UI Pattern To Allow User To Add Item With Unlimited Sub-items?
Jul 19, 2010
I'm writing an ASP.NET app. I need to include a page where the user can add an item which has several sets of subitems, each of which sets is unlimited in number. The subitems themselves contain between 10 and 15 fields, so need a fair bit of UI space.
As an example of what I mean, the user needs to be able to add a Business record to the system, including any number of Employee records and any number of Asset records.
The way I normally do this is by using a MultiView control with a set of tabs at the top. The tabs switch between the Views of the MultiView. The first tab will be for the Business record, the second will be for Employee records, and the third for Asset records. The Views for Employees and Assets are initially empty bar a button to add a new Employee (or Asset). When this button is clicked, the page is posted back and a user control is added dynamically to capture the details of the Employee (or Asset).
There is one save button that saves the whole object graph to the database.
This is quite complicated to program and maintain and I usually encounter headaches to do with managing ViewState for the dynamic user controls. Obviously, the ViewState on the page can also become quite large, making the page quite slow.
The advantage is that it is quite an intuitive UI for the user to understand, and the user can add everything and check it all before saving anything to the database.
how to create unlimited user control without losing the data... My problem is on postback.. i searched a lot but m not get solution.. my question is how to recreate unlimited controls(textbox, dropdown) and how to maintain the data in the controls.. Now am able to create dynamic usercontrol (unlimited) when Button click event using for loop but not able to maintain the data during postback.
i'm building a web application with asp.net c# and i have a class that i want to use in multiple pages witouth instantiate it every time. I need to load the data in it and never lose them during the user session time. I thought about the singleton-pattern but it shared the instance of the class beetween browsers.
We have an ASP.NET MVC site that uses Entity Framework abstractions with Repository and UnitOfWork patterns. What I'm wondering is how others have implemented navigation of complex object graphs with these patterns. Let me give an example from one of our controllers:
[code]....
It's a registration process and pretty much everything hangs off the POCO class Person. In this case we're caching the person through the registration process. I've now started implementing the latter part of the registration process which requires access to data deeper in the object graph. Specifically DPA data which hangs off Legal inside Country.
The code above is just mapping out the model information into a simpler format for the ViewModel. My question is do you consider this fairly deep navigation of the graph good practice or would you abstract out the retrieval of the objects further down the graph into repositories?
Does anyone have a working pattern for converting a GET-POST-GET pattern to asny?
I'm encountering the following issues:
1. You cannot mix Sync and Async action methods SubmitForm(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), SubmitFormCompleted() ... (because the resolver gets all confused ... it doesn't use the HTTP verb to decide who to target. BTW: I think that's poor design, or a bug)
2. Renaming the get method name to something else eg: SubmitFormConfirmation(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), SubmitFormCompleted() would be very awkward if it works ... because you have to doctor the <form markup to specify an action name.
3. You cannot give them all async names SubmitFormAsync(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), submitFormCompleted(), because the call just keeps malfunctioning. It sometime even behaves as if you are requesting a delete of something.
Can someone give an insight from an actually working sample.
Now that the next version of ASP.NET MVC is being prototyped and previewed (ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 came out a couple of weeks ago), I wonder if we should call the attention of the Core Dev team (S Hanselman, Phil Haack and all) to this "feature."there a easy/non tacky way of associating subdomains → areas?Something like: [URL]Also, whats the best accepted design pattern in implementing PRG pattern in ASP.NET MVC? I guess it should also get some official loving in MVC 3.
We have a big portal that needs user registration to allow them use its services. It's already done in .NET and SOL Server 2005. we are in the phase now of discovering all the problems of the current registration system to build a new robust flexible one that can be extended easily and can be more usable for all services.
I have a list with 2 sorts of items. Items that have actual values (1,2,3,4 etc) and items that are like group headings so all their values are set to 0. If someone decides to select a group heading - which has a value of 0, is it possible to redirect them to my 'Select an item' item which has a value of ""?
If worse comes to worse, I can just reconstruct the entire list, although if possible I'd like to avoid it.
On a button click, I want to select all items in a listbox, the items will look like this for example: '14/5', then I want to extract the digits on each side of the slash for each item. The digits will be different every time and can consist of any number of digits. Do I need a loop to be sure to get all items?
What I want is that when user clicks on any of the "lnk1" link button in the lsit that repeater renders, the link should be replaced with the label "label1"..ie when the user clicks on "Make Default" link, it should be replaced with "Yes" label
Now when I click 2 link buttons, both get their label "Yes" displayed where as I want only one link button to display Yes ie the one which has been clciked and rest of the items should display "Make Default" link button only.
ie Only ONE item should be displaying "Yes" label...now how do I iterate through the repeater items to set only ONE item as default and not multiple ??
Is there a way that we can change the color (which is defaulted to blue) when the items in the list box are selected? If so can you provide me a sample for it?
There are 25 items in the list. I have selected one item at the time of project creation. But If I edit the project then the list box is showing more selected items instead of one item in the details page.
I have a web page with paypal. In the page user add items to list then buy it. when user add item to list i block that item in stock until user buy or delete that item. Now my problem is when user add item in the list and then close the broswer from IE close button , the item get blocked. I want to rollback the added items when user close the browser from IE button.
In order to maintain user uploaded images in website becomes very tough as the number of images are increasing. In the long run the available disk space will come to 0 bytes.
Amazon generally provides unlimited space for their S3 service. If we want to provide unlimited space to our website what are the possible ways?

I have created an ASP.NET Intranet Application in framework 2.0.
I have deployed this application on my Local Intranet Server and client are accessing the application in thier browsers. What is happening is that i have set session timeout value to 90 mins but it still move to redirect page after 5 or 6 mins inactivity.
My requirement is whenever a user logged in the application, the application should never go on the login page back, bu when user clicks log out button then it should redirect on login page.
[RegularExpression(@"S*[a-zs]S*s*", ErrorMessage = "Please add category name letters only")]
This works fine if I input some words something like this...test test. But if I try to do this... test test test, I will get the ErrorMessage that I implemented. The thing is that I don't know how many words are going to put in by the end user. Is there a way where unlimted whitespaces could put in place? I am using VS2010
1. let say i have a table for ITEMS including (item id,item description id (FK to the ITEM Description tabe), item price, etc) and have ITEM Description look up table having (item descriptionid, item description),.
so what is better to use the ITEM DESCRIPTION look up table and store the item description id in the items table
or

2. I am working on an MVC web application using LINQ, now if i want to modify the SQL server tables which i have created for example modify some of the foreign key properties will the effect be directly reflected on any new inserted or deleted records or i have to create a new LINQ to SQL class?
I recently upgraded one of my hosting accounts on Godaddy to unlimited in order to eliminate several redundant hosting accounts. I ftp'd a website and published the databases into the unlimited account ok but I'm getting server errors which seem to be caused by the fact that the primary website is somehow interfering with the website which was transfered into the hosting account. The latest error is
I am trying to write a function that can be called to run a stored procedure. I pass the stored procedure name, followed by as many parameters as I need to run the procedure. I am able to do this by using the params keyword, so my function looks something like this;
[Code]....
How can I determine what the data type of the parameter is? Maybe I need to alter the string[] part, above?
