VS 2008 How To Handle Site Timeout

Dec 1, 2010

I'm used to public facing websites that use ASP.net membership - and when the SESSION vbl's timeout we re-direct to the login page like this

Code:

If Session("Yr") Is Nothing Then
Page.Response.Redirect("~Login.aspx?reason=timeout")
End If

And on the login page we check for that reason and put up a label on the screen saying that things timed out to protect sensitive data. This works fine. Now I'm doing a web site that's in house - and when the users connect they get a BROWSER POP-UP to login with the DOMAIN UN/PW - and once they get past that my default page redirects them to a home portal page. What do I do when my session vbl's expire now? I can't redirect to a login page - there is not one. How do I cause the re-authentication to happen more naturally?

How To Handle Session Timeout In Ajax Calls

Mar 8, 2011

I'm making an ajax call using jquery to an asp.net mvc controller action:

[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)]
public ActionResult GetWeek(string startDay) {
var daysOfWeek = CompanyUtility.GetWeek(User.Company.Id, startDay);
return Json(daysOfWeek);
}

When session times out, this call will fail, as the User object is stored in session. I created a custom authorize attribute in order to check if session was lost and redirect to the login page.

Looking For Good Method To Handle Data Invalidation Or Timeout?

May 10, 2010

I understand the need for a function like DB_Get_Cached("sql string") that hashes the SQL in order to perform a lookup in memcached for the existence of the data.

function DB_Get_Cached(string SQL)
data = memcache_get_data(md5(SQL))
if (!data)
return DB_Get(SQL)
end if
end function

What is a good method to expand this to handle data invalidation or timeout?

I'm thinking in terms of product pages in an e-commerce site, or user details in their profile.

State Management :: Form Timeout Vs. Session Timeout Vs. Connectionstrings Timeout?

Jan 27, 2011

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.

We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):

1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout

2. how do I set session timeout

Configuration :: Connecting To DB In Hosting Site - Visual Studio 2008 C# And SQL Server 2008?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm creating a website and I'm testing resgistering and Log-in.

I followed a simple tutorial to create a Log-in in Visual Studio C# template which generated a SQL Server database.Locally the Log-in and registration page works perfectly. The problem is that when I upload my site to the hosting site the navigation works but the Log-in and Registration forms send an error when clicked "Register" or "Log-in". I contacted the site and they upload my database the way it should be because I was doing it wrong. I can see all my files including the data base.

They commented me that I had to do a connection string to the data base so the login and registration forms can work. I don't understand how to do that, I know the connection string has to be declared in the Web Config File, the thing is that I don't know how to write that code and link it to my data base in the hosting site, in fact I have sample code but I don't know just what do I need to put in it.

Webforms Site Using HTTPCookie With 100 Year Timeout Times Out After 20 Minutes

Jun 11, 2010

I have a site that is using Forms Auth. The client does not want the site session to expire at all for users. In the login page codebehind, the following code is used:

// user passed validation
FormsAuthentication.Initialize();
// grab the user's roles out of the database
String strRole = AssignRoles(UserName.Text);
// creates forms auth ticket with expiration date of 100 years from now and make it persistent
FormsAuthenticationTicket fat = new FormsAuthenticationTicket(1,
UserName.Text, DateTime.Now,
DateTime.Now.AddYears(100), true, strRole,
FormsAuthentication.FormsCookiePath);
// create a cookie and throw the ticket in there, set expiration date to 100 years from now
HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie(FormsAuthentication.FormsCookieName,
FormsAuthentication.Encrypt(fat)) { Expires = DateTime.Now.AddYears(100) };
// add the cookie to the response queue
Response.Cookies.Add(cookie);
Response.Redirect(FormsAuthentication.GetRedirectUrl(UserName.Text, false));

The web.config file auth section looks like this:

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name="APLOnlineCompliance" loginUrl="~/Login.aspx" defaultUrl="~/Course/CourseViewer.aspx" />
</authentication>

When I log into the site I do see the cookie correctly being sent to the browser and passed back up: However, when I walk away for 20 minutes or so, come back and try to do anything on the site, the login window reappears. This solution was working for a while on our servers - now it's back. The problem doesn't occur on my local dev box running Cassini in VS2008.

How To Handle A Postback After Session Expires On Site

Mar 18, 2011

I have a simple ASP.NET 4 site. I am using Forms Authentication. I have Session timeout set to 20 minutes. Also when the user authenticates I set the AuthenticationTicket to expire in 20 minutes. So normally everything works fine. If there is more than 20 minutes of inactivity and the user requests a page on the site they are redirected back to the Login page as I would expect.

However, let's say that the user is on a page that contains a form. Then they wait 25 minutes. Then they go to submit the form. Instead of being redirected back to the Login page, the site attempts the postback and I immediately get errors because there is code in the postback that attempts to get information out of Session.

It seems like ASP.NET does not redirect back to Login on postback if the AuthenticationTicket and Session has expired. How can I handle this? I hope I don't have to write special code on each page.

ADDED: web.config code

<location path="ForgotLogin.aspx">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow users="*" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Login.aspx"></forms>
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>

SQL Server :: How To Handle Data Returned For A Site Search From A Description Field

Nov 30, 2010

Trying to figure out how to handle data returned for a site search from a description field. I don't think I want to display all the text from the description field, but I also don't want to "chop" a word in half. How do I get the first 100 characters, plus a few extra letters if needed to prevent a word from being chopped in half. In some cases, the description field is less than 100 characters, so all the text will be displayed. However, if the description does need to be chopped at 100, I'd like to finish the word and add ... to indicate that there is more text.

SQL Server :: ISP Updated To SQL Version That VS 2008 Can't Handle ?

Dec 4, 2010

I have unexpectedly found that I cannot access my data tables from VS 2008. A window comes up saying "The server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL server 2005 are supported". Also, as a consequence I imagine, two web sites which refer to datatable have stopped working.

Has my ISP updated to an SQL version that VS 2008 can't handle ?

DataSource Controls :: SQL Statement Timeout / System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout Expired?

Jan 20, 2010

Hopefully I am posting this in the correct forum.

I am having a problem with my ASP.Net Web application. The application is developed using vb.net and is linked to a SQL Server database. Let me explain how the application works and the problem I am experiencing. The system is an online web app which allows registered users to create a CV online. One of the pages within the app gives users the chance to add a cover note to their CV. The page that allows them to do this consists of only a textarea control and a button control. The textarea allows users to input up to 4,000 characters.

Once the user clicks the 'Save' button to save their cover note info, the following code then executes.This code checks to see if the CV already has cover note info, if it does, then the application runs an update statement, otherwise, it runs an insert statement.The table within the database which records the cover note information is called tbl_covernote and has three columns, covernote_id (int and autoincrement), cv_id(int), covernote_text (nvarchar(max)).

The error which occurs sometimes is as follows:

Dim dr As SqlDataReader
Dim param(0) As SqlParameter

AJAX Timeout Although Request Is Completing Long Before Timeout Duration

Feb 15, 2010

I have an ASP.Net application that makes an AJAX request to retrieve at report. The report can run for a long time so I set the asyncpostbacktimeout in <asp:ScriptManager /> to 600. However, when I try to run the report, if it runs for longer than 90 seconds it fails to come back. I can see in the IIS logs that the POST request succeeded with a 200 status and I can see the time taken is much less than 600.

The web page dutifully waits for the entire 600 seconds before returning with a timeout error:

Error:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerTimeoutException:

The server request timed out.

Is there any setting I should be checking in IIS? Connection timeout is 900 seconds.

VS 2008 - How To Publish A Site

Feb 7, 2010

Believe it or not, but I did not had to worry about the hosting of a asp.net site for years.

Figured I'll get some hosting for fiddling with things (for instance, mvc now).

However I found this "Publish" function in VS (vs '08 team ed) a pain. Publish to an FTP site seems to take ages. So I just publish to a local folder and FTP that up (filezilla). But d@mn.....the dll's used, javascript files (included by default in an asp.net mvc project), etc keep failing...driving me bonkers.

How you guys "Publish"? I got a fairly good host now (thanks M) so the problem should be on my side. Internet connection speed is not too bad here.
