspx, ascx, or other extension. Does anyone have the same problem? Here is what I have done to my computer:
1. Installed MVC3
2. Installed VS2010 SP1 and associated components using Web Platform Installer (install failed several time, but succeed this morning)
3. Modified myProject.csproj file using NotePad to change <mvcBuildViews> from false to true
