Security :: Enabling/Creating Roles In Database Using Configuration Tool?
Jan 6, 2011
I am working on an Ecommerce website. I have created a database using Server Explorer named 'MyTestStore' and created Tables and Stored procedures inside it.
Than I used the program called aspnet_regsql.exe (which is in:
C:windowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727) to create the membership and roles tables. And this tool created all the membership tables in the MyTestStore database. All is fine till this point.
Enabling Roles:
Now I need to enable roles, insert admin and users into this membership tables in my database. so I opened up ASP.Net Configuration Tool but when I enable and create roles it automatically creates a database called ASPNETDB under App_Data folder whereas, I want to have the roles enabled in the database MyTestStore. But it keeps creating the database ASPNETDB. How do Imap the ASP.Net configuration Tool to create and add users into my database called MyTestStore instead of that default ASPNETDB.
I'm dealing with a scenario where a legitimate user doesn't have a clue about his password, secret question or the answer. So, I was trying to create an admin tool that would help me in situations like these where the admin should be able to type in username and reset the password without having to know/enter answer to secret question. I understand that I need to make some changes to the web.config for this to work. I thought I made all the changes but my ResetPassword() requests are still not working.
I quickly setup Roles to get my site up, but now I am going back and tightening them up. I have a custom SQL Server database Provider to hold users.I want 3 Roles, Admins, Progress and then a standard User.I have all the files only Admins to use are in a folder SecureAdminI have all the files only Progress to use are in a folder SecureProgress And all the files that everybody has access to are in the Secure Folder. As soon as I added the Custom XML Site provider, my Tree View disppeared. I would assume it's because my roles are not configured correct. I can use the ASP.NET configuration tool to see my roles and users, but any combination I try in there doesn't seemto do anything. I see most examples have some code like below.
[code]...
But even when I set up some roles in the ASP.Net configuration, I never see anything like that added to my web.config? Is this because it is stored in the database? If not, what what I add to my web.config to make this work?
I would like to use the Role Membership and User Security database as my application database too. That is, just add the tables and relationships required by my application's data access layer to the Membership and Roles Database to save on hosting fees, (I have to pay extra for having two databases instead of one). Of course, the connection string would have to be adjusted, but I don't see a downside considering the application's database is actually an Access database. What can I say, it was a requirement at the time.
Basically, I would like to do the opposite of this: http://forums.asp.net/p/1162485/1925262.aspx#1925262
As mentioned in subject line I'm not able to configure role based website in IIS7. Please find details below.
Environment Details:-
.Net Framework: 3.5
Server: Windows 2008
Webserver: IIS7
Database: SQL Server 2008
Authentication Type: Form Based
Roles/Membership Provider: User defnied.
Problem:-
After setuped my website in iis7 while trying to Login in web page even I entered correct password it says Incorrect password in Login control. After long googling I suspecty that we need to add "Provider to trusted provider" to Authorized provider. I have gone http://www.iis.net/ConfigReference/system.webServer/management/trustedProviders/add but didn't works for me. Can you anyone please help me in this.
I am newbie to asp.net.I want to create roles for the existing users in my database. I dont want to use the membership provider database n roles provided with it.(i don't want to use aspnet.mdf at all)
I am create roles for my existing users n assign i wanted to assign the particular roles to a particular assign.
i want to implement role_based autherization in an application, the only way i know to do it is to use roles framework, but i don't want to add any extra tables to my database, my database already have a users table with a column that specifies a role for each user
how can i use this framework without adding the tables it requires to my database?
We have a web application using VS 2008, c#. We try to filter siteMap nodes based on security roles. We have our customized the mether GetRolesForUser() in RoleProvider class to determine a user's role. In this method, roles will be returned by querying an SQL Server database. However, we found that each time a page was loaded/refershed, this GetRolesForUser() was called, and the database would be queried. This is too MUCH and expensive. We thought the roles should be queried only once when a user logs in. After that, role info should be stored somewhere for this user, rather than query DB all the time.
I am creating a Web Application in asp.net 2.0 and sql server 2005.I want to use an existing database.
I have created a login and a signup page. Then i replace the new SQL database (the one that is created automaticly by the visual studio) with the exiting database I have.If I create a new user, the new user goes to the database and I can login with the new user. I cannot login with the existing users. If I go to the asp.net configuration, I only can see the new users I have created, I cannot see the users that were in the database already and I can't see the roles also.
I can I make the new application to recognize the users and roles of the existing database?
I am building a web site and am trying to run the web site administration tool.
I have reinstalled SQL Server 2008 express and have run the command line administration utilites. When I try to run the administration tool, get the following error when I click on the security tab is
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
I have ensured that I have user instances are enabled
When I click on Choose Data Store I get the following error
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.
I am have problem getting the security selection to view properly. Instead of getting roles and so on I get this following error message:There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem:Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
I used the wizard and went through the steps to set it up and clicked DONE and closed the ASP.NET configuration window/wizard and the database was not created. What might be wrong here?
I have a multi level application that I am developing and need to block multiple rows from being joined. I know how to hide one role but I cannot figure out how to hide multiple.
I've created a web application that's using Windows Authentication using roles authorization.
In VS2008 everything's runs fine by running the app or browsing using the VS web server.
I create a new virtual App in IIS6 and then try to browse the page. The app hangs, and has a very mysterious habit of creating a new SQL Server Express database in our appdata directory called TimeTracker.MDF.
So I was thinking somewhere along the line we installed a TimeTracker Starter Kit and it updated a configuration file somewhere.
My initial reaction was to search all of the config files under the framework directories. So i did that using Windows GREP, only to find one entry here:
C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files oot26676eb792c7e946App_Code.hcjj1nuh.dll
Newb question: what is the standard practice for assigning roles to newly signed-on members. Is it usually manual or is there a way of automatically assigning roles. Being completely new to this, I am confronted by the issue of my site having three different roles that new members could fall into, but am unsure about how to assign each a role. I can't imagine having to go through the process manually if I have thousands of members.
I'm looking forward to enable my ASP.NET web application to utilize the Multi core processor. In Other words, I'm trying to have Multi-core functionality in my ASP.NET application.
I was wondering if any of you had the steps that would enable DoD CAC authentication in IIS 5.1 (XP Pro). I have never done this and am looking to set up a dev environment on my laptop for a CAC enabled website. What is the mechanism that would actually prompt me for a cert if I accessed a website on my laptop? I have read that selecting accept or require client certificates should do this but it doesn't. I just get a 403.7 error saying client certificate required.
I am trying to get the .NET Framework Configuration Tool installed on my server. I am running windows server 2008 with .NET 3.5 SP1 and Visual Studio 2008.
I have dowloaded and installed the lastest version of the Windows SDK but the .NET Framework Configuration Tool is still not installed.
I searched the drive on the server for the mscorcfg.msc file and it is not there but the mscorcfg.dll is there.
After the installation of Windows SDK the program manager now shows the Windows SDK v7.1 option with a group of programs under it, but none are the .NET Framework Configuration tool.
Does anyone know how I can get the .NET Framework Configuration tool installed?
I saw some example in google..and all of them with jquery...is there any way of creating tabs like ajax control tool kit in webforms without using Jquery...its not a requirement..i want to know the best way of doing it..I am very new to MVC and I know its not posibble to use Ajax control tool kit in mvc...I just noticed in this asp.net site My Profile page got some cool tabs..can anyone know how to do something like
Just to describe the scenario. I have a website. This lives on a webserver. On that webserver is an SQL server. The website connects to this database using windows authentication. I have written a windows form application that connects to the SQL Server on the webserver. This application is being run from a location on out intranet. The Winform application use SQL authentication to connect to the database. The SQL Server didn't have mix mode authentication enabled. So I enabled it. The winform application could now connect to the SQL Server.
This is where it starts getting a little strange.
The Website that was already connecting find using integrated authentication starts failing with:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'
When you are enabling mixed mode authentication, you are adding another authentication method, why would the original Windows authentication fail?
