Small Performance Test On A Web Service?
Apr 9, 2010
I'm trying to develop a small application that test how many requests per second can my service support but I think I'm doing something wrong. The service is in an early development stage, but I'd like to have this test handy in order to check in time to time I'm not doing something that decrease the performance. The problem is that I cannot get the web server or the database server go to the 100% of CPU.
I'm using three different computers, in one is the web server (WinSrv Standard 2008 x64 IIS7), in other the database (Win 2K - SQL Server 2005) and the last is my computer (Win7 x64 ultimate), where I'll run the test. The computers are connected through a 100 ethernet switch. The request POST is 9 bytes and the response will be 842 bytes.
The test launches several threads, and each thread has a "while" loop, in each loop it creates a WebRequest object, performs a call, increment a common counter and waits between 1 and 5 millisencods, then it do it again:
static Int32 counter = 0;
static void Main(string[] args)
{
ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 250;
[Code]....
If I run the test neither of the computers do an excesive CPU usage. Let's say I get a X requests per second, if I run the console application two times at the same moment, I get X/2 request per second in each one... but still the web server is on 30% of CPU, the database server on 25%...
I've tried to remove the thread.sleep in the loop, but it doesn't make a big difference.
I'd like to put the machines to the maximun, to check how may requests per second they can provide. I guessed that I could do it in this way... but apparently I'm missing something here...

Say I need to populate 4 or 5 dropdowns w/ items from a database. Each drop down will have < 15 items in it. These items almost never change.
Now I could query the DB each time the page is accessed or I could grab the values from a custom class that would check to see if they already exist in ASP.Net's cache and only if they don't query the DB to update the cache.
It's trivial for me to write but I'm unsure if the performace would be better or not. I think it would be (although not likely anything huge).

I have a web performance test which contains a request whose response is greater than 5MB, and the Extract Hidden Fields rule fails to find (necessary and required!) hidden fields in the response. Response header contains
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Transfer-Encoding : chunked
Vary : Accept-Encoding, User-Agent
Cache-Control : private
Content-Type : text/plain; charset=utf-8
Date : Sat, 19 Feb 2011 15:24:38 GMT
Server : Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-AspNet-Version : 2.0.50727
X-Powered-By : ASP.NET
Other than that and the response size, there is nothing remarkable about this scenario. In fact, this same test succeeds when a smaller data set is used. I suspect the Web Performance Test framework is having issues parsing the "chunked" encoding or sheer volume of data. Ahem, how can I obtain these required hidden fields from my response? ie resolutions, work arounds, converting auto-extraction to manual, etc.

I have a query that I want to test the performance of when the query is included directly in the SqlDataSource versus when I call a stored procedure. Does anyone have suggestions on how I would be able to closely watch the actual steps here? I was thinking of turning on tracing and adding Trace.Write for each of the events that fire along the way. This doesn't seem efficient and I wanted to see if there was a better approach.

I am new to LDAP so it is a bit confusing for me. I am converting a Legacy application from ASP to ASP.Net. That application is using LDAP so i have to find an alternative/equivalent of this.
My questions are:
1- LDAP is still used or obselete?
2- Equivalent/alternate of this?
3- How it is different from?
4- How can i setup a small test LDAP server if i have to test it locally ?
5- Any examples/source code/tutorials?
I have googled it and i know the basic concept of LDAP but i was unable to get the proper answer for all of the above.

I'm making a app for a bank, but it doesnt manage very important data. I have two problems, it will run over a VERY large LAN network protected by all kinds of security(antivirus and firewalls) and the bandwidth in certain regions is as low as 56kbps.(Its a desktop app with a web server backend connected by web services)
From the security point of view all I want is to prevent someone from executing the web services from some other source or app results in change in the database . I'm thinking of each desktop app installed with a install code, this will be hashed and required as a parameter for every function call and will act as an authentication ticket? Is this good enough? Are they better SIMPLER means?
For performance, how do I measure or know if the web service will send and receive data at a decent rate?

I am working on form, which send input to webservice via post and display result. It must be simple, and it works fine on localhost. But when I try to use it agains live I have error 500.
Here is my code:
WebRequest request = WebRequest.Create("http://localhost:3192/WebServices/Export.asmx/" + uxAction.SelectedValue);
UTF8Encoding encoding = new UTF8Encoding();
byte[] data = encoding.GetBytes(uxRequest.Text);
request.Method = "POST";
request.ContentType = "text/xml; charset=utf-8";
request.ContentLength = data.Length;

I am not able to override the design-time URL of a webservice in my web config.
I must be doing something stupid
My Dll is called SMSLibrary2X which has a web reference to a UserService web service like this (taken from the app.config of the dll:
<setting name="SMSLibrary2x_TAMService_UserService" serializeAs="String">
<value>https://devss.ourdomain.ca:4452/UserService.asmx</value>
</setting>
, however, in the web reference, the URL property is [URL]
As I understand it, the app.config for the DLL is not really pertinent, except perhaps to copy the setting into the app.config of the unit test project.
So, In the SMSLibrary2xTests web.config file, I have this:
[Code]....
However when my unit tests run, always pick up the URL of the web service that I defined when I added the Web Reference to the SMSLibrary2x DLL project, which is fine for design time, but not appropriate when I want to point to different versions at deploy time (dev, QA, prod, etc). I just can't seem to get it to pick up the proper URL.

My web.config is set up so that I don't have to change anything between deploy from UAT and Production. I can determine what machine it is running on and then programatically pick the correct connection string etc from the web.config based on the name.
Now we are adding a call to a web service which now causes us to have to make a change at deploy time. We set a "Region" flag in the web.config and then in coded an IF statement to call the appropriate webservice based on the flag so all we'd have to change is the "T" to a "P" when moving to production. But then hardcoding a web service in the application is not what we want to do. Nor do we want to change the web service address in the web.config.
Is there any way we can do something like the following to be able to not have to change the web.config at deploy?
It would be something like:
1. Grab current Machine name
2. Look in web.config for corresponding machine name web service reference (like we do for connection strings etc)
3. Use that web service in the processing.

I have added a web reference using the wsdl file that was provided to me. I also created an instance from the proxy class as follows :
Code:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim DLObj As New WebReference.DrivingLicenseInfoServiceService
But after this am totally confused on the next steps and how to pass username and password and test the service connectivity.I have attached the autogenerated code.

I have developed a website in asp.net framework 2 . This website is being hosted in two different servers without any change in code. My issue is about the performance of these 2 sites. One website is taking much time for inserting datas to the DB (SQL server 2005). 2 websites are having different DB server.
I think the issue is for the DB server. How can we rectify the DB performance while insertion and Is there any other cause for this permance issue?

I am not sure if this is the right forum. I can not find a forum for LINQ.
I am working on an application using LINQ. Application performance is not up to par and my tests show that it is LINQ queries that are slow. I was wondering if anybody can recommend where I can find an article about optimizing LINQ performance maybe by compilation or other methods.

I am creating a service oriented application where trying to have everything using services....however there is something I am not sure of , I am having a page that calls the database at the page load...so what would be better and faster?? to call database in pageload , or to call wcf service from javascript during javascript load ??btw , I am using a repeater in the page , but I have created somekind of an engine to create the suitable html so...I'll be creating the repeaters html using the wcf and resend it back to the page If I am using a wcf service at the start.

i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website).When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message.On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes.But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done.
Is that normal behaviour?I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?EDIT: it keeps running when the whole process is started in IIS
