Setting Up Mvc App On Server?

Mar 30, 2010

I have one dll containing my entire mvc app running on iis7 server. Should I instead have compiled controllers and business logic into separate dll's? Furthermore, should I install the non controller dll's in a separate server and if so do I sply configue a new virtual directory to the remote servr?

Web Services - Does The Server Timeout Setting Affect The Client Timeout Setting

Oct 15, 2010

I'm working with ASP.Net web services and am having a problem with a long-running process that takes about 5 minutes to complete, and it's timing out. To fix this, I was able to set the executionTimeout on the server's web.config to 10 minutes, and then set the .Timeout property on the Web Service object to approximately 9 minutes. Now, I'm worried that this may possibly cause some other web service calls to sit there for 10 minutes before they time out rather than the previous 90-100 seconds. I know the default on the client side is 100 seconds, but wasn't sure if updating the server's timeout setting would affect this.

Bottom line is - Is it safe to update the server's timeout setting to a long amount like 10 minutes, and rely on the default timeout on the client, or could this end up causing some problems?

SQL Server :: Setting Up The CASE Keyword In SQL From Web App?

Mar 7, 2011

I was wondering how I would go about setting up the CASE keyword in SQL from my Web app. I have a table where I need to update anywhere between 20 and 300 rows with different values. My table looks like this

ID EventID SeatType SeatCount Status Comments

On my page, these rows are listed in a table with a textarea to add comments. So when I click a button I need to update All the comments for all the users of a certain "EventID".I think my SQL Statement should go something Like this:

UPDATE Events
SET Comments =
CASE [code]....

Is that correct? I would be getting the ID and comment from each row of the table. Also (using C#) what would be the most efficient way to get this information into the query? I was thinking to use a for statement but I hear many string concatenations requires lots of processing?

Setting Up Web Application Under IIS 7 On Windows Server 2008 Box

Feb 16, 2010

I've developed my .net web application in Visual Studio 2005. It's been running in production on a hosted server. We recently brought in-house our own servers and configured one as a web server. I am trying to set up my web application over there and am getting your typical errors like the resource cannot be found. If you could point me to a good link, that would be great, too. I know I am having very elementary problems like creating the correct virtual directory, etc.

SQL Server :: Setting Permissions For Website Visitors?

Sep 14, 2010

I have my SqlServer 2005 database at a web host. I recently figured out how to set permissions for the stored procedures (see this link if you face the same problem:

[URL]

Now I wonder: What permissions should I give the website's visitors?

In a stored procedure's Properties window, I have three availabale users, the db owner (the db name), "guest" and "public". My bet is on public.

As far as permission types go, I hev the following available:

Alter, Control, Execute, Take Ownership, and View Definition. My guess is that the one of interest is Execute, correct?

In other words, should I set all stored procedures to Execute for public (not that I seem to have the permission to do that myself - I get an error message when I try to alter them)? If so, could I ask the web host to set them globally for me? Or should I only set stored procedure using UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE to Execute?

C# - Setting HttpCacheability.Public Also Cache The Page On The Server?

Mar 24, 2010

I have these lines in my global.asax (basically because of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2469348/can-i-add-my-caching-lines-to-global-asax)

The thing I want to now understand is whether this code purely adds the HTTP headers to the page or does it also make .Net cache this page on the server for 300 seconds?

Response.Cache.SetExpires(DateTime.Now.AddSeconds(300));
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Public);

Setting A Server Control Property From The Content Page?

Oct 27, 2010

I need to validate a textbox to ensure the submit date is older than Today. I wanted to use a CompareValidator to do that, but unfortunately the following code doesn't work:

<asp:CompareValidator ID="cvtbDateExpiration" ControlToValidate="tbDateExpiration"
Operator="GreaterThan" Type="Date" ValueToCompare="<%= DateTime.Today %>"
ErrorMessage="Card has expired" runat="server" />

The compiler tells me that ValueToCompare="<%= DateTime.Today %>" is wrong: "This is not scriptlet. Will be output as plain text."

Is there a simple way to achieve this (without setting it using the Code Behind)?

Is Setting The Value Of Server.ScriptTimeout Enough To Prevent Page Timeouts

Dec 20, 2010

On an administrative page with a long running process we're setting the following:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
this.Server.ScriptTimeout = 300;
//other code
}

Is this enough that should prevent that page from timing out as it does what it needs to? I have no control over the process and how long it runs but we've found that 5 minutes is more than enough time, yet we're still getting intermittent errors of:

System.Web.HttpException: Request timed out.

We've tried upping the value to 600 with really no difference and in any testing we've done we can never get the actual process to run for that long. Is there elsewhere that we need to be setting timeout values that won't affect the entire application and only the specific page we need the longer timeout value on?

Setting Optimum Http Caching Headers And Server Params In .Net MVC And IIS 7.5?

Sep 13, 2010

I have an ASP.Net site (happens to be MVC, but that's not relevant here) with a few pages I'd like cached really well.

Specifically I'd like to achieve:

output cached on the server for 2 hours.if the file content on the server changes, that output cache should be flushed for that page
cached in the browser for 10 minutes (i.e. don't even ask the server if it's that fresh)when the browser does make an actual subsequent request, I'd like it to use etags, so that the server can return a 304 if not modified.

(note - time values above are indicative examples only)
1) and 2) I can achieve by Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Server)
I know 3) can be achieved by using max-age and cache-control:private
I can emit etags with Response.Cache.SetETagFromFileDependencies();

but I can't seem to get all of these things to work together. Here's what I have:

Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.ServerAndPrivate);
Response.Cache.SetRevalidation(HttpCacheRevalidation.AllCaches);
Response.Cache.SetETagFromFileDependencies();
Response.Cache.SetValidUntilExpires(true);
Response.Cache.SetMaxAge(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(60 * 10));

In particular:

can browsers do both 3) and 4) like that? When Firefox issues a new request after it expires in the local cache, it does indeed send the etag the server responded with before, but I get a 200 response.setting the variables like above, where would I set the duration of the output caching?

Visual Studio :: Setting A Default Value In The Server Explorer For Table Column?

Jul 9, 2010

I added a DateTime column to a table in my database through the Server Explorer. Because the team lead for this project wasn't savvy on nullable types, one of the requirements was that there be no null values in the database. This requires me to program all sorts of useless code into the system, but that's another story. My problem arises when assigning a default value to this column. I typed the following into the cell for the "Default Value or Binding":

1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM

When I went to inspect the content of the table, I found that all of the dates had been populated with:

1/1/1900 12:00:00 AM
