Using Hosting Companies "404 Error Behavior" To Implement URL Routing?
Feb 10, 2010
Many hosting companies let you define which page will be shown to the user if the user goes to a page that does not exist. If you define some .aspx page then it will execute and be shown.
My question is, why not use this for routing. since I can parse the users URL and then do a server.transfer to the page I want. I checked and there is no redirect sent to the client and the http headers are HTTP/1.1 200 OK.
So, is this a good idea for servers that don't have ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 or if you are not using MVC?

How are control panels for hosting companies made? My hosting company Winhost.com has a nice control panel that changes settings on their IIS somehow, how do they make these sort of things hook into IIS? I'm not looking for a solution just a general idea of what they're actually using to do this

I'm building a website that stores a number of articles. The URL for each articles implements URL routing in the form /Articles/{categoryid}/{articleslug}.
Some articles have links to a graphics file. The link does not specify the full path so I'm storing the graphics file at /Articles/{categoryid}/{articleslug}/graphic.jpg.
This works fine on my desktop. But when I deployed the site to a shared hosting account, the behavior is different.
Now, the link only works if I store the graphics file at /Articles/{categoryid}/graphic.jpg. In other words, on my desktop, the {articleslug} is assumed to be a directory, but on the web it is assumed to be the name of the current page.
Does anyone know why the behavior changes? You can seen an example at http://www.blackbeltcoder.com/Articles/asp/creating-website-thumbnails-in-asp-net. Both the screenshot and download link near the top are broken links.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the way ASP.NET MVC implements routing.
From what is my current understanding, it seems my route string much have a "{controller}" and "{action}", otherwise it doesn't work?
How would I define the route that using a SearchController and Search action taking both SearchKeywords and SearchCaseSensitive arguments had the following URL?
domain/SearchKeywords/CaseSensitive
Even simpler, how do I map domain to controller SearchController and to Search?

We have a shopping cart product. I am trying to implement ASP.Net 4 URL Routing. The problem I have is with image and other resource folders. I can resolve all the links that are defined within the pages and in the code behind. But, some of the links come from html text entered by users.
Using absolute path is not an option. There are some work arounds. But, I want to avoid those work-arounds, because we don't want to burden the users. Is there a way to achieve this through URL Routing?
E.g. The image path derived from the rewritten page: [URL]
Is there a way to achieve this without any patch work?

I am using ASP.NET 4.0 Web Forms. I learned that, in order to optimize my Web Application for Search Engine, I must implement custom 404 page. But the way Microsoft tell us to implement custom 404 (within Web.Config file), that is not good for SEO. Microsoft says,
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericErrorPage.htm">
<error statusCode="404" redirect="Page-Not-Found.aspx" />
</customErrors>
But when the page is not found, IIS issue 302 redirect to Page-Not-Found.aspx page which is not good. So, I implemented custom 404 page using Routing technique that is available in ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 and 4.0. I used the following router in Global.asax page

I have an asp.net web site where I'm trying to resolve what looks like a problem with ASP.NET AJAX:
Microsoft JScript runtime error:
Sys.ArgumentTypeException: Object of
type
'Sys.Extended.UI.AccordionBehavior'
cannot be converted to type
'Sys.UI.Behavior'. Parameter name:
instance
I've googled around a lot, and looked at the code presented (see below, no idea what it means) but no luck.
I've tried changing scriptmanger scriptmode to release, and a bunch of other things too.
Details:
Visual Studio 2010
ASP.NET 4.0
Ajax control toolkit 4.0
jQuery 1.4.2
jQuery UI 1.8.5
JS Code the error occurs in, inside ScriptResource.axd:
dispose:function()
{
var c=this;
b.UI.Behavior.callBaseMethod(c,eb); --------- this line
var d=c._element;
if(d)
{
var f=c.get_name();
if(f)
d[f]=a;
var e=d._behaviors;
Array.remove(e,c);
if(!e.length)
d._behaviors=a;
delete c._element
}
}
Declaration of accordion control:
<%@ Register Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TagPrefix="atlas" %>
(snip)
<atlas:Accordion ID="menu" runat="server" SelectedIndex="0"
ContentCssClass="accordionContent" FadeTransitions="true" FramesPerSecond="30"
TransitionDuration="250" AutoSize="None" Width="270">
</atlas:Accordion>
*Update: *
Added accordion control declaration as requested, is there anything else I can add that could be useful?
Does anyone have any idea about this error at all - am I right in thinking it's MS AJAX not playing nicely with other javascript (probably jQuery UI) on the page?

I have built some ASP.NET websites in the past, mostly for local web applications. But this time I am looking to build a public website based on ASP.NET. The hosting and domain name is already in place but it is my job to create the site. I would like to use ASP.NET because I am most framiliar with it. I am just not positive the webserver supports it. I have tried creating a few different sites using different Net.Framework versions, but I always get a Runtime Error when I'm trying to access it across the internet. It tells me to change the customErrors value to OFF so I can see the error remotely. But I do that and for some reason its like its not seeing the Web.Config file I have. Because nothing changes and I still get the error. Any help would be great in figuring out if it supports ASP.NET. On another note I tried an ASP file which worked fine, but I'm not sure if theres a difference. Also if I make up a random url say [URL] I get the same error.

So i am hosting a project and am having troubles getting part of it to work. To give a brief explanation i have a page to add new items to a database, these items can be one of 3 times, pin, code , misc. I am having problems due to the fact that on a Multi add of items i cannot auto generate the key information field for a pin type item and it has to be manually inputted (barcode, misc both generate a random number and use that as its key info) so on the insertion of multiple pin items i prompt the user each time using a form i created from the following tutorial. [URL]
This process works fine when i am using the localhost and just testing my program from my own system. But when i host this off my server and go to it i get the following error when i hit submit and should queue up the loop of the form asking for pins. Showing a modal dialog box or form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a valid operation. Specify the ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly style to display a notification from a service application.

i am working on a project that you can subscribe with your company name and you can use all features of site specificly to your company. for example company abcd can get its own url from our website like
www.test.com/abcd/productlist.aspx
company efgh can also login with its own url and see its product list.
www.test.com/efgh/productlist.aspx
I am thinking on the approach that will use Global.ascx file to distinguish companies, i will write code to extract company name from url in global.ascx for every valid request and in all the pages i will put this.form.action = request.rawurl.

I work for an agency that has been responsible for maintaining a client's .net 3.5 website for a number of years along with another agency. Work is farmed out by the client to both agencies on a pretty much ad-hoc basis.
The site is quite old and has a structure and deployment process to match. The site is setup that developers have local copies of the sites. There is a staging environment, where client feedback and approval happens, followed by the live environment. There are a number of scenarios where work from one agency will be on the staging environment awaiting approval, and changes from the other agency need to go through staging, approval and deployed to live without the original changes being affected. Most of the time we get away with it but it's far from ideal as not all conflicts can be resolved.
Up until recently we had still been on Sourcesafe but have moved over to Subversion and are running into many more scenarios where work is overwritten. This obviously isn't a fault with subversion, rather that the locking of projects and files in Sourcesafe served as a good indicator to developers from both agencies that someone was working on that project or file. The process previously was that you checked out a file from sourcesafe and kept it checked out until changes went live (acknowledge that this is a rubbish process hence the desire to move away from sourcesafe and such a model)
The trouble is that even though we know that the way we do it now is bad, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to restructure the overall site and deployment process to make it "better". Some ideas we've pondered are:
Separate dev, test and live branches in subversion so we need to commit and build the appropriate branch before deploying (not really sure how to make that work)Single repository for both agencies but a separate staging environment for each. Staging environment could then reflect the changes assigned to each agencyA separate instance of the staging site for each branch

When I make a routing rule like
routes.MapRoute(
"Rule",
"Home_{action}/{id}",
new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id="" }
);
"Home_MyAction" works (no id here). But with
routes.MapRoute(
"Rule",
"Home_{action}_{id}",
new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id="" }
);
"Home_MyAction_" doesn't work (404 error).
Why is it so?

I have three asp.net 2.0 websites running on the same host server and recently upgraded to 3.5. After making changes necessary in the root web.config all sites run, but I've lost the stylesheet for the primary site.
Before the upgrade I had the following in the root web.config
<pages styleSheetTheme="Red" />
I got errors on this line because the upgraded web.config had another <pages> section. I tried adding the stylesheetTheme='Red" to that section and the primary website ran and looked right, but the subs got an error that there was no StyleSheetTheme="Red".
Each site has it's own stylesheets. How can I restore the stylesheettheme to the primary site without putting it in the root webconfig? Or, is there another way to handle this?

I'm working on a new project and I would like to use forms authentication to protect the necessary pages. The project is going to be focused on companies where a company would create an account and have multiple users. Each company should have its own data and should not be able to see other companies' data. What would be the best way to go about this? I've considered using a subdomain for each company which would tell the application which membership provider to use. I've also considered using an additional credential such as company ID to specify which company the user is logging into.
