Security :: IIS Creating A New Database In AppData Directory?
Apr 21, 2010
I've created a web application that's using Windows Authentication using roles authorization.
In VS2008 everything's runs fine by running the app or browsing using the VS web server.
I create a new virtual App in IIS6 and then try to browse the page. The app hangs, and has a very mysterious habit of creating a new SQL Server Express database in our appdata directory called TimeTracker.MDF.
So I was thinking somewhere along the line we installed a TimeTracker Starter Kit and it updated a configuration file somewhere.
My initial reaction was to search all of the config files under the framework directories. So i did that using Windows GREP, only to find one entry here:
C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files

I have a ASP.Net program written in C# that uses a database stored in the AppData directory, the program works perfectly on my development (Win7SQL 2008R2) when I deploy to a Win2008R2SQl 2008 R2 server the program is unable to connect to the database. I'm using the connection string below. Several sites suggest I set the Application Pool to use 'Network Service' as this has Modify permission to the AppData directory, I have done this but it still won't work, another site suggested I Application Pool to "Load User Profile = True" but still no joy.
[code].....
I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." in my app and "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:inetpubwwwrootADPhonebookApp_DataDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." in the Application Event Log

In my website project, i have not used any controls like login, createuser, forget pass etc. However, i can login, create user, recover password, change security question etc, using only code-behind programming. mean without using any inbuilt security controls as discussed above, i am fully secured but on some points i need little help.I have stored all users credentials in columns named username, password, securityques, security ans, libraryadmin (this is checkbox field), contentadmin (this is checkbox field) etc.I am wishing, when I check in database in fields libraryadmin or contentadmin for any user, he can access to that zone too. Still I am using this feature as given below:
****************************************************
[Code]....
****************************************************************
Look at the codes above, in "libraryadmin" directory/zone only username "abhimanyu" is authorized and the same in "contentadmin" directory/zone only "abhimanyu" is authorized.But I am wishing to control such authorization from database where I have stored the credentials. I mean by checking in checkbox field named libraryadmin (this is boolean field) in database that user automatically be authorized, no need to type always in configuration file. you have any idea about, or tell me some articles on it. I know how to manage it from asp.net default authorization and authentication. I just need it manually as I have considered above

I am working on an Ecommerce website. I have created a database using Server Explorer named 'MyTestStore' and created Tables and Stored procedures inside it.
Than I used the program called aspnet_regsql.exe (which is in:
C:windowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727) to create the membership and roles tables. And this tool created all the membership tables in the MyTestStore database. All is fine till this point.
Enabling Roles:
Now I need to enable roles, insert admin and users into this membership tables in my database. so I opened up ASP.Net Configuration Tool but when I enable and create roles it automatically creates a database called ASPNETDB under App_Data folder whereas, I want to have the roles enabled in the database MyTestStore. But it keeps creating the database ASPNETDB. How do Imap the ASP.Net configuration Tool to create and add users into my database called MyTestStore instead of that default ASPNETDB.

I'm developing two applications. One is server application and one more is client application and i'm implementing Localization in both the applications. I have used 7 language resource files in both the application. I need to add the reference of server application in my client application to access some global methods and all. After i'm adding the resource file in the application if i build the application it creates folder for each resource file with language culture code (Spanish -> es-ES, French -> fr-FR) under Bin directory.
Similarly if i add the reference of server application into client application then the resource file dll of server application will be added under corresponding langauge culture folder(es-ES,fr-FR) in the Bin directory. But i don't want to create any resource file dll for the application under Bin directory and aslo i need to put all the resource files inside the application only.

I have a shared folder with directories on a remote server that I am trying to access with the method System.IO.Directory.GetDirectories(). This folder is based off of the credentials gotten from windows authentication. My problem is that everything works fun when I debug the Web Application in the built in IIS in VS, but when I set it up in IIS V5.1, it tells me that I have an invalid username and password. I am using Visual Studio 2005 on a Microsoft XP SP2 machine.

how I can prevent someone from viewing directory list (files) from url?
For example: [URL]... I don't want anyone to see directory list of files under the folder directory by just entering above. I have several project folders for my web app and in each folder, I have a web.config file <authorization><deny users="?" /></authorization> as well as <location> tags. They are working fine from preventing unauthorize access to the .aspx pages and redirecting to login page. But still want to prevent viewing the directory folder.

I have requested my web host provider to apply a SSL over the entire domain, as this is the only option available. The trouble is, I am not sure when the SSL is applied over the domain, how do I force certain web pages, the login page to SSL or even pages sitting in a directory. My web host service had mentioned when the SSL is applied over the domain, unless applying code the pages remain as http.
I am new to SSL and asp. I am using VB in my contract. Very confused. I have searched google and posts but have not found a simple clear access?

My client has s website hosted under IIS 6. This website has a subsite as a virtual directory that we need to ensure is only accessed via HTTPS.
We have enabled HTTPS access to the sub-site, but because the root site is configured to use HTTP, this is being inherited by the sub-site and you can access it unsecured. How can we prevent this?
The only potential option I've found so far is this implementation of IHttpModule. Is there nothing in the web.config I can set, as you can the security on a WCF binding?

I'm using IIS7.5 and Windows Authentication through an ISA server. I'm trying to migrate a classic ASP application to ASP.net.
We have an internal file server with our department folders on and I'm trying to provide web based access to these. Previously I created a UNC virtual directory to the \serverdepartments share, and because ASP classic ran in the context of the authenticated user they could only browse folders they had permission to.
What security settings should I now be using for the Application Pool and what settings should I use on the Virtual Directory credentials to ensure security? I'd like the ASP.net page to run in the context of the logged in user, and when the code tries to display a sub-folder they don't have access to it should 'bomb out' as before.

I use some code to check if people are in a group in Active Directory. If the group has an '&' in it then I run into problems.
DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://adserver/CN=" + theGroup + ",OU=Distribution Groups,OU=Accounts,DC=ourdomain,DC=net");
I tried to do
theGroup = theGroup.Replace("&",
"\&");
but it's the same problem.
