Security :: Extend Default Profile Fields Into Second Custom Table

Apr 23, 2010

I am trying to use a second (custom) table to extend my users profile info. This table is in the same database as the 'aspnet_Users' table but has a different name. I create a FK relationship between the 'aspnet_Users' table and my custom table. Here is my web.config code:

<profile defaultProvider="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider">
<providers>
<clear />
<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider"
type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider"
connectionStringName="ConString_SQLConnectionString"
applicationName="/" />
<add name="MyCustomProfile"
type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider"
connectionStringName="ConString_SQLConnectionString"
applicationName="/"
table="MyProfileTable_Employees" />
</providers>
<properties>
<group name ="MyProfileInfo">
<add name="FirstName" type="string" defaultValue="[null]" customProviderData="FirstName;nvarchar" provider="MyCustomProfile" />
<add name="LastName" type="string" defaultValue="[null]" customProviderData="LastName;nvarchar" provider="MyCustomProfile" />
<add name="EmployeeNumber" type="int" defaultValue="[null]" customProviderData="EmployeeNumber;int" provider="MyCustomProfile" />
</group>
</properties>
</profile>

I have the table "MyProfileTable_Employees" poplulated with data the 'userid' matches to the aspnet_Users table. In my web application (vb), when I type in Profile.MyProfileInfo, there are no custom fields. Actually, when I type profile., there are no profile related entries. What am I missing here? Am I miss-interpting what a custom profile provider is?

Security :: CreateUserWizard With Extra Profile Info?

Sep 23, 2010

I'm using the CreateUserWizard and it's working great. I do have a "step2" that asks the newly created user their first name and last name. Seems simple enough, but I'm getting an error on the Profile.Save(): "This property cannot be set for anonymous users". I'm assuming this is due to the fact that I have DisableCreatedUser="true" for the CreateUserWizard, which is what I NEED to do. Does this mean that until we enable this user, they can't add these few columns? Since the site I am updating requires matching a newly registered user to an already existing "Artist" table, it's important that the administrators are given the first and last name of the user. The aspnet_User table doesn't have that, so I thought I'd give the profile a try.

Security :: Remove Fields From The C# Profile Provider And Database?

Mar 25, 2010

I have an issue where I am running out of database space on my hosting provider. As it turns out, the aspnetdb database is more than 6x our application database. We are using anonymous profiles and there are 21 fields stored in each user profile.

Upon analysis, most of this data is not required to be stored - it is simply wasting space. The part that is wasting the most space (5 binary objects) are not even used by any of the public users. I would like to remove these binary objects from all of the user's profiles without deleting the profiles, but I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this.

I can remove the fields, which will take care of users going forward, but I need to retroactively delete these fields from the aspnetdb database to free up space. Since each user manages their own profiles, I am unsure how to create an automated procedure to delete these fields out each anonymous user's profile.

Security :: Reading Custom Profile Fields From DropDownLists Failing?

May 8, 2010

So I'm using the CreateUserWizard tool, which is working great, and have added a few custom fields to the user's Profile, which is also working great... with one exception. The fields that I'm capturing from TextBoxes are being saved to the database perfectly. But those I'm trying to capture from DropDownLists aren't being saved. No error is taking place, either in my code or at runtime, but no data is being written to the table from these particular fields.

I thought I knew how to capture data from a DropDownList in ASP.NET (I'm a newbie, but not ridiculously so), but I've tried a bunch of stuff here and nothing seems to be working. I'm posting an abbreviated version of my CreateUserWizard1_CreatedUser function below, with comments...

protected void CreateUserWizard1_CreatedUser(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//Get the profile of the user by finding the profile by name
TextBox oUserName = (TextBox)CreateUserWizard1.CreateUserStep.ContentTemplateContainer.FindControl("UserName");

Security :: Changing Aspnetdb To Store User Profile Information?

I need to know how to change aspnetdb to store profile information unique to each user so that I can restrict records in an sql table to only show that user's records.

So if I make a "companyID" int, identity column where would I put it?

Also, when I write the where clause to companyID = profile (companyID) would that work?

Security :: Creating New Profile Table And Getting Information

Feb 25, 2010

In my application I am using the aspnetdb membership for authorizing users. I created a new table UserProfiles that will hold their profile information. The UserID is linked to aspnet_users UserID with a foreign key. One of the columns in the table represent CompanyID (int). I want to be able to restrict logged in users to only see records from their company based on the CompanyID. There can be more than one user with the same CompanyID to the UserID would not work. I can restrict their access by UsedID to only see records they created by using code behind:

and my select statement is:

How would be the best way to restrict the selected data to UserProfiles.CompanyID?

Security :: Table Profile Provider Samples Created By Hao Kung?

Jul 1, 2010

I created a table named Thread to store logged-on users' comments. It has CommentId, Topic, Comment, CreatedTime and UserId columns. I made CommentId as the primary key and UserId as the foreign key to the UnserId in the Membership table aspnet_Users.But when I insert those data into table Thread, I get an error "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'UserId', table 'ASPNETDB.dbo.Thread'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.The statement has been terminated." I have tried different ways to resolve this, but could not make the UserId in the table Thread match the UserId in table aspnet_Users. Yesterday, I found the Table Profile Provider Samples created by Hao Kung at http://www.asp.net/downloads/sandbox/table-profile-provider-samples. It should be be able to solve my problem. But the code was written in C#. Is there anybody who knows a VB version of this code, or a better way to solve my problem?

Preventing Extra Fields From Being Added To A Form

Mar 10, 2011

I realize what I am trying to do is a little unconventional; but I want to make my search SEO. Basically I want the query string resulting from my search to be human readable; if I was doing straight html this would be cake:

<form method="GET"><input type="text" name="Zip" /></form>

I realize that I can change the form method in asp.net, however, all the asp.net state holders show up in the query string. I even tried disabling viewstate and removing all javascript submitting controls (to get rid of __EVENTTARGET) to no avail.

The thing is, I really want to keep using the same master page as I do in the rest of the site; does any one know of anything I can do short of building the page from scratch?

Trying To Implement Custom Profile Fields In Visual Studio 2008 Web Application Project?

Mar 18, 2010

I've been working on this for a while now and nothing has been a bigger pain in asp.net. I'm trying to implement custom profile fields in my visual studio 2008 web application project. I've read a lot of tutorials but they all seem to be either out dated or don't apply to web application projects. Last night I got a little closer to solving the problem when I found the "Web Profile Builder" for web applications. I've successfully set this up and can handle static profile data.I've got my web.config file setup and I can access my custom profile fields by Profile.CustomField. Now I want to figure out how I integrate this with the database and data connection. I know there are two standard ways to handle this, I would like to create new columns in the aspnet_Profile database (rather than the delimited key/value option).I'm pretty new to asp.net and this is my first project with c#, .net, and asp.

DataSource Controls :: Copy Data From One Table And Insert With Extra Values?

Jan 27, 2010

Is there a way to copy a row from one table and insert to another but at the same time insert extra values to destination table?Let's say source table Item has values:

ItemID
ItemType
ItemProducer
ItemModel

Destination table ItemHist:

ItemID
ChangeDate
ChangeReason
ChangedBy
ItemType
ItemProducer
ItemModel

I want to copy row from source table where itemid is 25, insert it into destination table and add extra values: ChangeDate, ChangeReason, ChangedBy. I tried:

INSERT INTO ItemHist (ItemID, ChangeDate, ChangeReason, ChangedBy, ItemType, ItemModel) VALUES (ItemHist.ChangeDate=GetDate(), ItemHist.ChangeReason="why not", ItemHist.ChangedBy="me")
SELECT ItemID, ItemType, ItemProducer, ItemModel FROM Item WHERE ItemId=25

but obviously it didn't work ("The name 'ChangeDate' is not permitted in this context. Only constants, expressions, or variables allowed here. Column names are not permitted.").
