Testing Speeds (and What Causes Long Delays) On An Intranet Website?
Mar 11, 2010
I have an intranet site which is randomly timing out on pages. I have 5 similar sites and none of them have this problem. I'd like to test out what is causing it to time out, but it's an intranet site so many web testers can't reach it.

ASP.net 3.5 (.aspx as frontend)

I have an an intranet website running under IIS6 (under a specific port, not the default one) with a integrated windows authentication enabled and uses an application pool configured with a service account. the issue is, if I access the website using the server name with a fully qualified domain in the URL, it throws a login prompt (doesn't work even if enter my windows login credentials), but if I use the IP address of the server then it works fine. I need to do to get the URL with server name working.[URL]

We are having an issue with the windows authentication and IIS restart for asp.net application Our environment is an intranet site (an asp.net application ) that uses windows authentication, uses integrated security application pool, physical path credentials are set for a service account, who is admin for sql server, IIS etc. web.config - Connection string has Integrated Security = true, authentication = Windows, and authorization - deny *, allow = security group. Anytime we start - stop service (or restart) (IIS); and hit the website thru some other machine IE, it fails to show the website (401.2), and any subsequent hit to the website doesn't go thru.
However when we start the service, and hit the website on server's (where website is deployed) browser first time then everything works fine for subsequent hits from anywhere as long as authenticated on corp net and member of security group configured in web.config. This behavior however goes away if we uncheck the configuration "Enable Kernel-mode Authentication" on the asp.net application. ( but then Firefox browser stops working with this configuration!!) Why such behavior? In the documentation it states its recommended to keep it enabled. What is recommended way of publishing a website with windows authentication enabled? Any side effects of "Enable Kernel-mode Authentication" being unchecked ( other than what we found for firefox not working) Environment : IIS 7.5 windows 2008 Server R2, VS2008, SQL Server 2008, ASP.NET 2.0

I'm quite newbie and i need to give access to the website at a very low cost, but just few people, how did you guys manage it, to hide the connection link to the public. I mean is there a better way or not to manage this. I don't know if I'm clear. What would be the cheapest way to manage this user account?

We have developed a website in asp.net using windows authentication and deployed it on the intranet (IIS v6.0). Most of the times, when users try to access this website they are taken straight to the website, but occasionally some users get a prompt to enter their windows username and password. I understand that this could be caused because of several reasons like:
Cached active directory password. Recently active directory password changed. Active directory account locked out. I want to fix this issue for good because it is annoying the users.

Over the years I have had a few of the websites I have developed submitted for penetration testing by clients. Most of the time the issues that are highlighted when the results return relate to the default behaviour of ASP .Net such as possible cross site scripting attacks etc.Are there any good articles on which vulnerabilities exist by default in an ASP .Net application and secondly are there any good checklists to follow which will help prepare a site in advance?

I've made a simple website in ASP.NET MVC Framework with users, articles etc., and images to users profiles. There is a simple static class for image manipulation (resizing, cropping and saving images on hard drive), placed in "Helper" directory. I wonder what to do with the code to preserve MVC principles and make whole website more unit testing friendly.

When my Application face a long-time process, i.e fetch a query (SELECT a, b, c FROM d)This query needs 10 seconds to be completed in the MSSQL Management Studio, but when the ASP.NET application try to fetch it, it refuse to return any response to any other requests made on that Server.
I am hosting my Application on VPS Server with good specifications, and I am giving this example the (SELECT a, b, c FROM d) just to tell you the issue, it can be any process, maybe processing a movie, or even fetching some data through external API that is experiencing some slow-down,or whatever.

We currently have two applications that will be using this. One is a web application, the other a desktop app. Both of these require users to login/authenticate, the same credentials can be used for either application.I want to build an automatic login mechanism that will fill in all the various login/order details and be able to call this from either app mentioned above. I've been thinking that the best way to do this is to pass this information encrypted through the URL. ie https://mysite.com/TakePayment.aspx?id=GT2jkjh3....
Since we don't want to integrate the payment processing too tightly into the desktop app to reduce our PCI scope, we decided to have it open the browser to a central, secured payment page through a simple shell execute with the full URL causing the default browser to open that page.Originally we were using AES for the encryption, but this is currently being re-examined as we would prefer not having to give out the key to the end user (AES is symmetric, symmetric encryption = both parties need the private key, why bother even encrypting then since we're going to be distributing the app?) So I'm looking at switching it over to use Public Key Encryption with the built in RSA routines within .NET
After coding up the RSA portion I noticed most examples on the net used 1024bits for the key-length, I went with this and now have our portal working with public key encryption, however the URLs generated are much much longer than when I was using AES so it made me start researching what the max limits for URLs are. http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/misc/urllength.html Says that IE is the limiting browser at about 2048 characters in the path portion. My initial tests with the RSA encryption show my urls will be around 1400 chars long.My questions boil down to this:1) Is there a better way for passing information from a desktop app to a website that I'm not thinking of? I'd prefer it be just as easy to use from another web page as it is from the desktop, hence my current solution.2) Is 1024 bit RSA keys necessary? Or overkill for something like this? A shorter key would mean shorter encrypted text right?3) Are there any other unforeseen problems with URLs in the 1200-1400 character range? Proxies? Firewalls? Web-Accelerators?

I have a large(ish) text-box on my page that needs to hold a website URL. The text-box is reasonably wide however most URLs will not fit in on a single line. I want the website address to wrap a single line like this:
[URL]
However what my textbox is doing is this:
[URL]
Does anyone know how to automatically wrap a string that does not contain line feeds / white space? (Yes - Wrap is set to true!)

Recently for a class to implement unit test for one of its private methods I used PrivateObject by creating private accessor instead of refelection, to which i received a code review comment as below
"My main concern with Private Object is the use of object[] in constructor. It replaces strong typing enforced by compiler with JavaScript-style run-time error detection.Consequently , personally, I would not recommend it."
Comments above confused me beacuse as per my understanding reflection also needs the object[] to invoke any method.

In development, our Asp.Net 4 website takes a fairly lengthy time to start after the project libraries are built
We do a fair amount of population of statics etc, but not enough to justify the length of time it takes the app to come up (probably 3-4 minutes)
We aren't building the website, just the libraries, and batch != true in the compilation element in the .config file.
I will try log some diagnostics, but any other pointers would be useful

We have a site that upon every page load, it tries to contact a sql server on the local machine. It does not contact localhost, but the actual IP of the local machine. It fails, then contacts the correct DB server for membership information. In dev, apparently the server was contacting the local sqlexpress server, then contacting the correct DB as well. Only when we stopped the localmachine dev SQLExpress could we recreate the issue. We had removed entries in machine.config, and web.config to .sqlexpress, but the problem still persists.

To work with the ASP.NET 2.0 Membership and Role, we will use Forms authentication for the public Internet.
On the other hand, we use Windows authentication for Intranet applications. uestion: In a website with Windows authentication, can I still have some kind ofole management for different
groups of the Intranet users? If yes, how?

I'm trying to enable automatic Window authentication working on our ASP.NET Intranet. I've changed the Authentication on our IIS 7.5 server from Anonymous to Windows Authentication Enabled only, and changed the Web.config file for the website to:
<authentication mode="Windows" />
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
The Windows login box appears when accessing the website via IE 8, I enter valid credentials, but the login window keeps reappearing as if it does not accept my credentials. By repeatedly cancelling the login box it disappears, and my login name can be viewed on the website. Is there any possible reason for the login box to keep popping up even though valid credentials are being entered? I've restarted the servers / cleared browser cache etc. Also, ideally I would like the user to enter the login details once in the login box and not be required to reenter login details whenever he reopens the browser.
