Add Simple Security And Measure Performance Of Web Service?
Jul 8, 2010
I'm making a app for a bank, but it doesnt manage very important data. I have two problems, it will run over a VERY large LAN network protected by all kinds of security(antivirus and firewalls) and the bandwidth in certain regions is as low as 56kbps.(Its a desktop app with a web server backend connected by web services)
From the security point of view all I want is to prevent someone from executing the web services from some other source or app results in change in the database . I'm thinking of each desktop app installed with a install code, this will be hashed and required as a parameter for every function call and will act as an authentication ticket? Is this good enough? Are they better SIMPLER means?
For performance, how do I measure or know if the web service will send and receive data at a decent rate?

I am writing a program to measure the latency(response round trip time) for a web service. I need to have this at client side.
My initial plan is to store the time at which request is sent and then calculate the difference in time when we recieve a response from the web service. Is this the correct way to measure latency of web service. This has some overhead because of storing time and all. How can this be done?
Another option is to attach a timestamp with the SOAP request. But the server should return the timestamp. This will not be possible in case of third party web services.

I'm currently developing a few ASP.NET MVC2/.NET 3.5SP1 web-services that are mostly IO bound (execute a couple HTTP back end calls + DB write per request) and i'm getting really poor load-testing performance.
To make sure it wasn't something in my application, I created a brand new ASP MVC 2 project (project -> new -> "ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application", based on .NET 3.5 SP1), added a "TestController" with the following action:
[Code]....
I deployed this on a dual-core test server, running Win2008 and IIS7, Application Pool set to "integrated mode". I have the following in my C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727Aspnet.config:
[Code]....
Just in case, I added the following DWORD key in the registry:
[Code]....
I verified I was able to access my test action from a regular browser and started a load test from another machine on the same network: user load set to 500, no "think" time.
The following is what I observe on the machine running the loadtest after about 8 minutes:
req/s: 5.98avg response time: 78.4 secondsno errors whatsoevernote that the local CPU is 1-2% On the test server, this is what I observe using perfmon:
request current: flat line at 501request execution time: flat line at 1506 ms avg => this makes sense though I don't understand why I see the request coming back after 78 seconds at the other end% proc time avg < 1%request queued as well as all others asp.net v2.0.50727 counters at 0 I don't get it. I believe the expected behavior would be to see about 333 req/s (500/1.5) with a avp response time of 1.5xx seconds...

I'm trying to develop a small application that test how many requests per second can my service support but I think I'm doing something wrong. The service is in an early development stage, but I'd like to have this test handy in order to check in time to time I'm not doing something that decrease the performance. The problem is that I cannot get the web server or the database server go to the 100% of CPU.
I'm using three different computers, in one is the web server (WinSrv Standard 2008 x64 IIS7), in other the database (Win 2K - SQL Server 2005) and the last is my computer (Win7 x64 ultimate), where I'll run the test. The computers are connected through a 100 ethernet switch. The request POST is 9 bytes and the response will be 842 bytes.
The test launches several threads, and each thread has a "while" loop, in each loop it creates a WebRequest object, performs a call, increment a common counter and waits between 1 and 5 millisencods, then it do it again:
static Int32 counter = 0;
static void Main(string[] args)
{
ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 250;
[Code]....
If I run the test neither of the computers do an excesive CPU usage. Let's say I get a X requests per second, if I run the console application two times at the same moment, I get X/2 request per second in each one... but still the web server is on 30% of CPU, the database server on 25%...
I've tried to remove the thread.sleep in the loop, but it doesn't make a big difference.
I'd like to put the machines to the maximun, to check how may requests per second they can provide. I guessed that I could do it in this way... but apparently I'm missing something here...

So I started a new solution in vs2010b2.
1. I added a WebService project to this solution.
2. I added a WebApplication project to this solution.
3. I clicked Add Web Reference
4. I clicked Web services on the local machine
5. Web Services listed on my local machine:
"There was an error while enumerating services on local machine:
Active Directory Services cannot find the web server. A possible cause for this is an incompatibility between versions of Internet Information Server (IIS) on the client and the server. Another possible cause is that IIS is not installed on the local machine, or the user identity under which you are running may not have permissions to view websites on this machine. To view websites on this machine, make sure that you run Visual Studio as administrator. On Windows Vista computers with IIS installed, make sure that
IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility feature is enabled."
I have Visual Studio 2010 beta and Visual Studio 2008 Professional installed on this computer. I do not have any IIS server installed. Do I require a IIS server when coding webservices+webapplications?[URL]

Now I want to upload and download photos like .jpg or .jpeg files. But my question to you how shall I write the methods to be able to download and upload photo files to the WCF web service from my client?

The following 'hello world' webservice works fine on my computer (VS2008) but I can't get it to work on the server--either from an aspx page (below) or when invoked directly. I get '404 page not found' on the direct invocation.
[Code]....
I added the HttpGet and HttpPost to test the web service directly on the server. I can open the page and invoke it, but then get the 404 page not found response.

I have a simple web service that isn't working with a standard jQuery call. The code is below. The jQuery will execute and succeed, but on debugging, the service argument is always null. I've had it separated as 4 string params in a json string and that didn't work either. I must be missing something on the config side, but I can tell what it is.

I followed an example on how to create a simple web service that converts celsius to fahrenheit. It seems to work alright. After the conversion it outputs the new value in xml. What do you do with the value that's in xml? Do you use an Xmlreader to read it from the xml, or what is usually done after the value is generated in xml?

I am writing two ASP.NET apps. One is a web service that provides xml data and the other is a web client that will use the service to display and manipulate data. I would like for the web service to do the membership authentication and authorization. Is there any way to simply point the login controls in my client application to the web service instead of to a database. I assume I would have to provide the necesarry methods in my web service interface, which would then use the membership provider database I created and pass the results back through to the client.
Is this possible? I have seen many articles on security provisioin from a web service but none has really been what I am looking for. I was hoping that, since my service and my client are both written in ASP.NET, there might be some built functionality that would benefit me.

I created a database for user authentication. After I pass loging parameters to the stored procedure in the database and they return a user ID for that user I use the following line for authentication:

User gets authenticated but the problem is that ASP.NET does not recognise the user as authenticated until the page is refreshed.

I have developed a website in asp.net framework 2 . This website is being hosted in two different servers without any change in code. My issue is about the performance of these 2 sites. One website is taking much time for inserting datas to the DB (SQL server 2005). 2 websites are having different DB server.
I think the issue is for the DB server. How can we rectify the DB performance while insertion and Is there any other cause for this permance issue?

Is there a technical/performance limit on the number of roles an application handles? I'm in the process of designing an application which I forsee having a lot of roles created, to be able to handle the degree of granularity the system should have (e.g., permissions per project, where there could be a lot of projects).
Would you recommend another approach other than using roles for this kind of granularity?

I am not sure if this is the right forum. I can not find a forum for LINQ.
I am working on an application using LINQ. Application performance is not up to par and my tests show that it is LINQ queries that are slow. I was wondering if anybody can recommend where I can find an article about optimizing LINQ performance maybe by compilation or other methods.

Is there a way to measure the time elapsed for a web page to execute?
And if so, is it safe to use that figure to estimate the speed of the web page as the number of users grow and the database grows. Ie: if the page currently takes 1 second to process through x amount of rows in the database, to estimate it would take 2 seconds with 2x rows?
