How To Implement Custom 404 Page In .NET Web Form Application Using Routing
Jun 19, 2010
I am using ASP.NET 4.0 Web Forms. I learned that, in order to optimize my Web Application for Search Engine, I must implement custom 404 page. But the way Microsoft tell us to implement custom 404 (within Web.Config file), that is not good for SEO. Microsoft says,
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericErrorPage.htm">
<error statusCode="404" redirect="Page-Not-Found.aspx" />
</customErrors>
But when the page is not found, IIS issue 302 redirect to Page-Not-Found.aspx page which is not good. So, I implemented custom 404 page using Routing technique that is available in ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 and 4.0. I used the following router in Global.asax page

I have a problem with my site, and I'm using .net 4, web form routing
I have this route ,routes.MapPageRoute("JobPreview", "jobs/{jobId}/{pg}/{Position}", "~/default.aspx")
so, this page is working fine
http://www.jobsagents.com/jobs/24651/1/automation-qa-engineer
If we remove the last segment of this url, it should be redirected to the custom 404 not found page, but in the deployment server it redirects to the default IIS error page for 404 errors
http://www.jobsagents.com/jobs/24651/1/, on my local machine it's ok, and shows my custom error page.
If we remove the last three segments of the url
http://www.jobsagents.com/jobs it works fine on the deployment server.

Imagine a Web Forms application with routing.
A clean page name like:
[URL]
Might have an underlying of URL of:
[URL]
If a user enters [URL] into a browser, I need to redirect to [URL]
Is this possible to do?
I can't work out a way to do this as the routing engine is not executed for a physical page and in the page.aspx Page_Load method I have no way of knowing whether the URL was entered directly or was the result of a route.

I've been working on this for a while now and nothing has been a bigger pain in asp.net. I'm trying to implement custom profile fields in my visual studio 2008 web application project. I've read a lot of tutorials but they all seem to be either out dated or don't apply to web application projects. Last night I got a little closer to solving the problem when I found the "Web Profile Builder" for web applications. I've successfully set this up and can handle static profile data.I've got my web.config file setup and I can access my custom profile fields by Profile.CustomField. Now I want to figure out how I integrate this with the database and data connection. I know there are two standard ways to handle this, I would like to create new columns in the aspnet_Profile database (rather than the delimited key/value option).I'm pretty new to asp.net and this is my first project with c#, .net, and asp.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the way ASP.NET MVC implements routing.
From what is my current understanding, it seems my route string much have a "{controller}" and "{action}", otherwise it doesn't work?
How would I define the route that using a SearchController and Search action taking both SearchKeywords and SearchCaseSensitive arguments had the following URL?
domain/SearchKeywords/CaseSensitive
Even simpler, how do I map domain to controller SearchController and to Search?

I have spent several hours today reading up on doing Custom Routing in ASP.NET MVC. I can understand how to do any type of custom route if it expands from or is similar/smaller than the Default Route. However, I am trying figure out how to do a route similar to:
/Language/{LanguageID}/Question/{QuestionID}/
And what I would like, too, is similar to how SO works. Something like:
/Language/{LanguageID}/Arabic/Question/{QuestionID}/Some-Question-Title
Where "Arabic" and "Some-Question-Title" can be almost anything because what really matters is the ID's
A complete url example might be
[URL]
Am I going beyond what can be done with the extended URL past the language ID?

We have a shopping cart product. I am trying to implement ASP.Net 4 URL Routing. The problem I have is with image and other resource folders. I can resolve all the links that are defined within the pages and in the code behind. But, some of the links come from html text entered by users.
Using absolute path is not an option. There are some work arounds. But, I want to avoid those work-arounds, because we don't want to burden the users. Is there a way to achieve this through URL Routing?
E.g. The image path derived from the rewritten page: [URL]
Is there a way to achieve this without any patch work?

I've been doing research for a few days now and I know that I want to do ASP Routing over Rewriting. I found this great article:http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/051309-1.aspx and also
http://blogs.msdn.com/mikeormond/archive/2008/05/14/using-asp-net-routing-independent-of-mvc.aspx. I write in VB.NET, these two articles are written in C#. I converted the code, but I must be missing something because my routing doesn't work correctly.
I was able to download the code from 4guys and it works fine. I found some differences between my results and theirs when I stepped through error checking. I added the 3 lines to the web.config file:
<system.web>
<httpModules>
<add name="UrlRoutingModule" type="System.Web.Routing.UrlRoutingModule, System.Web.Routing, Version=3.5.0.0,[code]....
I right clicked on my project and added a reference to the System.Web.Routing dll.I created a Global.asax file in the root directory.
<%@ Application Language="VB" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Web.Routing" %>
<script runat="server"> [code]....
Theirs shows the correct value of whatever you click on The requestContext variable, > HttpContext > System.Web.HttpContextWrapper > Request > System.Web.HttpRequestWrapper > PhysicalPath = "C:UsersNvXDesktopMyWebsiteWebResource.axd"
Theirs shows PhysicalPath = "C:\Users\NvX\Desktop\RoutingDemo\Products\Pavlova" (Pavlova was the link I clicked on)
When I query the database using LINQ, it never finds WebResource.axd and redirects to the NotFound.aspx page. When I load Default.aspx, I want it to load that page. If I type /tjnevis (which is a username in the database), I want it to go to a page where I can put together a profile, pulling the information for that username, which I can figure out. It's the routing that I'm having trouble with. If I could get it to work correctly, I think the PhysicalPath should look similar to the 4guys example I downloaded.

I want to have 4 links in the sidebar of master page which every other form (content page) in my web application inherits.
<table>
<tr>
<td width= "150px">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server">
<asp:Menu runat="server" ID="MainMenu1" CssClass="MasterContent" StaticSubMenuIndent="30px">
<Items>
<asp:MenuItem Text="My Software" NavigateUrl="~/MySoftware.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="Check Out" NavigateUrl="~/CheckOut.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="View Shopping Cart" NavigateUrl="~/ShoppingCart.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="Continue Shopping" NavigateUrl="~/Start.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
</Items>
</asp:Menu>
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</td>
<td width="900px">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder2" runat="server">
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
This is the content in the master page as you can see there are 4 menu items i tried to form as sidebar and i tried to inherit in home.aspx(one of the content pages) as follows:
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Start.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebStore._Start"
MasterPageFile="~/Webstore.Master" %>
<asp:Content ID="StartSideBar" runat="server" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1">
But unfortunately the sidebar is not at all getting displayed. I know i'm doing fundamentally wrong some where. My intention is to have web pages to have sidebar like this. It is a screenshot of my intended page.

I have a requirement to add specific functionality to an asp.net mvc2 web site to provide addtional SEO capability, as follows:
The incoming URL is plain text, perhaps a containing a sentence as follows
"http://somesite.com/welcome-to-our-web-site" or "http://somesite.com/cool things/check-out-this-awesome-video"
In the MVC pipeline, I would like to take this URL, strip off the website name, look up the remaining portion in a database table and call an appropriate controller/view based on the content of the data in the table. All controllers will simply take a single parameter bieng the unique id from the lookup table. A different controller may be used depnding on different urls, but this must be derieved from the database.
If the url cannot be resolved a 404 error needs to be provided, if the url is found but obsolete then a 302 redirect needs to be provided.Where the url is resolved it must be retained in the browser address bar.
I have had a look at the routing model, and custom routing and can't quite work out how to do it using these, as the controller would not be predefined, based on a simple route. I am also unsure of what to do to provide 404, 302 back to the headers also.Perhpas I need a custom httpmodule or similar but going there went beyond my understanding.

Many hosting companies let you define which page will be shown to the user if the user goes to a page that does not exist. If you define some .aspx page then it will execute and be shown.
My question is, why not use this for routing. since I can parse the users URL and then do a server.transfer to the page I want. I checked and there is no redirect sent to the client and the http headers are HTTP/1.1 200 OK.
So, is this a good idea for servers that don't have ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 or if you are not using MVC?

I am working in a school and we recently installed a new server running WinServer 2008R2. I want to be able to point people to a URL on our intranet and have them fill out a simple registration form and have this data written to a database. It would also be nice to have some data auto-populate (such as their name).
Is it overkill to set up a sharepoint server and try to do this with Access Webforms? Could I use something like dotnetnuke and find a module that works? Or how about options for writing custom forms?
