I have a website where i already have User / Roles mechanism. What i am after is the if user update certain record i will include his username against that record thats easy enough. But if that row have multiple coulmns i want to save which coulmn he/she updated?How can i compare old and new data have save this information?

I would like to send the logged-on user's username to a variable, to input this value to a custom-designed stored procedure on my SQL database (for recording search statistics).Does anyone know how I can harness the current logged-on users username? I am using VB. Will the following achieve the result?session(username)If so, how do I implement this? I tried using "Current_User" in the SQL stored procedure, but obviously this did not record the ASP.NET user. Also, if the current user has not logged onto the site, I would like the "username" value to be "annonymous".

I'm just stuck as I can't work out the best way to do it,
For this applications, I will have a table that has a list of users who are "moderators" and they are able to see a part of the website that regular users cannot. I will NOT have a login or anything like that - I have a table that lists all the users who are moderators and if the user who is logged in is a moderator they simply see more of the website.
Right now I am able to get the username of the logged user (these are users who log into a Windows machine, and I simply get their login using a method from System.Security).
The thing I have no idea how to do is actually compare the username to the username in the database that I have. can anyone point me to a tutorial or something that searches through a database to compare the given value and see if there is an identical one in a specific database? I don't want the user to see the database, this is all done "behind the scenes".

I'm very new on VWD, but I got the hang of it for the past 2 weeks(thank you for all the videos posted here in ASP.NET),but I'm really weak on the coding part(vb & c#),except for all the sample shown on the tutorials. Anyways, I have a simple project that
does insert, update & delete to SQL express using the details view. But to complete my project, I need to add a button that will create an event to restore the very last record inserted in SQL and display it back into the details view for minor modification
and nserted again as the newest record with the mod. I'm doing this so user, doesn't need to re-key-in redundant information, like names, original date & time etc, and just make modification on the description of the last record.....

there is no record related to DropDownList1.SelectedValue. but as i am counting if(dt.rows.count) and i put break point on the bolded part it shows 1 record. how it can be possible?
I want users to select a record in the GridView and then have that record open up in the Detailsview. How would I go about getting these two tools to communicate?

i have a master page in my design and other form are bound to a context menu..
Now i have displayed the records in the gridview..all i wanted is after i select a record in the gridview it will display the selected record in detailview from another aspx form..
i was able to create the link to another aspx form but the data that it display is the first data from the gridview not the data that i select.
i have one parent grid on which if user clicks a record ,the child details should get displayed on same page.
for example :
There is one department details table and employees table:
if user selects a record in department details grid,then employees in the selected department should get displayed in the next grid in the same page

The page posts, when you click the update button, but the data never changes / updates.

Although it does not show any error and return to the index page, it cannot update the record because I can see the original record in the index page. Is there any mistakes I made?
I have tested the record insertion and it works. Therefore, I think it is not the problem on the database write permission.
I've been playing around with MVC lately, and was wondering how you could do this:
I have a view that displays a list of products, and against each product is a list of categories (in a combobox). I'm trying to find out how you can update a product's category when you select a category in the list. I know you could do something fairly simple with jQuery, but I'm trying to understand how submitting forms works with MVC.

I clicked the edit link button the "test" will shown in the textbox.I am change to "testing" and i will click the Update button.But it store in test.i update datetime also.The datetime has been updated..How to i update the record?..
Reason: The Form again post.So i enter with the "state=edit" and the data retrieve from the DB i will shown in the Field.After the Updation function is working.So the textbox value set into the DB value.
