VS 2008 - Converting Between Web Project To A Website

I am not sure if I am using the correct terms. But it is possible to create an asp.net website at least three ways.
1) Where the form and code behind code are in the same file
2) Where the form and code behind code are in separate files, resulting in 2 files for each page (*.aspx, and *.aspx.vb)
3) Where you upon the site up as a project, but insert web pages. This approach results in three files per page (*.aspx, *.aspx.designer.vb, and *.aspx.vb)
My problem is I have a site which is done the third way and I would like to switch it to the second. Is there any automated way to do this, or do I have to do it page by page. What I can do is Open a new site with Create Website, insert a page, and then do some copy and paste.

I've created a new vs.net project and added all the files from an asp.net website project.
When I compile, it couldn't find a reference to a class.
In the AppCode the class was defined, but without a namespace.
So I added a namespace, and then on the default.aspx.cs (this is where the error was originating) I added the using statement.
The using statement was not picking up the namespace.

I got this error in a project I did a while back. I think this was a web site project that i converted to a web app project. This was a while ago. This is an app I'm trying to run on my local machine. I'm not using IIS.
Does anyone know what this means?

It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2005 Express website application. I have tried some of the fixes for this problem but my call stack differs from others. And these fixes did not fix my problem. What steps can I take to troubleshoot this?

And here is the related code. When I debugged this code, "dic" only looped through the 3 column names, but did not look into row values which are stored in "dt", the Data Table.

I have downloaded a project from the internet called the SMS Source example. I wanted to open this project in VS2010, so a conversion wizard has popped up prompting for the conversion. But it has errors in converting.

I'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..

We are migrating a project from classic Asp.Net web forms to Asp.Net MVC. I have followed the fours steps outlined here [URL] and all is working well. Now I want to get Visual Studio to include MVC item templates in the "add new item" dialog. So I add {F85E285D-A4E0-4152-9332-AB1D724D3325}; to the <projecttypeguids> element in the csproj file. So this succeeds in adding MVC support to the Visual Studio "add new item" dialog, but now the build fails. And it fails in the strangest way. The three projects that make up the solution each complete with "build succeeded" but the process ends with a message
Build: 2 succeeded or up-to-date, 1 failed, 0 skipped
I am able to F5 debug, but I am not able to publish. We are using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and migrating to MVC 2.0. Anyone have any ideas why the build is failing after adding this project type guid?

I have two projects in my solution
1- asp.net web project.
2- wcf serivce project.
3- other common projects between two listed above
Current on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files.
Is there a way i can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance and also be able to debug my asp.net web project. ? I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one. Have already considred this option.

I just converted an ASP.NET Web Site Project to a Web Application Project in VS 2010. After I run the application though it seems that my class polymorphism broke. I don't have a clue as to why this could occur.

I recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.
When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.
Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"
Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....
It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.
UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...
Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:

It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?

I have been working on this project for a few months in VS2008.. now that we are getting closer to the end, one of the other programmers has been working and doing his in VS2010, so when i try to open his projects in VS2008 it just shows up as XML.. so i have to open in VS2010.. thats fine..
But if i try to open my project in 2010, it prompts to use the conversion wizard.. Should i be concerned or are there any issues with doing the conversion? Being the end of the project, i dont want to cause issues at this point.. So would like to know if converting the project file at this stage in our project a good idea? Will there be any issues using his code with mine since they were developed in 2 different versions..

I was not able to do unit testing for our existing web site project. I converted the web site project to a web application project. I did some unit testing and changes on the converted web application project. However, my co-worker was doing UI testing on the web site project. We need put UI testing and unit testing to the web application project. Is it possible to move the UI testing code that my co-worker did to the web application project I am working? If so, how do you do it?

I have a project that I developed in VS2005 and that has been put into VSS. I am trying to "get" it on a new machine and convert it to VS2008 because that is what is installed on the new machine. I am having problems with it that I think originate in its working folder. So my basic question is, when you try to work with a solution that's in VSS should you maintain the same folder structure that it had when it was originally checked in? I'm not particularly happy with its original structure because it goes on and on seven levels deep, and I wanted to just cut it down to C:ProjectsResNew, but if that's what it takes to get it to work, I'll do it.

I have a solution with multiple projects in it that I converted to 2010 (kept the 3.5 framework). When it imported/converted the XSD files, the file structure went from:

The designer file is now missing, that had my constructor in it. Obviously, the project won't compile as it says "Type dd1149 is not defined" Why does it not include it with 2010, is there something I'm missing?

I have been doing some research on this topic, and I've come to the conclusion that it's a terrible spot to be in.
Basically, through "business logic," as it was called in another thread, we have a website utilizing both VB and C# throughout. We are running production code with several developers without any kind of source control. All project updating and propagation is done through file system copies, backups and overwrites. I recently stepped into this mess and thought it would be a good idea to implement source control. After installing and setting up Team Foundation Server 2010, I quickly discovered it is impossible to add a website to TFS source control, mainly due to its "projectless" nature. After attempting to create a web project, I now understand the impossibility of creating one assembly from aspx pages compiled from different languages.
My question then becomes, what is the best solution? The vast majority of the code is haphazard (to say the least), so creating two separate projects would be difficult in that there would be a huge amount of reference updating that would need to be done, and the deployment aspect might be nightmarish, though I'm not too sure about that. Consolidating to one language, while everyone seems to agree would be nice, would probably require months of time and thousands of lines of rewritten code. The final alternative seems to be simply putting off adding the project to source control altogether, until a solution for the two-language dilemma can be addressed.
Is it possible to just add the source files to source control? Or would that be more of a hassle? Has anyone ever tried to create one website out of two projects with separate languages? How difficult is that to deploy and maintain? Is our best bet simply to consolidate to one language?
I wish there was a better mechanism for handling multiple languages in a web project. It doesn't seem like a completely outlandish idea (itis supported in web sites), but it seems like it's being treated like it's at the fringe of web application development...

The title says it all. We had a working website built on framework 2.0 with membership. After we converted it to framework 3.5 using the Visual Studio automated conversion mechanism by opening it in Visual Studio 2008 and following the prompts, the membership system is now broken. Dammit, all we wanted was some newer AJAX. The rest of the site appears to be functioning fine, but when it comes to logging in or managing security on the site, it fails.
So the errors we receive when trying to manage security via the built-in admin pages, seem pseudorandom; everything from 'user cannot log in to database' to 'this file is being used by another process' to 'there's a problem with your datastore'.
